We believe that any child out of school is a child labourer and that every child has the right to education. To ensure this, our residential and non residential training centres and transit schools are enabling families to keep their children in school. This breaks the cycle of poverty, creating a brighter future for generations to come. These numbers are a direct result of Hand in Hand India’s Child Labour Elimination Programme (CLEP) since we began our work two decades ago. #hihindia #handinhandindia #clep #education

Every child deserves the best education and a great medium to absorb it. Numerous studies have indicated that the maximum number of dropouts in school happens after the 2nd and 5th grades. We at HiH India have been working with children and ensuring that they complete their education through our Child Learning Centres (CLCs). It is a supplementary activity that prevents children from dropping out while, at the same time, promoting their interest in learning and education. In Bihar and Jharkhand, we have opened 25 model CLCs, where we have successfully enrolled 615 rural dropout children. The demand is high in the rural, remote regions as every parent wishes their children would receive a good education, complete schooling, and head out into the world with a plethora of knowledge and confidence. Hand in Hand India, under its Child Labour Elimination and Education Programme has 1000+ CLCs under its wing, where close to 25,000+ children are being educated. #HandinHandIndia #HiHIndia #NGO #awareness #NgoIndia #India #RuralIndia #NGOProjects #SocialImpact #Changemakers #education #children #ruraleducation #LearningforEveryone #NoStoptoLearning #dropoutchildren #educatingfuturegenerationofIndia

Despite the numerous benefits of breastfeeding, a large number of infants are still deprived of exclusive breastfeeding. Hence, in order to promote breastfeeding amongst the rural communities, Hand in Hand India organised numerous awareness camps across our project locations to commemorate World Breastfeeding Week 2023. During the week-long programme from August 1st to August 7th, the community members, especially the lactating mothers, were educated about the benefits of breastfeeding and its effect on both the mother and the child through group meetings, posters, and banners. The mothers were even taught the best practises, position of feeding, and other dos and don’ts through the IEC materials. The lactating women were also supported with health counselling sessions to resolve any issues/doubts. Through this initiative, the mothers were given the opportunity to discuss the challenges they face and seek ideas on how to address these challenges in an effective manner. About 700+ women were educated and sensitised through these week-long activities organised across the Nawada, Udaipur, and Chengalpattu districts of Bihar, Rajasthan, and Tamil Nadu States, respectively. #HandinHandIndia #HiHIndia #WomenEmpowerment #NGO #awareness #worldbreastfeedingweek #NgoIndia #India #RuralIndia #NGOProjects #SocialImpact #Changemakers #sensitisationcamps #awarenesscamps

Summer is here and kids are home. Education and knowledge can be fun, if taught in the right way. To engage children productively during the holidays, Hand in Hand Academy for Social Entrepreneurship has initiated "Fun, Innovation & Technology Learning and Life skills (FILL)", a 4-day summer camp for children in the 11-15 age group. The 1st batch camp held at the academy during 9-12 May 2023 taught 50 children. Life skills enlightened them about team building, leadership and ‘out of the box’ thinking, while math & science sessions explained the subjects intuitively. Creative learning involving drama, arts and storytelling enthralled the students, and the practical learning of electronics and Internet of Things (IoT) gave them technological insights. Yoga in the mornings helped the students stay relaxed and focused. Visits to IIT-Madras and Birla Planetarium exposed the students to advanced learning. Creative competitions like drama, skits and paintings capped the wonderful camp, along with prizes and certificates. The 2nd batch will commence on 16 May 2023. But, Hand in Hand India’s entry completely changed this narrative. Inputs on financial & digital literacy, business development and market scoping ensued, enabling the group to have a deeper understanding of businesses. Soon, the machine to produce Khova/cottage cheese/other milk-based products arrived at Tatsam Foods, with major contributions from the women and supported by Hand in Hand India. Hydroponics is a new-wave sophistication in agriculture using technology. This hi-tech soilless cultivation mechanism is driving entrepreneurship among the Hydroponic Farm Group (HFG) members, a self-help group with 5 women members. At Aruvapakkam (Tamil Nadu), Hand in Hand India initiated the Hydroponics unit as a pilot project to cultivate exotic veggies like lettuce, cucumber, kale, red cabbage, capsicum, etc. HFG women operate and maintain the eco-friendly unit, and cultivate using four methods – nutrient feed technique, Dutch bucket, trough/trench and grow bag. The advantage here for the HFG is the continuous harvest irrespective of the season outside. The HFG women also market the produce in nearby Puducherry where the customer demand is high. The group has earned INR 75,000 income from the harvest, with 50% profit margin. Impressed by the functionality of the unit, Hand in Hand India deems the time is ripe to expand hydroponics, to tackle the rising challenges faced by conventional agriculture due to global warming. #hydroponics #soillesscultivation #vegetablecultivation #agriculture #horticulture #technology #polyhouse #selfhelpgroup #shg #villageuplift #exoticveggies #hydroponicfarmgroup #entrepreneurship #womenempowerment #incomegeneration #handinhandindia #hihindia

