Ok, this one’s likely to be of niche interest - probably a very select niche. As well as designing the Dalavich cabins featured in my last post, Graham Brooks of Welsh architectural practice Hird & Brooks used the same modular system to design a club house come community centre. Completed in 1980, it was intended as a meeting place for cabiners and the local community - and still continues as a community centre and social club, and very hospitable it is too. I love walking in Eredine Forest. A lot of the trees have recently been felled which has opened up views over Loch Awe and up to Ben Cruachan. It’s 1126m high and beneath the central corrie there is a huge underground hydro-electric power station. My aim is to get views from the top by early next summer. A few posts back (oi, you at the back, pay attention) we were discussing mid-century holiday cabins designed by the celebrated Welsh architect Graham Brooks - well, here are a few more, this time on the shores of Loch Awe in Argyle. In the late-70s, the Forestry Commission was contemplating a nationwide network of tasteful and tucked-away cabin sites and, from a shortlist of 17 architectural practices, Hird & Brooks was selected (helped along by the cabins Brooks had already designed in Wales). Initially, just three sites were completed - this one, Deerpark in Cornwall, and Keldy in North Yorkshire - before the plans were scuppered by the incoming Tory government. Many moons later, a separate company, called Forest Holidays, was spun out of the Forestry Commission which started bulldozing additional sites across the country. It also ‘redeveloped’ the original Hird & Brooks sites in Cornwall and Keldy. Luckily, this one was sold off to private owners and around 30 of the original Brooks cabins still remain - some lived in, some private holiday homes, some let out to the hoi polloi. Kilchurn Castle was my last stop while heading back to Edinburgh. Built on a rocky peninsula on Loch Awe- it was first constructed in the mid 15th century as the base of the Campbells of Glenorchy. Day 39 - Great day! Best weather so far in Scotland and a dream fulfilled! Having done some genealogical research, we knew that our family name, McCorkle, originated in the Argyll region of Scotland near Oban. McCorkle originally came from the Gaelic “Mac Thorcaill”, or son of Thorcaill / Torquil, a Danish prince who came to Scotland in the ninth century. Over the years, the name has been translated a variety of ways, including McCorquodill, MacCorkill, and most frequently near Oban, MacCorquodale. I found a guide to show us around the Oban area, including two churches and two castles of historical significance to the MacCorquodale clan. We also happened to meet the gentleman who bought the ancestral MacCorquodale lands, including where the ruined castle and manor are. He’s a MacLeod, but the MacCorquodales are a sept of the MacLeod clan and he’s keen on keeping the MacCorquodale legacy alive. (He even runs a MacCorquodale website!)
