It's finally spring - happy Imbolc / St Brigid's Day! There are many sites in West Cork named in honour of this important saint/goddess including St Brigid's Well at Lough Hyne, photographed here. Lough Hyne, County Cork Ireland Lough Hyne is a fully marine sea lough in West Cork, Ireland, about 5 km southwest of Skibbereen. It was designated as Ireland's first Marine Nature Reserve in 1981. Lough Hyne was probably a freshwater lake until about four millennia ago (2000 BC, during the Atlantic Bronze Age), when rising sea levels flooded it with saline ocean water. The lake is now fed by tidal currents that rush in from the Atlantic through Barloge Creek. Iโm excited to share that we have just signed a new contract with the National Parks and Wildlife Service in Ireland to survey the reefs at Lough Hyne using 3D photogrammetry in collaboration with @matteocollina_uwp and @underwater_biodiversity The very small size of the cliffs at Lough Hyne make it a perfect site in many ways for this, except for the VERY low visibilityโฆ.. We hope this will replace the quadrat approach we have been using to monitor changes as we will be able to survey the entire cliffs.
