The is Om Mudra 🕉️ ⬆️ Did you know the mantra Om is often paired with Chin Mudra (first image, palms facing up) or Jnana Mudra (second image, palms facing down). Om is the sonic representation of absolute, and this hand mudra is the visual representation of Om. Om mudra unlocked ⬇️ To practice this mudra, one brings the thumb pad closer to the index finger pad. The other fingers are kept extended, yet relaxed. One practices this gesture for/during meditation - - with palms facing down (Jnana Mudra) When the sankalpa is to take the path of involution (microcosmic dissolution)/ nivrtti/ yoga to samadhi - with palms facing up (Chin Mudra) When the sankalpa is to take the path of evolution (macrocosmic expansion)/ pravrtti/ bhoga to samadhi. Let us decode the symbology: - The point of contact between thumb and index finger in the mudra is the dot (bindu) above the crescent in 🕉️ symbol, which represents the absolute state of Yoga. - The bottom arch below the point of contact in the mudra represents the crescent, the field of illusions/maya that keeps us away from this absolute state. - The three fingers extended represent that in such a state of Yoga, one is beyond the divisions, attachment and aversions of the three states: Awake, Dream, Deep Sleep The little finger in the Om mudra represents awake state, which is the lower curve in the symbol 🕉️ The ring finger represents dream state, which is the middle curve/tail in between the upper and lower curves of the symbol 🕉️ The middle finger resents the deep sleep state, which is the upper curve of the symbol 🕉️ This unity with discernment, awareness and sankalpa is the real Yoga. The practice of Om Mudra in meditation inspires the meditator to wake up to true meaning of Yoga. However, in our modern context, there's a growing tendency to blur the lines between the historical evolution of yoga and its timeless spiritual teachings. Viparita Karani is a mudra, generally practiced after asanas to seal the prana and uplift the soma versus legs up the wall is generally practiced as a body position to ease the discomfort in legs. Today is Hanuman Jayanti! . Hanuman Janmotsva or Hanuman Jayanti is a day to celebrate the strength, devotion, courage, dedication, child-like curiosity and impeccable integrity that Hanuman embodies and stands for. His unconditional love, dedication and discipleship for Rama changed the course of Rama’s life. It is an example when love is devotional, courageous, trusting and complete in itself. It does not wait for validation and honorary mentions. It just is. Symbology: Lord Rama represents our soul/atman and Hanuman is the breath/life force/prana that connects us back to our soul/atman/consciousness. Although Hanuman is portrayed in many forms, like Veera Hanuman- the courageous one, Bala Hanuman- the naughty/curious one, Vayu Putra Hanuman- the fierce, animating, fast one, the son of wind, Mahabali Hanuman- the strongest one… for me it is his form as devotion, the Dhyani Hanuman that touches my heart and inspires me deeply. . To do: Observe your breath for it is the incessant stream that leads to the ocean of consciousness. 🎶 >> Make your breath subtle through chanting/listening to Hanuman Chalisa- 40 verses of bliss. 📕 If you get your hand, read the most powerful narration about Hanuman from my friend’s book @livinghanuman by Pawan Kumar Mishra . Do the japa of this Mantra tonight inviting the qualities of devotion, dedication, courage and shraddha: Om Hanu Hanumate Namaha . 📸: The silver idol of Panchamukhi Hanuman seen in the photo above was gifted to me by my mother @shakuntala.arora_ a few years back. Today being the perfect day for infusing it with prana (devotion, prayer and adoration) once again. My dear mother, you infused this body with prana, may my breath always do your japa/unbroken remembrance. PS: Panchamukhi Hanuman refers to the five faced Hanuman. Each head faces a cardinal direction. East facing Sri Hanuman embodying purity, integrity and benevolence. South facing form is Narsimha to conquer all fears with utmost courage. West facing is Garuda to dispel all evils. Varaha on the north side to enjoy all 8 types of prosperity and Hayagriva facing upwards symbolic of wisdom, insight skill.

