File Under: B #BonIver, #BloodBankEP (2009) The musical hermitage of Bon Iver's 1st LP, 2007's For Emma, Forever Ago, & the narrative biography surrounding #JustinVernon's creation of it in the depths of winter at his father's cabin in the Wisconsin woods, is the stuff of indie-folk legend. Following a break up & dealing with a bout of mono, Vernon left North Carolina, retreating to his father's cabin, where he mainly lay low in solitude but also started tinkering around with a few musical instruments & other bare-bones sonic tools. He also watched Northern Exposure on DVD, from which he appropriated the French for "good winter" (bon hiver) -- dropping the H -- to name his new musical project. The twice platinum wintry debut album looms large in the indie folk archive, but Vernon's post-Emma experimentations -- during which Bon Iver became a fully-fledged band -- have been just as impressive, tho devotees to his rustic beginnings have bemoaned the increasing flirtations with digital technology on subsequent records. The 1st was this 2009 EP, revolving around the title track, #BloodBank, a For Emma outtake whose more electric sensibility didn't fit well with the debut. Its slight grunge undertow is magnified by a Coachella performance viewable on YouTube. Vernon's label, #Jagjaguwar, describes it as the fire you stoke to get you through the cold winter of Emma. Of all the tunes here, it feels most like the sonic transition to spring & Bon Iver's 2011 sophomore LP. #BeachBaby feels like the cresting of early spring, when the trees are still bare & the lake is still frozen but the sun is peeking out & you hear the ice cracking. The keyboard driven #Babys sounds like a demo for Vernon's Volcano Choir side project. It's all about the buildup, much like the closer #Woods, which, signaling Vernon's digital deep dive, is a mostly a cappella tune with multilayered harmonies & deliberately copious autotuning. Kanye West sampled "Woods" on his 2010 single, "Lost in the World."

UTOPIA 💼 Contrary to the album's title, there doesn't seem to be a perfect world described, emphasized by the lyrics and visuals. Both seem closer to a dystopia than a utopia. We start off with "HYAENA" (where we're told Travis is in a sort of middle-Earth, in neither a good nor bad space) and follow along as he embarks on reaching fulfillment. He acquires more jewelery, cars, houses, and women only to have a moment of reflection on "PARASAIL" (narrated by Dave Chappelle from Travis' internal monologue) - it appears his Utopia lies in enjoying every experience and not material aspects. James Blake and 21 Savage assist in closing the album off with "TIL FURTHER NOTICE." The trio sit in retrospect, only to then leave us questioning what comes next. Much like it’s two acts, I perceive the lyrics “What might have been lost” in The Wolves’s dying embers in two ways. “What might have been lost” is not a thought but a feeling. It’s the feeling of missed opportunity after a break up; the key that locks the eternal shackles; the replaying of your shared time over and over and over and over again, trying to rationalise where things went wrong and why you should still be together. But, in fact, they are not perfect. They are not the person on that pedal stool. Nothing has been lost. “What might have been lost” is what we tell ourselves to maintain this person’s pristine image, because for some sick reason, our minds would rather live on in endless pursuit than move on. Simultaneously, “What might have been lost” is a fear. When two people are bound but fear their circumstances, they tentatively wait for “the right time”. Bon Iver - Bon Iver (S/T) (2011) Bon Iver sees Justin Vernon blow his previously very reserved and shy indie sound out of the water, with eclectic production that ranges from somewhat similar to the Wisconsin sessions that produced For Emma to a more layered and sometimes even electronic sound that never strays away from the organic nature of the record. This album’s soundscape is truly what makes it so special. It is a mixture of everything that makes Bon Iver great as a solo project with profoundly touching vocal harmonies, simple yet mesmerizing guitar licks and incredibly lush production. This album’s concept is really quite simple but also incredibly effective. Using places as inspiration to create a soundscape is both personal and relatable. Everyone has that one place that is symbolized by a smell, a sound or view. This album is a masterpiece in describing places using only sounds. It really evokes that vivid picture of a place that holds dear to you in incredible details. This is if synesthesia was an album.
