And so begins a long day… Laying out the full set of portraits for the Labour of Love exhibition at #dalescountrysidemuseum to start planning where everything might go. This first stage always takes a while, the dance of pairing up pics, and fitting all the other bits that make up the exhibition. Once we get going hopefully it should take shape quite quickly. This is the culmination of 2-year’s work on four upland areas of England - Yorkshire Dales, Lake District, Dartmoor and Shropshire Hills - predominately focusing on the common land. We have met so many inspiring people and learned so much about these special places. Still heartbreaking to see the photos of @poltimore_house on fire early this morning, especially after visiting recently and seeing how enthusiastic and passionate the volunteers were about the conservation work and saving the place after it falling into disrepair following a previous fire in the 1980s. The house has witnessed a lot of history from its Tudor origins to an imposing Georgian country house, a school, and even an NHS hospital for surgery and maternity purposes. Some volunteers who are there have been trying to save the house for 20 plus years, so very devastating for them after the work which they have put into it. Here are a few photos I took in the last few weeks of the exterior and some photos of the house as it was in its heyday. Last week, young participants in the “We Wear Heritage” program visited the Museum of Youth Culture in Vauxhall, South London. They explored diverse youth subcultures and observed fashion and music evolution through decades. Exhibits included books on Grime, Punk, and Hip-Hop, alongside photos from Notting Hill Carnival, raves, and Northern Soul events, illustrating changing styles over time. Discussions highlighted the significance of collecting both professional and personal photographs to capture diverse narratives. The young people examined youth culture artifacts like signed T-shirts, Zines, and technology such as MP3 players, cassette readers, and CD players. The day concluded with reflections on items to contribute to the museum’s archives, with many expressing interest in donating family photos with sentimental value. #CroomePark #PagesfromNature #CapabilityBrown #WilliamDean200th #HortusCroomensis 2024 marks the 200th anniversary of one of the earliest guide books to a ‘destination garden’ including a detailed botanical record of the 4,500 plant species then grown at Croome in Worcestershire - at the time the second greatest plant collection in Britain after #Kew . The guide, written by the illustrious Head Gardener, William Dean, includes a remarkably detailed account of the designed landscape at its zenith as well as explanation of the principles and intended effects of the design. Views, circulation, planting design, ornamental buildings, paths, water and statuary are all addressed, which makes the Dean guide book an invaluable source for the restoration of this highly influential landscape design. As the original project manager (1997-2002) and author of the Restoration Plan, I have to declare a loyal interest in Croome. But at the recent opening of the exhibition ‘Pages from Nature’ at Croome Court celebrating the guide book’s bi-centenary, I was struck by how, 27 years on, the succession of committed and talented people involved with the #HeritageLotteryFund and the #NationalTrust have brought Croome back from almost complete loss to a condition where it might appear never to have been in such peril. From 5,000 visitors when I first opened the garden in 1999, Croome now receives well over 300,000 visitors in a year. The detailed estate map from 1810 is the property of the Croome Estate Trustees and shows the huge extent of the design (700 acres plus). Illustrations from the guide book of Adam’s Temple Greenhouse (1758-60) and Brown’s Gothick church (1759-63) show the fidelity of the restoration. A surviving #MannaAsh ( #FraxinusOrnus) is contrasted with my first shrubbery restoration in 2000. Today, the whole restored design pays tribute to William Dean and his employers, the 6th & 7th Earls of Coventry. The Linnean period botanical Latin is fascinating and often very different from today’s names and classifications. I warmly recommend a visit in 2024, specially on a sunny late afternoon when the westerly sun gives an achingly poignant tone to the prospect east. #

Backwards in time! These drawings are some of the first in the sketch-journaling project Drawing The Work carried out by Deborah Rehmat during the restoration of the park in 2016 and 2017. Back then, Cliffe Castle didn't have any social media accounts, no Instagram, no Facebook (we did have a website) so these drawings and accompanying posts got published on Deborah's own website. It's interesting to look back. The post that went with these drawings said this - "At long last, work on the restoration project to restore and relandscape the grounds at Cliffe Castle is under way. As I’m often prowling around up there with a sketchbook and do love watching what’s going on, I've become a sort of unofficial Works Artist. Not that I can in any way do it justice – but I’m going to try to record as much as I can, and it’s wonderful drawing practice. "Sometimes demolition can be done very quickly, but not when you’re conserving things that are going to be put back together again. I spent some time last week watching the stones in this wall being carefully separated into piles and the dressed stone being neatened and cleaned before being stacked on pallets and taken away. The wall has had to come down to give better access to the site; it’ll be reinstated, eventually, a bit further back. Even though it’s a slow and deliberate process, things can move amazingly fast – I’m constantly surprised by how much has changed from one day to the next." We'll recycle more of these posts over the next few weeks, and remember more about how the park changed and developed into what it is today. Last weekend, the young people on the We Wear Heritage programme visited The Great Syndicate in Ladbroke Grove to record a podcast on the connection between fashion and music. From the ‘60s to today, they explored how style shapes sound. The participants of the programme gained essential skills such as communication and creativity. Their confidence developed as they were given a platform to share their opinions and voices.
