Tucked away in the Pearson Creek Valley just east of town, Lovett Pinetum is a botanical oasis born from the “magnificent obsession” of Springfield pathologist Robert Lovett over five decades ago. As a hobby naturalist, Lovett cultivated a collection of more than 4,000 individual conifers from a wide variety of species spread across 108 acres. There aren’t many deciduous conifers in our area --these plants are frequently referred to as evergreens for a reason. One beautiful exception is tamarack (Larix laricina), also known as American larch. Its needle-like leaves turn a brilliant golden color in the fall before they drop for the winter, serving as a nice contrast to the evergreen conifers growing nearby. Not all conifers are evergreen, such as the dawn redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides), which produces both female cones (first picture) and male cones (second picture) that decorate the tree all winter long in the absence of leaves. The dawn redwood is essentially a living fossil, believed to be growing more than 65 million years ago when life on earth looked much different than it does now. The tree was initially only known from the fossil record, until a live specimen was discovered in China in the 1940’s. You really ought to take stock of how lucky you are to live on planet with these beings. Entire ecosystems are built around them, and they make the atmosphere that supports these ecosystems. As far as you know, there's no other corner in the universe with the kind of conditions to give rise to these creatures. Be kind to them.
