The Turning Point pick-ups! The Anvil documentary is great. Wish I had picked it up sooner. Looks to be going for okay to good money now, so glad I found this UK edition. Comes with the CD as well, and I love that slip. Common Threads is about the first decade of the AIDS epidemic in the US. I first watched this on Kanopy and absolutely loved it. So glad to have found this on DVD so I can add this excellent documentary to my collection. Highly recommended if you haven't seen it. I've never seen Fear Of A Black Hat, but it's one I've always wanted to. Just never seen it around. I was going to pass on it given the price, but I looked it up, and the price is about right. So, I decided to grab it because I knew if I didn't, it probably wouldn't last long. Decent amount of extras on it, too. The Henry set is a Dutch release. It's got both films, but when I looked it up, I mistook it for the Norwegian release. They also have an edition like this one. The deleted scenes, which are on the Norwegian edition, aren't on this one. And it's like 28 minutes' worth. Sadly, I think this might also be the R-rated version instead of the unrated. Guess I'll find out when I watch it. I grabbed it because I didn't think it had been released here, but Dark Sky released it uncut, and with the deleted scenes. The understated performances by Michael Rooker and Tracy Arnold add to a feeling of naturalism; you believe everything that’s happening on screen. But make no mistake about it: this is one very terrifying movie. Director John McNaughton ingeniously shows how killers operate in a stealth manner, quietly choosing victims, following them home and … Few scenes are as grim to endure as when killer Henry and his buddy Otis watch a home video they made of the family they raped and slaughtered. We never see what’s on the video, but we hear the audio … and it’s horrifying. Powerful film, but tough to see more than once. Couple more additions to the collection came this week from Arrow Video’s Shocktober sale. I didn’t intend to double up on Kevin Bacon but I’ve wanted to own both of these films for quite a while. TREMORS is such an underrated monster movie that gleefully pays homage to 1950s creature features, and I’m really looking forward to exploring more of that franchise when I revisit Ron Underwood’s gem. WILD THINGS didn’t blow me away when I first saw it but I do admire the style of the piece. It’s a glossy and steamy mystery thriller that’s packed full of narrative twists, and it has a such an entertaining trashy appeal. More than anything else though, I’m just happy to finally own a Limited Edition set from Arrow. #henryportraitofaserialkiller1986 Produced, Co-written & Directed by #johnmcNaughton #henryportraitofaserialkiller is a low budget, well made but controversial #serialkillermovie / #horrorfilm with a significant #cultfollowing. This is the 1st & best film by auteur McNaughton (Wild Things, 98, The Harvest, 13) 'HPOASK' is loosely based on the story real life, poor, white trash serial killers, Henry Lee Lucas: ( #michaelrooker) beyond the real murder of his mother, the film draws more on his false confessions of 300 murderers as opposed to the 3 for which he was convicted & further killing he's suspected of, his partner in crime, Ottis Toole, ( #tomtowles) who was convicted of 6 murders & victim/ Ottis's younger sister, Becky ( #tracyarnold) who in the interests of good taste is an adult in the film though in real life she was only 12, when she began her affair with Henry. The film follows, observing as the pair of psychopaths go on a random killing spree, targeting mostly women but men too. The acting is uniforming 1st rate. Rooker is especially good, delivering a chilling low key performance as the infamous titular murderer. Filmed with statically framed shots by cinematographer #charlielieberman & has a quasi documentary feel about it. There's a pretty good score with 3 composers credited. Of the 16 killings featured in the film, only a few are shown in progress. Whilst in places, there's scenes of strong violence, decapitation &:such like, but the film is disturbing not so much for it's violence as the claustrophobic atmosphere it creates the snap shot it gives into psychology of it's demented protagonists, as they kill & kill again, unimpeded by either the police or any semblance of conscience. This film was highly controversial. After sitting on some years on studio shelves 'HPOASK' was a commercial success, making back $609,939 on a budget of $110,000. When finally released in 90, though it would eventually be released U/C, it was initially unrated in the US & cut in places like the UK, New Zealand & Australia. Even the original poster artwork by #joecoleman featured in the 1st attached photo was withdrawn for being too disturbing. Highly recommended.

Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer is a mid 80s, semi-biographical film that loosely follows a period in the life of real life serial killers Henry Lee Lucas and Ottis Toole. Henry is an incredibly divisive film, but one that I personally enjoyed. The film touches on some incredibly sensitive topics, and I do think at times it crosses the line, but it is easily made up for by stellar performances from a debuting Michael Rooker, and his co-stars Tom Towles and Tracy Arnold. One of the most interesting facts I came across when researching the film for this poster is that, while it is technically unrated, it was one of the catalyst films for the creation of the MPA NC-17 rating. Henry pioggia di sangue ● Ancora una volta oggi vediamo un thriller/horror relativo alla figura di un serial killer, realmente esistito, e sto parlando di “Henry, pioggia di sangue” (Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer) del 1986, diretto da John McNaughton ● La pellicola è liberamente ispirata alla vita del serial killer Henry Lee Lucas. ● Si tratta di un film a basso costo (venne infatti girato in meno di un mese con un budget di circa 110.000 dollari. Si tratta del secondo film ispirato al serial killer dopo Confessions of a Serial Killer del 1985, diretto da Mark Blair. Anziché narrare i fatti secondo un punto di vista oggettivo, Henry, pioggia di sangue mostra delle vicende ispirate ad alcune delle confessioni del killer. ● Non fu un campione d'incassi, ma, grazie alle sue atmosfere oscure e tenebrose, è diventato un classico tra i fan dei film horror. in particolare del sottogenere slasher, e può ormai essere considerato un cult. ● Nel 1996 venne realizzato il sequel Henry II: Portrait of a Serial Killer, diretto da Chuck Parello e con Neil Giuntoli al posto di Michael Rooker nel ruolo di Henry. Nonostante abbia avuto alcune critiche positive, il sequel non ha raggiunto la popolarità del precedente. ● Trama: Henry è all'apparenza una persona normale, ma ha l'abitudine di uccidere persone per divertimento, di notte, insieme al suo compagno di stanza Otis. Un giorno, la sorella di Otis va a trovare i due. ● Si tratta di un film horror dalle forti tinte thriller e biografiche, naturalmente con incursioni drammatiche, un film che racconta una storia vera rielaborando un po’ di cose, arrivando comunque a raccontare una parte di verità. ● Fra le cose che preferisco ci sono interpretazioni, scenografie, effetti speciali e ambientazione. ● Ennesimo film sui serial killer, è vero, eppure ha lasciato il segno, e si può dire che riguarda, anzi, appartenga ad una categoria di cinema particolare, ovvero quella del cinema degli eccessi. ● Promosso e consigliato. Voto: 7,5/10.
