Who says you can't grow ranunculus successful as an outside crop! These babies were pre-sprouted back in February inside and then planted outside in lowtunnel back in late March I think!? Have to check my records!π€·ββοΈπ€·ββοΈ Since then I have fretted and babied them all this time, but the results are well worth it! That's way ranunculus are a premium flower and more $ than a zinnia! Plus I have to buy the corms every year new again, since they are licensed by Italian ranunculus corm growers and the corms are quite expensive! π°π°π°π° But despite of all this I think I am in ranunculus heaven! π§‘π§‘𧑠Look at the first bunch of ranunculus I cut this morning! Aren't they just gorgeous! Then this heat wave happened and ranunculus and anemones are really not liking this kinda weather! On Sunday I put the shade cloth on part of them to keep rhe soil and plants cool! Plenty of watering keppt the soil at the cool side as well! Putting shade cloth on them also helps to improve stems lenght! The cooler temperatures over the next week will agree much better with the ranunculus! So many more colours to bloom that have lots of buds on them! And yes I did order more shade cloth for the rest of them! My supplier should have it in stock again early next week! This morning I potted up the bare roots perennials I received yesterday from #vannoort! These perennials were ordered last fall before we couldn't even imagine what was going to happen to the whole world and the upheaval it would bring to our lives! The anxiety and worry that one of our family members or friends could get infected! Or anyone who has family member or friend who works as a health care worker, essential worker etc. Or elderly parents grandparent's etc!!! The financial impact it has on so many, the implications and of this panademic are staggering and mindboggling! I get a sick stomach just thinking about it! But potting up bare roots and seeding out seeds has a calming and meditative effect on me! So I will continue to prepare for the upcoming season like normal! And I trully belive flowers are still important for us and their beauty can relieve stress and anxiety in us! Not sure how this flowers season will proceed, but I will do my darnest to spread some joy through flowers! So let's talk dahlias for a bit and get real about the cost of growing dahlias! And why they are more expensive then lets say, a stem of Zinnias! I love dahlias and there are just too many gorgeous varieties of them to pass up on them! So initially when I started off, I had to buy all my tubers from other growers or wholesalers that sell tubers! Cost per tubers $2- $6 depending on variety And every year I buy some new tubers in, because if your addicted to them, you just need more varieties every year! ππ And over the winter you always lose some in storage! There is a lot of labour and cost associated with growing them! Over the last couple of weeks whenever I had time, I've been washing and then dividing the dahlia tubers! I will pot up some of the varieties where I didn't end up having enough tubers, this way I can take cuttings once they sprouted to get more dahlia plants! That means putting them under grow lights in my heated seed starting room and paying for electricity! By mid April I will pot up another round of tubers to get a head start on them for earlier bloom times. Meaning I will fork out $$$ for potting soil and plastic pots and then there is always more of that pesky thing called labour! After the last frost, all the tubers get planted outside, very labour intensive and back breaking work. Before I plant I apply organic fertilizer = $$$ Then you have to stake them up with bailer twine so they won't topple over when they get bigger! Watering when needed, dead heading and of course harvesting the dahlias! That's way a stem of dahlia will cost you between $2-$5 depending on variety and size of the blooms!
