This morning when I woke up momma told me we had to drive to a new state, but first she had an adventure planned in Oklahoma that she thought I'd really like - Hiking! Momma and I climbed up and over rocks and to the tippy top! What a view! Then we made a big loop through the forest. I was having a great time, but I was a little warm. There was a pond and I gave momma my best puppy eyes, but she said no swimming - the pond was not good for dog swimming. Ok momma, I get it... I zoomed and zoomed and then do you know what I saw?! A creek! And momma said it was clean and I could splash! Yippee!!!! I splashed and splashed and smiled and smiled and then I shook water on momma to cool her off and say thanks for my creek time! When we got back to the car momma said we spent four whole hours hiking and playing - we were sad to leave Oklahoma, but on to my next adventure - Texas! Momma says everything is bigger in Texas.... The setting of Where the Red Fern Grows; where the Sparrowhawk mountain looks out over the Illinois River in the Ozarks of Oklahoma. This is one of my favorite books, and it was really something to be able to hike this mountain with my own two hounds. No less, it's the furthest West any of us have ever been. If you'd like to visit this place with your own hounds, know that you need a hunting license or wildlife viewing permit to access the area. ✨Jed Johnson Tower Trail✨ A quick search on the internet of Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge will likely bring up a photo of this iconic castle-looking tower. This is the Jed Johnson Tower that over looks Jed Johnson Lake. Who is Jed Johnson and why are so many things named after him? He was a Democrat on the Oklahoma senate beginning in 1920. He advocated for public lands, supported Franklin D. Roosevelt and the New Deal, and he sponsored a bill that established the Civilian Conservation Corps for veterans. The tower was built in the 1940s by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Its original purpose was to be used as a fire tower to spot forest fires. I believe Jed’s advocacy for public lands and the CCC is why the tower and lake are named after him. Although, the observation tower is closed to the public, you can still hike up to it. The trail is fairly easy with little elevation gain. It is about 1 mile out-and-back with dirt and rock surfaces. It begins at Jed Johnson Lake Parking Area. Parking is limited here so you might find it full and have to come back later. The first half of the trail follows the shoreline of the lake, and yes you can access the water from here. Fishing is allowed with an Oklahoma state fishing license. To get to the tower there is a little bit of an incline up a rocky path. ✨Little Baldy Trail✨ For those of you who hike for the epic views, you would love this trail. It is my favorite place to watch a sunset in the Wichita Mountains and see for miles across the refuge. The trailhead is located at Quanah Parker Dam or you can access it from the campground if you are staying there. I have done both and found the dam route to be shorter. It is still a moderate hike about a mile long and requires some rock scrambling and route navigating as there are no trail markers. If you are an early riser this is a great spot to catch the sunrise also. The 360 degree views of the mountains from the top look amazing with cotton candy colored skies in the background. Just make sure you don’t get off route and step into a bunch of cactus in the dark or accidentally come face to face with a bison 🦬. They do roam free here. The trail is rocky and there are giant boulders you have to climb on in a few places. Make sure you wear proper footwear. When hiking up to the top, you will circle the whole mountain and go up on the backside. When you find the stairs carved into a giant rock you’ll know you are on the right path. There are several game trails here so pay attention. At the top make sure to look for the balanced rock and the little natural arch! At the beginning of the trail you have to walk across Quanah Parker Dam. Does this dam look familiar? It was constructed by the CCC in the 1930s and it was designed to replicate the Hoover Dam in Nevada - on a much smaller scale, of course. Sometimes there is water flowing through the dam creating the waterfall. I would recommend going after a big rain if you want to see the waterfall. Which view here is your favorite?
