Lucy Hull, a children's librarian, develops caring guardian-like tendencies towards a 10-year old frequent library patron named Ian Drake, a bookish child with autistic tendencies and strict evangelical parents. But who kidnaps who? There is family heritage, humor, adventure, tension, religion, and introspection. ⭐️ "My father's favorite joke: What is one Russian? A nihilist. What are two Russians? A game of chess. What are three Russians? A revolution. But what do you call a would-be revolutionary stuck at a desk? Antsy, maybe. Trouble. . . 🔙THROWBACK THURSDAY🔙 📗📘The Borrower📕📙 By Rebecca Makkai This is the year that my mild obsession with Rebecca Makkai was born. I read and loved 2018’s The Great Believers; then 2023’s I Have Some Questions For You when it came along, to very mixed reviews. I decided I needed to reread it this year, and confirmed my love for it. So naturally it was time to seek out Makkai’s backlist, which led me to this whimsical debut of hers. In The Borrower (not to be confused with The Borrowers, a middle grade book about tiny people who take things from humans, of which I am also a fan), children’s librarian Lucy believes she has sound reasons for helping her favorite young patron smuggle books past his censoring, fundamentalist Christian mother--after all, she has enrolled him in anti-gay classes and doesn’t seem to be accepting him for who he is. This leads the two book lovers down an unlikely, madcap, adventure-filled path that is entertaining but not all sweetness and light, with many a lesson to be learned. Turns out The Borrower is a divisive book, too. Checking out Goodreads reviews, I learned that many readers couldn’t withhold their judgment of Lucy for a choice she made, so therefore said readers had little good to say about the book. I myself love a messy, flawed protagonist, especially one that makes poor choices in the moment, and even more especially when those choices amount to what is a quirky love story—a love story with a moral of Be True to Yourself. I also love a cover that features books! Ultimately The Borrowers is a road trip, a coming of age tale, and a love letter to reading rolled into one. So many favorite books were mentioned along the way, any reader’s delight. It made me laugh, think, and cry, my favorite things to do when I read. It’s radically different than the two others I've read by Makkai and cemented my admiration for her versatile writing chops. Is there a writer you’re obsessed with these days?

Bücher können Leben retten, da glaube ich nicht nur fest daran, ich weiß es. Bücher die genau das thematisieren gibt es einige aber ich finde keines ist so schön und geht so zu Herzen wie "Ausgeliehen" von Rebecca Makkai. Genau, die Autorin die man hier öfter trifft, hat sie mit "Die Optimisten" und "Ich hätte da ein paar Fragen an Sie" doch zwei herausragende Romane geschrieben. "Ausgeliehen" war ihr Debüt und verdient es unbedingt wieder entdeckt zu werden. Lucy ist Bibliothekarin in einer Kleinstadt. Ihr treuester und liebster Besucher der Kinderbücherei ist der zehnjährige Ian. Der Junge hat große Freude am Lesen, was seine religiösen Eltern doch streng reglementieren,christliche Werte sollen vermittelt werden. Zauberei, Magie, Halloween, Evolutionstheorie, Roald Dahl, Louis Lowry,... all dies steht auf der mütterlichen Verbotsliste. Lucy versorgt den aufgeweckten Zehnjährigen dennoch heimlich mit dem guten Lesestoff. Doch eines Tages bemerkt sie eine Veränderung an Ian. Der Grund: seine Eltern schicken ihn jedes Wochenende zu einer "Therapie". Ein Pastor soll das Kind auf den rechten Pfad führen, denn Ian ist zu weich, mag keine typischen "Jungssachen", liest lieber statt Sport zu machen. Nicht auszudenken was passiert wenn das nicht korrigiert wird. Nachdem Lucy ihr Umfeld vergebens auf den emotionalen Missbrauch aufmerksam macht landet das ungleiche Paar aus Bibliothekarin und Kind in einem Auto und ein ungewöhnlicher Roadtrip beginnt. Ich las "Ausgeliehen" sofort nach Erscheinen, 2011, und weiß noch, dass es mich emotional so packte, dass ich sehr geweint habe. Auch beim Wiederlesen hatte es die gleiche Wirkung. Lucy, die versehentlich zur Entführerin wird, ist ein wunderbarer Charakter, man möchte zu gleichen Teilen wie sie sein und sie zur Freundin haben. Genau wie ich ist sie fest davon überzeugt, dass das richtige Buch zur richtigen Zeit ein Leben positiv verändern und in die richtige Richtung führen kann. So ist sie es auch die Ian so annimmt wie er ist. 👇

Book Review 🌿 I absolutely adored Rebecca Makkai’s The Great Believers, so when I came across The Borrower, a story about a children’s librarian and her unlikely friendship with a ten-year-old boy, I was intrigued enough to add it to my ever-growing pile of books. In brief, Ian runs away from home and Lucy, our librarian, joins him on a road trip — whether because she, too, is running away from something or to aid him in his endeavour, that’s for the reader to decide. On this unlikely trip, a lot of history is uncovered and strange encounters are made. This is a sweet enough story, however unlikely its premise. My main struggle with it was that it was simply too long. At times, the story dragged a little bit too much and I grew bored with it — it could have benefited from a good edit and a heavy-handed cut. Then again, we all know by now that the author’s moved on to bigger and better things so it’s brilliant to be able to witness her evolution as a writer. In loving memory of Zoe Trilling. 