These trees are known as a βnelder plot.β The trees were planted by foresters with the University of Berkeley in the 90βs. The aim was to glean insights into resource competition among trees. From the ground level you would never know you are anywhere near these trees. Not only that you will be eaten alive by mosquitoes. I can't say it's not a bit emotional heading back to this place we've camped so often, ever changed by the Caldor fire. This massive fire incinerator over 200,000 acres and destroyed nearly 500 homes in Grizzly flats alone, so heartbreaking. As you make your way into the heart of the El Dorado National Forest, it's surprising to see these little pockets of forest that survived, like an Oasis clinging to the banks of the river. Somehow there was a small miracle, a favorite campground was spared surrounded by the carnage. The beauty here is resilient and breathtaking, but comes with a huge respect for mother nature's rage. #silverforkamericanriver #caldorfire #hikingthesierras #eldoradonationalforest

TL;DR, I got caught out in a beautiful storm again without my snow jacket! βοΈ π It was pretty mild compared to last time. My new, blue, nice, ice lake! Last visit, this lake was mostly frozen over, with the most beautiful blue waters in the center. This visit, the area that was blue liquid water was sealed up with a fresh layer of solid ice! The weather was amazing, so I left my snow jacket behind. We snowshoed to our beautiful granite rock that overlooked the frozen waters, and I teased and tempted the weather gods by exclaiming it couldn't possibly snow again this year. And as we sat on the cold granite, in the warm sun, the weather gods responded and sent in the grey clouds. I know better than to be out in the High Sierras (6500ft... Medium Sierras?) this time of year without waterproof gear, and felt a little foolish as the clouds opened and poured snow on us. And I was humbled once again by our Mother (Earth), the weather gods, and my great hiking colleague who had brought her waterproof snow jacket. I bundled up with what I had, and enjoyed the show. And it was a majestic show! My colleague learned me a new word; graupel. I thought it was just snowing vanilla Dippin' Dots. And was bummed that I forgot my spoon. But she explained that it wasn't vanilla ice cream and that there is a very specific word for our precipitation. And I was learned the science behind the formation of graupel. That concludes my report from 4/7/24 in El Dorado National Forest. I paid worship to our Mother (Earth) π together with a very dear friend of mine so that they could see, with their own eyes, one of the very best snowmelt waterfalls in the backyard where we both grew up. The weatherman lied, and it turned out a much warmer and more stunning day, with less snow than we anticipated. Needless to say, we were rewarded with some of the greatest beauty I have ever seen on this trail thus far. We haven't reached the peak snowmelt of the season, and I can't wait to go back when the waterfall is terrifyingly raging and at the pinnacle of its magical force for the year. π¨ First fatal cougar attack in CA in 20 years near Lake Tahoe Tragedy struck Saturday afternoon west of Lake Tahoe when two brothers searching for shed antlers in El Dorado National Forest encountered a mountain lion. The 18-year-old brother managed to call 911 after the attack, reporting injuries. El Dorado County Sheriffβs deputies unfortunately found the 21-year-old deceased on the ground with a mountain lion crouching nearby. A weekend outing to the Northern California woods took a horrific turn for two brothers when a mountain lion attacked them, killing one and leaving the other with traumatic injuries to the face, authorities said. This was the first fatal attack by a cougar in the state in 20 years, California officials said. The attack unfolded Saturday afternoon while the brothers, ages 21 and 18, were out searching for shed deer antlers near the El Dorado National Forest, about 52 miles northeast of Sacramento, authorities said. Fearful that this will be the last snowstorm of the season, we drove into the morning storm to a new lake to catch the fresh powder before it's too late. It poured giant snowflakes on us all morning, and it transformed into a beautiful sunny afternoon. The powder was so fresh and soft that our snowshoes sunk eight inches into the snow with every step. We snowshoed to a new lake! A BLUE lake! A very nice lake. A mostly-frozen ice lake. I've never been to this one, and I figured what a better time for a first visit with 5 to 6 feet of snow on the ground and over half of the lake a frozen sheet of ice. We followed old snowshoe and XC ski tracks, and we followed wild animal tracks, and we created our own path and tracks along the way. We arrived at the unfrozen section of the water and sat in the sun on the granite boulders, facing the beautiful blue waters and snow-covered mountains for the day. Typical of The Great Luker1886, I selected a trail that I suspected would be lowly trafficked, and when we arrived, we were the only car, and we ended up being the only ones on the shores all day. Tahoe Rim Day 2 (10/14/23) Part 1: The first day (technically night) on the trail was 14 miles of night hiking. We started in Tahoe City and were hiking clock wise. The night hike wasnβt super eventful as we were determined on getting to camp before midnight. The next morning we were greeted with a great sunrise over the lake. We woke up earlier on this trip than previous knowing our daily mileage was going to average around 22. This is one of the most difficult waterfalls to capture a photo of just how majestic it really is, as there just isn't a great angle to capture what is happening. The second photo was taken with the advanced camera/ zoom features of my new hiking phone from a distance of about 400 or 500 feet away... although it might be one of the better photos I've taken of the 100ft + drop-off, I'll have to invest in a DSLR to capture the good-good. Lower Glen Alpine Falls, near Fallen Leaf Lake, near South Lake Tahoe in Eldorado County, California is a picturesque little waterfall on Glen Alpine Creek. It is about as wide as it is tall at 75 feet. It sits a very long couple miles off State Route 89. The road in is βpaved,β so to speak, but rough, narrow, and fairly heavily traveled, requiring lots of pulling over to let other vehicles pass. On this visit I caught it late in the day as the afternoon sun was beginning to fall behind the forest and ridgeline. Several days of heavy rain and snow coming our way. Bring It On! A charred reminder of past years droughts. A few pics in and around a favorite campsite of ours in the Sierras. The Caldor fire forever changed the landscape as it ripped through these beautiful mountains, as did the Dixie fire up in Lassen, 2021. Luckily this campground was somehow spared the major Carnage less than a mile away. You can see where they get the inspiration to create bonsai trees from ancient juniper's, bristlecones and foxtail pines. The weather and environment creates these beautiful shapes over hundreds and thousands of years, seemingly creating one side as if dying while the other is flourishing as the elements push it ever towards one side.
