Day 29 of #the100dayproject Flax 🌿 @dothe100dayproject I experimented with a different way of working to create today's artwork. Thanks to @lizbrindley_artwork for an awesome workshop at The Summer Creative Retreat. 💛 I love the use of bright colours in Liz's work! I used shades of pink and orange for the background- these were done with a mixture of posca pens and pastel stabilo highlighters. Lastly, I added details over the bright background colours using blue and white posca pens @posca_uk I love how the blue and white "pops" 💥 against the pink and orange background. New York State Fish #wip I painted all the fish first and then went back and added the final outlines(last image.) Depending on the fish, I added more layers/color into the watercolor before it had fully dried to capture the fish's scale texture. Flax processing - felting with scraps 2023-2024 As part of the @flaxmobile project last summer I grew flax with my partner on @crows.commons Most of the flax was processed and shared with a local artist who will use the long line fibre for an amazing art project about queer identity and rural craft. I kept the by-product waste of the breaking/scutching/hackling process to sift through, clean, and gently card. I'm experimenting using these short fibres for felting, which has promising results, but took a lot of handwork to salvage the short fibers from the shive. Our friend Randy is a fiddler, fine woodworker, great community builder and a deeply artistic soul. Yesterday he taught Sue how to chisel a sign and she spied this little nest in his workbench. Randy had some processed flax fiber from our 2022 harvest and used it to create this lovely fiber sculpture. Throwback on linen residency, organised by FITE - Textile bienniale and led by Silvija Juozelskyte, for Weave Up! project. . The 1 st day, participants arrived at Première Vision Fair in Paris to meet the Alliance for European Flax-Linen & Hemp team. 2nd day started with a visit at Dehondt Company, which produces flax composites and builds harvesting machines. Then linen team had a look around French Filature, a wet flax spinning mill. 3rd day was about the discovery of linen composites thanks to Ecotechnilin, and then Ronchay weaving factory. Red orchid cactus bloom. Ink on watercolor paper. Second image is what I used to base my drawing on. Not an exotic locale, just in the yard of my humble Alameda four plex. My neighbor Tara, is a wonderful gardener and works magic on our gardens. This is a plant she brought with her and it produces amazing, fragrant blooms that are very short lived. Now I have to decide if I actually want to paint it. Flax! 😍😍 This plant is so cool - so many uses, so much beauty! From its pretty little flowers to it’s tough, indigestible fibers - flax has got it goin’ on 🌾 In its official name, “usitatissimum” means “most useful.” And rightfully so! Let’s look at what this bad boy can do: 🌱a medium for artists’ pigments (thanks to the way flaxseeds, aka linseeds, oxidize upon exposure to air), 🌱 airy linen clothing, 🌱 wrapping mummies in ancient Egypt, 🌱 linoleum for printmaking, 🌱 a nutritious addition to smoothies, 🌱 a vegan egg for baking - like, whoa 🤩 This plant is a rockstar in my book.
