Here is my final submission for the @makerschallengecentral Scrollsaw Challenge. The theme of “Drink it up” means a whole different thing to me these days and I decided to represent all the breastfeeding mamas out there who feel like a 24/7 milk bar. Thankfully my little rainbow baby is quite happy to take the bottle too so I can get a break from time to time but man pumping is a whole other thing too 😅. I am feeling really grateful for this challenge coming when it did, as it has pushed me to get back into my shop and to get creative after having Innes. It has given me the confidence to start accepting some custom work in the next few weeks once my mum and my in-laws head back home to Scotland. My work windows will be shorter but I have proven to myself that I can still do it even with a baby. ✨Purple Berry✨ This was one of the most special items I’ve had the privilege of making. A customer and her friends came to me for a dinosaur or dragon for their coworker and dear friend who is fighting breast cancer and has three very young kids at home. They shared with me about their precious friend’s strength and the way her spirit radiates so I landed on this color scheme to showcase that. They also asked that the item be weighted, so that was a fun challenge! My kids named her Purple Berry and as I crocheted her, I prayed dozens of times for this mama and her sweet family as they walk this trial. My grandma passed away too soon after a tough fight with breast cancer when I was a little girl, and this pretty dino was a special way for me to honor her too. A few years ago, my dad relayed a story that has stuck with me in such a profound way that it literally moves me to tears every time I think about it. Some of his associates were hosting a gathering at his ranch, which is right on the beach in Baja California. A woman from Mexicali, about a three hour drive inland, arrived and to my father’s surprise, quietly told him that she had never seen the ocean before. He said she walked down to the shoreline, weeping, sat down in the shallow waters and spent the whole afternoon there, just soaking it all in. The whole afternoon. I am sitting in a coffee shop with tears streaming down my face as I type this (typical). How much we take for granted. Rather, how much *I* take for granted. Proximity to the sea has always brought me comfort, and I’ve woven several abstract fiber versions of the ocean over the years. This is my most recent, and probably my favorite. Want to know a moment that I didn't prepare for as a handmade business owner? This includes marketing, processing orders, and bookkeeping. ✅ I also delegate tasks to lighten my workload. This frees up so much of my time and energy. ✅ I set specific work hours. The thing about working at home is that I can work whenever I want to, but having a routine helps a ton. ✅ I never neglect my well-being, especially since running a business is so demanding. I always prioritize a healthy and happy Mei! This one was really hard for me to learn, since I was raised to put myself before everyone else. And after implementing the above? Our tallow can be used on any intact skin that you would use moisturizer - head to toe! WanderDevil is also for use on intact skin. It is infused with various plants that have been used traditionally for more acute issues including rashes, bites, stings, wounds and cuts, but please consult your medical provider prior to use for those issues.* That brings us to the next section — caution! You’ll notice our products have a caution statement. Because the plants have not been thoroughly vetted and determined to be safe for all by those in charge, we advise to consult a provider before use if you have a medical condition, allergy, are pregnant or nursing, for use in children, or with any other concern. While most can usually tolerate plantain (in our whipped tallow and one of the plants in all our body products), yarrow may need to be avoided by those on blood thinners (WanderDevil, WildOne and Resurrection). All of the plants (especially devil’s club) may need to be avoided if pregnant or nursing due to lack of studies. To be completely honest, my kitchen doesn’t always look like this now that a little one strapped to my chest most of the day. And my floors are dirty… it’s spring in Alaska and I have 2 dogs.