There's a prevalent need of giving oneself the title of ‘yogi"’or ‘yogini’ based on number of years of practice, teaching skills, a yoga scholar or a flat out “I can.” While dedication to yoga is commendable, true yogis and yoginis aren't self-proclaimed; the desire/need to claim the title of yogi and yogini stems from ignorance. Tendency to justify self-appointed titles by citing years of practice, teaching skills, knowledge to practicing the 8 limbs and even by embracing the notion that “I can name myself anything I want." is nothing more than an act of defiance, reflects cultural appropriation. Look, most of us are householders (grihastas) living in this world, navigating daily lives while striving to integrate yogic principles/values into our actions and interactions. We are students (sadhakas) on the path of yoga, continuously learning and evolving. While our dedication is admirable, it doesn't grant us the title of yogi or yogini. A yogi/ yogini is recognized for their mature embodiment of yoga beyond the physical realm. They come from lineages, have attained spiritual mastery, are immersed fully into the practice and have dedicated their whole lives to a deeper and maturer practice. They posses siddhis, spiritual powers, through their unwavering commitment. Step back and reflect on the significance of these titles. Continuously justifying your reason for using them diminishes the sacredness of yoga and disregards the wisdom passed down through generations. Such a title is bestowed upon not a self proclaimed badge! 3 Rules for Mudras Practice ⬇️ ❤️ Rule # 1 PREPARE Prepare the hands for practice by oil application, massage with marma stick and joint freeing exercises for fingers, knuckles and wrist. This is really helpful if you tend to feel stiffness, dulness and achy-ness in your hands, wrist and fingers. It is excellent for vata-kapha pacification . ❤️ ❤️ Rule # 2 DISCIPLINE Practice the chosen hand Mudra three times a day, holding it for minimum 2 minutes. ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ Rule # 3 SAFETY Observe the changes in your body, breath and mind during the Mudra practice. For example, If you experience any dizziness, nausea, excess heat, headaches, heartburn or overall unpleasantness, release the Mudra and choose a different one. These are signs of dosha vitiation. When pieces of a puzzle are missing, the picture remains incomplete, and the tapestry of understanding remains fragmented. This is what is happening within yoga spaces today. While tough conversations surrounding yoga and its role in caste, religion and its politicization and the not so tough the general conversations like namaste, clothing, cherry picking teachings etc are gaining traction; there is one vital piece of the jigsaw that is missing. Am currently taking an eight-week course on 1000 years of Hindu Colonial Trauma and it’s been an eye opener and at times very difficult to listen; especially concerning the harm my ancestors endured. This critical piece of history is rarely talked about. It is swept under rug, no one wants to go there.. you have to wonder why! Many shy away from using terms like "Hindu" or even acknowledging yoga's roots within India. The tendency to dismiss or label Indian teachers who embrace Hinduism as "Hindutva" is deeply troubling. Such oversimplified political lenses distort the culture of yoga as a whole and reflects poor understanding of those that are quick to label and judge. It is perplexing to witness the haste with which many seek to erase the origins of yoga and impose a western perspective narrative. This eagerness to strip away the Hindu identity of yoga reflects a broader trend of cultural appropriation and colonization, wherein the voices and experiences of marginalized communities are silenced and appropriated for profit or convenience. May your light be unshakable 🔥 …in moments of doubt, grief and loss. The Achala Agni Mudra - the hand gesture of unshakable fire/strength/luminosity. Hand gestures communicate our state of mind. They are not random movements. Infact, when we study them in detail we may become more mindful of our own psyche, emotional state and subconscious. Also, when practiced with awareness of what, when and why they have the power to create shift in energy levels, digestion, sleep otherwise understood as levels of prana, tejas and ojas. Practice Achala- Agni Mudra whenever you feel shaky, stirred, disturbed or you wish to stay unshakable, determined and resolute. Life is not just about happiness, fun, accomplishments, festivities, family gatherings for everyone. For some simply everyday mundane moments can trigger grief, loss of loved one and perhaps a sense of lack. Let us be mindful that happiness is not the only emotion that exists around this time. True wisdom cannot be packaged into a few sessions, workshops or lectures. It demands patience, introspection, and a willingness to immerse oneself fully in its teachings. To truly grasp the essence of the Gita, one must go beyond mere consumption of its verses. It requires questioning, pondering, and allowing the teachings to permeate one's consciousness and this takes time. Through deep contemplation, the theoretical knowledge transforms into practical wisdom, firmly rooted in one's being. When we treat the learning of the Gita as a product to be consumed rather than a path to be walked, we risk diluting the richness of the Gita's essence . The rush to teach the Gita within yogaland is another way of perpetuating a cycle of shallow understanding and superficial application. The essence of the Bhagavad Gita lies not in rote recitation or superficial comprehension, but in the lived experience of its timeless wisdom.