5/27/1966-9/8/2023 (57). 🤍 One of my favorite actresses when I first became interested in the Horror genre as a child/early teen. A beautiful lady with a magnetic onscreen presence that appeared in 'The Borrower' (1991), 'Dr. Giggles' (1992), 'Night Terrors' (1993), 'Hellbound' (1994), 'Night of the Demons 2' (1994), 'Leprechaun 3' (1995)...and more. A message from filmmaker Kevin Tenney... 'Best known to horror fans for her roles in Night Terrors, Leprechaun 3, and Night of the Demons 2, Zoe Trilling was also part of what we in the industry call a Loop Group, a small collection of actors who add background dialogue and crowd noises to finished films in post production. I worked with her in this capacity on my film Pinocchio's Revenge. She was even prettier in person than she was on film, and much more petite than I expected. She was also genuinely sweet and down to earth as well as being massively talented. When we needed a devastated mother to tell our lead actress over the phone that her son was dead, Zoe broke down into tears, sobbing uncontrollably as she delivered the news, a performance much stronger and more emotional than I could've hope for from a disembodied voice that would be barely audible in the final mix. She was the very epitome of a seasoned professional, in spite of her young age. We tried desperately to locate her to do an interview or commentary track for the new Blu-ray release of Night of the Demons 2, but she was absent from social media of any kind. And now I find that she passed away just last month right here in California. So, here's to you, Zoe. The Borrower by Rebecca Makkai Realistic Fiction, 352 pages Premise: Lucy, a small-town children’s librarian finds herself the unintentional kidnapper of Ian, one of her favorite ten-year-old library patrons. Ian is on the run from his pray-the-gay-away parents (who won’t let him read any popular book series, btw), and he threatens to tell the police that Lucy really did kidnap him if she doesn’t drive him to his grandma’s house. And his grandma lives in Chicago—no wait, Vermont—or was it Canada? Guess we’ll keep driving… Pros: This story is bananas. It’s so funny, both in situation and in characters. You love precocious Ian, but you’re also banging your head against the wall as this preteen isn’t grasping the full weight of the situation. Lucy is in a terrifying position, and I truly had know idea how the book would end, how this oddly dynamic duo would find a way out of their problems. Additionally, the book has certain pages set up like quintessential children’s books (The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Goodnight Moon, etc.), which was a fun surprise. Cons: This book was written in 2011, and view of Russian was different then. That parts that heavily mention Russian heritage and desirable qualities just left me feeling uncertain, as the rest of the book feels so current. I also—SPOILER ALERT!!!—didn’t need the Russian man spying on Lucy and Ian to help save the day; I’d have preferred Lucy’s father or some other character. The Borrower (1991) • John McNaughton 1991 Cannon Films Video Rating: 8.5/10 An underseen movie that really shouldn’t be: The Borrower features an original, zany premise that fits the times perfectly and allows for creative special effects, twists and turns, and a good time overall. The acting, especially in regard to the alien entity, is pretty unnerving. Rebecca Makkai, The Borrower (2011) This was Makkai’s first novel, and in some ways it obviously belongs to the Bush years, but in others, it could have been inspired by today’s headlines. Lucy, the protagonist, is a 26-year-old children’s librarian (throughout the novel, I was acutely aware that she and I are the same age), a job she sort of fell into. Her favorite patron is Ian Drake, a ten-year-old boy whom everyone thinks is gay, including his fundamentalist parents, who restrict his reading material and send him to pre-conversion therapy with “Pastor Bob.” This really echoes the way so many conservative parents have fought libraries and schools in the last few years. Lucy helps this vibrant, hilarious kid by secretly checking books out to him with her own account. Lucy’s monotonous life changes when Ian runs away from home and convinces her to kidnap him. The two commence on a madcap road trip that takes them from Missouri to Vermont. What Lucy does is bad, but also understandable, wanting to give Ian (and herself) a sense of freedom. Along the way, they stop at Lucy’s parents’ place in Chicago and at a friend of her father’s in Pittsburgh, stops that cause Lucy to unravel some of her childhood myths about her father’s escape from Soviet Russia and recalibrate her ethical compass. You can tell this is earlier work than, say, The Great Believers—it tries too hard sometimes, and drags a lot in the middle with adventures that feel unnecessary to the book’s project. Still, the book made me laugh and cry—it’s an absurdist love letter to librarians, queer and misunderstood kids, and above all, children’s literature and the power of reading.
