The Mental Health Co-Responder Program, a collaborative effort between Burrell Behavioral Health and @sgfpolice that provides treatment and services to those experiencing crises or issues that do not break the law, will expand with the support of a $797,798 Crisis Intervention Program grant from the Missouri Department of Public Safety. Tennessee House passes bill allowing armed teachers, sending measure to the governor The Tennessee legislature passed a bill Tuesday that would allow teachers and school staffers to carry concealed handguns in schools, one of the most divisive steps taken by Republican leaders in the year since six people were killed at a school shooting in Nashville. Republican state Rep. Ryan Williams on Tuesday said the bill would bolster school safety. “I believe that this is a method by which we can do that, because what you’re doing is you’re creating a deterrent,” he said on the House floor. Under the legislation, faculty and staff members who wish to carry a concealed handgun on school grounds would need to complete a minimum of 40 hours of approved training specific to school policing each year. Last Friday marked the end of my two-week work experience placement at Vera, Virgin Atlantic’s in-flight magazine with @inkglobal. During this period I worked on cover lines, sub-edited articles, wrote image captions, researched upcoming art events in Virgin Atlantic flight destinations as well as new book, film and TV releases for potential cover stars. Following the demolition of a Springfield home, a grassroots group in the Rountree neighborhood has formed to proactively educate, inform and connect about the value of historical preservation. The Rountree Council for Preservation will kick off these efforts with the Rountree Historical House Tour, which will give community members the opportunity to view five noteworthy homes while learning the history of the neighborhood. Another individual with whom Porter associated and knew to be an NBA bettor subsequently placed an $80,000 (U.S.) parlay proposition bet with an online sportsbook, to win $1.1 million, wagering that Porter would underperform in the March 20 game. Controversy struck this year’s Stronger Men’s Conference sponsored by James River Church due to a sword-swallowing act that opened the two-day event. Alex Magala, a Moldovan performer who has been featured on both “America’s Got Talent “and “Britain’s Got Talent,” is known for his death-defying stunts involving sword swallowing and pole sports. Despite his notoriety, not everyone in attendance enjoyed Magala’s performance. Comparing the routine to “strip club” entertainment, guest pastor Mark Driscoll chastised Magala’s appearance during a presentation on day two of the conference. “The Jezebel spirit opened our event. This is a rebuke and a correction of no one. This is an observation,” said Driscoll. He was promptly asked to leave the stage by James River pastor John Lindell, who voiced disappointment that the visiting speaker had not discussed the matter privately. Tennessee General Assembly passes ‘Jillian’s Law’ in honor of slain Belmont student The Tennessee General Assembly on Monday voted to block criminal defendants who are deemed mentally incompetent and unable to stand trial from legally buying or possessing a gun, legislation sparked by the shooting death of Belmont University student Jillian Ludwig last year. The bill would also require the criminal defendant found incompetent for mental health or intellectual disability reasons to be committed to a facility for mental health treatment. A judge must consider evidence to determine if an individual is not competent to assist in their defense. A finding of incompetency would mandate in-patient treatment and later, if a person is released, outpatient treatment. via @tennesseannews

With the approval of a $6 million Surface Transportation Block Grant to replace the structurally deficient Main Avenue bridge, the City of Springfield aims to use a portion of the funding to purchase the Hotel of Terror, a necessary property to acquire to complete the project. Negotiations between the city and Sterling Mathis, who owns the haunted house, have been ongoing for the past year. Opioids are responsible for one in every four deaths among young adults From 2019 to 2021, premature deaths due to opioid overdoses doubled across Canada — from 3,007 to 6,222 — and accounted for one in four deaths among people aged 20 to 39, new research has found. “That, to me, is staggering. Think about the degree to which these accidental deaths, these preventable deaths, are shortening people’s lives,” said Tara Gomes, a scientist at Unity Health Toronto and senior author of the study. Kenyon Wallace reports on why young people may be particularly vulnerable. By the numbers: In the past eight years, the drug-toxicity crisis has killed more than 40,000 people nationwide, averaging 22 deaths per day in 2023, the Public Health Agency of Canada estimates. A public media giant just walked into Heaven’s newsroom up above. Journalist Robert MacNeil passed away Friday at the age of 93. Alongside Jim Lehrer, he co-anchored @newshour for 20 years and helped guide millions through extraordinary times with his intelligent, passionate and humane storytelling, refusing to sensationalize the news out of respect for viewers like you. He was on the ground in Dallas when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. He interviewed Martin Luther King Jr., Ayatollah Khomeini, and former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. But he had his biggest breakthrough with the 1973 gavel-to-gavel primetime coverage of the Senate Watergate hearings. His former colleague @judywoodruffpbs: “I am devastated at the passing of a dear friend and someone who helped transform American television news, Robin MacNeil.
