I don’t believe in coincidences. I believe that every single moment in life is divinely orchestrated. So when the playlist at 5th and Taylor during dinner last week brought on a flood of memories from my 20th year of life, I believe it was for a reason. Band of Horses, Coconut Records, The Postal Service, Rilo Kiley, Death Cab for Cutie. The soundtrack to 19-21. But especially 20. It’s a year I don’t reflect upon often. It was a brutal year of growing up. Living away from home for the first time in Seattle, my first real boyfriend, my first real breakup, the helpless feeling of being broke AF, loneliness and confusion in a basement apartment in the UDub district with 3 utterly bizarre roommates. I found comfort in music and art, as usual…somehow coming up with the money to see Shelby Lynne and The French Kicks, catch one ballet, and meander around the art museum once. I looked forward to getting a new issue of paste every month, which always promised a CD with new music. But it’s always Ben Gibbard and Jenny Lewis that seem to sing in my memories of that year. I specifically remember dissociating to the four minute intro to “I Will Possess Your Heart” sitting in my Volvo in a mall parking lot in a Seattle suburb wondering what the hell I was doing there. I don’t like thinking about 20. BUT I’ve thought a lot about it since last Thursday, and it occurred to me that it was in that year that I made the most defining decisions of my life. Everything that happened afterward happened because of decisions I made to Death Cab for Cutie, depressed, in Seattle. The most important being the decision to convert to Catholicism. So it was with these thoughts in mind that I purchased last minute tickets to Death Cab and The Postal Service last night. And I can’t believe I almost missed it. As I listened to Ben Gibbard sing “I need you so much closer” for a solid minute with tears streaming down my face, I had a new and profound gratitude for my 20th year. You did good, kid. Big Girls Don't Cry... They Get Even! (1991) dir. Joan Micklin Silver A girl living with her quirky and dysfunction blended family runs away from home, subsequently forcing them to come together to find her. Allen and I were watching something on Amazon when I stumbled onto this movie. The title sounded like it could be a bad movie and the plot didn't sound half bad, so I put on the trailer. I was instantly hooked and wanted to know more, so with Allen sharing the same sentiment, we decided to give this movie a rent and checked it out! This was a very enjoyable movie full of faces that you'll recognize from other movies - our lead is Kevin's older sister from Home Alone. She does a fantastic job narrating the entire movie. I'm honestly very surprised that her career didn't go anywhere after this movie, because she made this movie very endearing. I'm a fan of dysfunctional family movies and this one does a good job at it. If I had any sort of criticism it would be that the camera work isn't always consistent. Every now and then it would transition to what I can only describe as a sitcom shot. It looked so much like Full House sometimes that I thought it might be intentional. There's enough references to the Brady Bunch to make you think of other shows like it including Full House or All in the Family. But then the movie would go back to having movie quality cinematic shots which gave me a bit of whiplash in terms of viewership. Somehow, Charleston was blessed with this Death Cab For Cutie and Postal Service tour. I’ve spoken about it before, but the past two or three years have been SO BLESSED regarding the tours that have come through here. I have seen both of these bands before (DCFC at this same venue in 2016, Postal Service at Barclay Center in 2013) but there was something special about both of these being 20+ year celebrations of their landmark albums (Transatlantacism and Give Up). Gibbard has always been a bit of a Sad Guy in my mind, but his energy was bubbling the entire night, stopping to express lament only in a few of the more downtrodden Death Cab songs. The guy still has it and the performances of both of these records, in full, back to back was endlessly memorable. Jenny Lewis continues to prove that she is JUST. TOO. COOL. It was a night of deep emotional expression, and also a great deal of joy. An absolutely incredible night. Got the two for one special Wednesday night when both Death Cab For Cutie and The Postal Service performed the albums “Transatlanticism” and “Give Up” in their entirety to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of each. While “Transatlanticism” is my favorite offering from Death Cab thus far, “Give Up” by The Postal Service is my favorite album overall and it was an absolute dream to be in attendance for this show, as prior to this tour I had never expected the supergroup of Ben Gibbard, Jimmy Tamborello, and Jenny Lewis to reunite and perform it live again.