Boys at the Govt. Higher Secondary School, Lalapettai, located in the Ranipet district of Tamil Nadu, often faced the disconcerting situation-waiting to access the toilet at the school campus during the short break. Insufficient toilet facilities affected their focus during teaching sessions and created unhygienic conditions for the 487 boys enrolled in the school. Hand in Hand India and Plastic Omnium together changed this situation by expanding the toilet facility with 12 urinals and four cubicles, and a separate hand wash unit, thereby averting the potential health hazard that the students were at risk of. A sense of relief was visible among the boys when they took part in the inauguration ceremony held recently. #plasticomnium #health #hygiene #sanitation #toiletfacility #schooolstudents #healthhazard #improvedsanitation #school #education #handinhandindia #hihindia #swachhbharatmission #sbm #personalhygiene #handwash

A landmark spot in the city of Mumbai, where people throng to have fun time with families and friends, often is subjected to the ugly sight of waste – the famous Juhu beach. Early morning walkers and joggers witness it the most, but neglect it. But Hand in Hand India and Intertek, a global Quality Certification company, thought otherwise. Firmly believing in 'be the change', an Employee Engagement Programme – Beach Cleaning, was organized involving 35 Intertek employees, and Hand in Hand India and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials, to clean the Juhu beach. The bunch of enthusiasts collected wet and plastic wastes, 500 kg approx., along a 100-metre stretch. The collected waste was handed over to BMC, along with two 120-liter capacity dustbins to be placed in the beach, hoping to encourage the visitors to drop wastes in the bins. The programme displayed a sense of collective responsibility among the beach-goers, which is the ultimate aim of the event, to create awareness on environmental conservation and active community participation. #beachcleaning #environmentalconservation #juhubeach #intertek #BMC #plasticwaste #cleancoastline #marinepollution #pristinebeach #wastemanagement #marineecosystem #employeeengagement #collectiveresponsibility #wastebins #teamwork #ecofriendly #handinhandindia #hihindia #solidwastemanagement #awarenesscreation #sensitisation #communityparticipation

Festive season brings in a festive mood. Children are a happy lot when taken on a fun trip. Students of our Poongavanam RSTC went out on a fun trip to Kailasanathar temple, one of the oldest surviving historic monuments in Kancheepuram exuding the Pallava architecture built around 700 CE. The visit to Arignar Anna’s (former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu) memorial house gave the kids insights about his contribution to the state’s development. Exposure to a local bank and the post office taught them the basic functions of banking and postal services, govt. schemes, and the idea of savings. The inquisitive lot of 20 had fun to the fullest making their first trip post pandemic a memorable one. Our unique Residential Special Training Centre (RSTC) model caters mainly to children rescued from bonded labour, school dropouts, migrants’ children and first generation learners to speed up education, in collaboration with Samagra Shiksha, a government-run programme. #clep #PoongavanamRSTC #RSTC #kancheepuram #kanchi #school #residentialschool #historic #monument #schoolstudents #children #festive #festivity #excursion #funtrip #fieldtrip #postoffice #govtschemes #savings #handinhandindia #hihindia #childeducation #education #SSA #SarvaShikshaAbhiyan #educationforall #samagrashiksha

Watershed management interventions is one of the major environmental conservation initiatives of Hand in Hand India. Construction of check dams is a major activity to aid water storage in rural areas that face water shortage due to poor or defunct storage infrastructure. These check dams often are assisted with clearing weeds, deepening and desilting work, and feeder channels formation. One such intervention is the masonry check dam constructed at Ammanampakkam village in Tamil Nadu under the Creating Harmonious Village project supported by BNP Paribas. This check dam with 5000 cu m capacity has turned into a lifesaver for the 350 families in the village that depend on agriculture for livelihoods. Our Natural Resource Management (NRM) team has successfully constructed 51 check dams in Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh with a total storage capacity of about 255, 000 cu m, and are set to support many such villages suffering from poor water management. #watershedmanagement #checkdam #masonrycheckdam #environmentalconservation #waterstorage #watermanagement #waterconservation #watershed #desilting #feederchannels #agriculture #livelihoods #farmers #cropcultivation #handinhandindia #hihindia #bnpparibas #environment

Littering is a major concern along the coastline as it pollutes the ocean and also harms marine life. Plastic waste in particular being dumped in the sea results in loss of biodiversity and even leads to the death of marine animals. Hand in Hand India through its Waves of Change project has been conducting various programs and awareness campaigns to impart knowledge to the fishermen community about the dangers of plastic waste and marine littering. As part of ongoing Awareness Campaign, ten fishermen's boats were painted with slogans emphasizing the importance of Marine Life Preservation and the Creation of a Plastic Free Ocean. The fishermen were also provided with net bags to collect plastic waste while they fish in the deep sea. Through this painting activity, we not only imparted awareness among the fishermen community but also to the common public. #Plasticwastemanagement #ClimateChange #SolidWasteManagement #HandinHandIndia #HiHIndia #Plasticwaste #marinelife #fishermancommunity #waterpollution #Pollutant #preservation #biodiversity

Women are often the powerhouse of the society. Yet, they are frequently faced with discrimination in terms of pay, land & livestock ownership, enterprise development, financial & credit support as well as market linkages. Women create life, hold families, sustain livelihoods and lead communities with strength and resilience. But when it comes down to their support women are often left to fend for themselves. To change this very behaviour and thought, HiH India through its SHG model has been working with rural women to bridge a gap that they have succumbed to. The women are empowered through financial & digital literacy, business development coaching, and enterprise formation. The aim is to eventually lead the women towards unique jobs that would not only generate income and sustain livelihoods but also establish independence. Achieving gender equality and empowering women is not only a right but is also a crucial ingredient to fighting poverty, hunger, and malnutrition. #womenempowerment #women #powerhouse #breakthenorms #empower #creatingenterprises #womenleadbusiness #HandinHandIndia #sustainability #HiHIndia #empoweringwomen #SelfHelpGroup #SHG

The children at Ovale Panchayat’s Primary School (Maharashtra ) have their very own green and educational hobby of growing a kitchen garden. The garden has been cared for, watered, fertilised, and planted by the little folks. The school saw this as an educational opportunity and embraced this activity promoted and supported by our CSR partner. These kids are not only learning nurturing values and garnering knowledge about the plants but also are consuming the veggies their harvest themselves. The veggies from the garden are included in the mid-day meals at school. This provides the children with a regular full-course nutritious meal. The veggie grown on the grounds also saves the school a lot of expenses. This sustainable intervention saves the school INR 2000 to INR 2200 every month. #GreenMission #learning #HiHIndia #HandinHandIndia #India #VIllageUplift #Naturallearning #sustainable #eduactional #nutrition #development #costsaving

The floods in Kerala disrupted and displaced the livelihoods of numerous communities and families. To support the families to bounce back on their feet, HiH India in partnership with Belstar Microfinance Ltd under their flood relief CSR project supported underprivileged and tribal families of 10 villages in Palakkad District. The health team distributed 750 food rations to the families thus helping them survive through the horrid floods and get back to normal in due course of time. #HandinHandIndia #HiHIndia #India #Floodsupport #Floodrelief #keralafloods #Supportingcommunities #Healthcare #reliefmeasures #health #foodrations #Supportinglivelihoods

We at HiH India have trained over 2450 women under our 'Adult Literacy Programme' in Rajasthan and while all the candidates have cleared the internal exams, 53 have cleared their 10th and 12th class board exams. In the hamlet of Satlana, 150 women have been educated through this programme, and this year 16 women have cleared their 10th and 12th exams with flying colours. These are women who are 40+ of age and were unable to even read or write as they had discontinued their education. The female literacy rate in this village is at 50% while the male literacy rate is at 79.4% and we are determined to bridge that gap. This programme has transformed the lives of women as it has positively impacted gender parity in education and women's participation in household domains, community development, market linkages for enterprise promotion, and Panchayat-level politics. The increase in the women's bargaining power in their communities is tangible due to their increased level of literacy. #HandinHandIndia #HiHIndia #India #Literacy #empoweringwomen #womenliteracyprogramme #AdultLiteracy #educatingtheruralcommunities #Empoweringruralwomen #Relentless&Passionate

In a joint initiative, the Hand in Hand India Academy for Social Entrepreneurship and the Self Help Group (SHG) pillar addressed the need for micro-enterprises in the LED bulbs and tube lights assembly and servicing industry. This initiative intends to develop 100 such micro-entrepreneurs thus promoting job creation and fulfilling the entrepreneurial dreams of many. The project is also a venture to promote energy-efficient products amongst the community and guide them to go the green way. 20 participants from rural Kanchipuram mobilized by the SHG pillar attended the program. It was a two-day program with the 1st day covering technical aspects and the 2nd day covering the entrepreneurial training module. This joint initiative aside from creating jobs and promoting entrepreneurial ventures is also empowering rural women. #enterprises #training #empowerwomen #HandinHandIndia #HiHIndia #SHGwomen #buildingenterprises #womenledenterprises #microenterprises #trainingruralIndia #greenway

The rag pickers have a rather crucial role in collecting waste while ensuring the community is clean and hygienic. Yet, they are often ill-maintained and the vehicles are in poor working conditions. The repair of these vehicles would cost them somewhere between INR 7k to 10k, spending this amount was unimaginable for the rag pickers. Hence under the Waves of Change project of HiH India, SWM team supported 10 rag pickers with a partial amount to repair their waste collection vehicles along with uniforms and caps which entirely changed their appearance and gave them a dignified look. This initiative will not only upscale their livelihood but also strengthen their enterprises. They will no longer be rag pickers, but messengers spreading the message of having a clean and green plastic-free environment. #TrackletheTrash #Trash #SoildWasteManagement #Segregation #WasteManagement #wastesegregation #plasticfree #notosingleuseplastic #EndtoPlastic #GreenFriends #HandinHandIndia #HiHIndia #India
