135 | Monday, April 29, 2024 Monday sprint day action? Let’s do it. I’ve always been a really stiff dude. Ever since 8th grade I’ve developed muscle easily but at a cost of not being the most fluid. And that shows through my running. I’ve always been a decently fast guy for my size, but form has always been something I’ve had to work on. Especially now after not sprinting everyday through football, it was easy for my form to get bad. I don’t like how I’m bunched up and my shoulders aren’t fluid as I’m running. So here’s a drill where I sit with my legs out in front and just move my arms, eventually getting to where I’m literally bouncing up and down 😂 looks a little goofy I know but it translates. So here I videoed some starts, which is a lot of what I worked on today, and got into more stride work after. Gotta keep my elbows tight and hands shooting up and then back. My legs are feeling good, I just need to work on being fluid and relaxed during the run. Drafted up a plan for my presentation, was a success. Got one tomorrow as well so need to prepare similarly. Afterward Dobson invited me over for some burgers and brats! So I swooped some $3.99 cookies from Kroger. They were gas. Had about 6 of them lol. And you know we had to whoop up on Kerr and Splaine in cornhole…. Down 2-0 in the series, we stayed calm, came back 3 straight to win best of 5, and they challenged us to best of 7, so we won 1 more to finish the job. Cornhole champions right here! 134 | Sunday, April 28, 2024 Amazing to see the gym almost completely empty. I’m all for seeing people I know in the gym but something about it being quiet is just the best. Chest and shoulders today, I’ve been seeing some increases in weight for certain lifts. My beach and incline bench seem to be improved a lot and I don’t have any shoulder or wrist pain. Supersetting leaned over lateral raises with plate front raises. Wasn’t too heavy but I was focusing on using less traps and getting that squeeze at the top. More shoulder cable raises, stepping further away from the pulley so on the way down I got a good stretch across my shoulder. Cable flies, press, and dips, and of course my neck exercises, gave me an essential Sunday morning pump. What an exciting day of going to the library and studying and then driving home to study again. Finished my investments sheet, now I’m just gonna work on practice problems till Wednesday. Went over all 3 presentations and finished up some slides. Reviewing for the one tomorrow for Org Man. Should be a piece of cake. The only one I’m slightly worried about is my AI presentation. I looked at it tonight and it still doesn’t make sense. I just need to practice my explanation and it’ll be alright. I’m not gonna say I feel burnt out, but man I’m ready for school to be done. I’m ready to go home for a bit and see my parents, and just refocus my thoughts for a bit. I’m enjoying this process of pushing myself to be better. I think that the pursuit of growth is what constitutes living; if there’s no growth, there’s death. Finding just ONE aspect per day to work on is totally feasible. 133 | Saturday, April 27, 2024 Good ol recovery session after 8.5 hours of sleep? Can’t get much more powerful than that. PVC was my workout partner today, did a bunch of shoulder and back mobility with it. I don’t even know what I would call these that I video’d. But it worked the hell out of my shoulders. Hip work after that. These were hard man. Way harder than your typical fire hydrants. Extending the leg out while keeping your hip and glutes flexed is the key. Stronger through all ranges of motion, not just a couple. That’s how you prevent injury and sustain mobility for years and years. Rolled out the quads and IT bands. Do you think rolling IT bands is beneficial? Can it contribute to less tension on the knee joint? If you see this and have an opinion on it lmk. I’ll have to continue doing research but it felt good to end off the session. Spring game today, weird sitting in the stands for the first time. Officially a NARP (non athletic regular person) hahaha. I had to take advantage of the $3 hot dogs ofc! Good to see my boys ballin out. Hoping for a good upcoming season. Then afterward me and Kerr played some pickleball. And I got my ass worked. Tennis skills do translate to pickleball. Lost to him 4 times even with a 5 point handicap for the last 2 hahaha. I was sweating bricks but it was a good time. My allergies whooped my ass tonight. Spending a good amount of time outside this time of year is tough. My nose would not stop running earlier. I’m trying to drink a bunch of water and took some allergy meds. It’s just gotta run it’s course. I did a bit of research tonight but not much. Gotta get a good start tomorrow as I’ll be preparing for a 3 day stretch of 3 presentations and an investments test. In 10 days I’ll be headed into my last semester of college… flown by is an understatement. 131 | Thursday, April 25, 2024 Was not a fun day in the gym. Reverse lunges were the death of me. 2 sets 8 each of alternating legs and then 2 sets of 8 all on one leg then switch to the other. Then did 2x15 heel elevated squat. Quads were cooked, so the rest of the time was spent on hamstrings and auxiliaries. Tried this standing hamstring cable machine, I love it. My left hamstring is still a lot weaker. I can’t expect to get back to sprinting 100% if I still have this imbalance. Consistent attention on hamstrings is a priority. Tib and calf raises to finish the day. Going to Walmart at 9 am is the best time. More parking spaces, better food selection, and less crackheads. It was a very enjoyable experience. Went to the library after. The past 3 days I’ve spent about 12 hours in the library. Not fun but allowed me to focus on 3 presentations I have coming up plus my bio test today. Easy A. Glad I was prepared tho. Dinner was simple rice and beef, with salt and pepper ofc. Didn’t eat as much because I went to Fuzzy’s with some friends. Got a couple tacos and a beer. Was just gonna get a bottle but it came out in a mug. Oh well, no complaints. Got back home and it was tempting to just chill on my phone. I knew I needed to get at least some form of work in. So I practiced along with the excel shortcuts again. I know, this kinda work isn’t really that strenuous. But it’s nights like this that I remember that my past self wouldn’t have done anything productive with the hour I had before bed. “How do you have the time to do all of this?” Over the past 4.5 weeks since starting to turn my life around, I’ve heard this so many times! How do I have time to food prep? To train? To sleep? How am I more happy and energetic than before when I have to work harder at this new lifestyle?! It’s a cliche, but I have the exact same number of hours in my day as everyone else. Yes, it is a juggling act. Yes, things have to give on most days, because I CAN’T do it all. So for demonstration purposes, I made a list of what fills my days. 1-5 are my non-negotiables (job unfortunately because I kinda have to turn up to that 😜). But seriously, my life is very full. Don’t get me wrong: I would dearly love to have more time for hobbies, TV/movies and seeing friends more regularly, but unfortunately if I want to get healthy and stay healthy in this world I must include food prep, training/NEAT and sleep in my non-negotiables. Of course there will be special occasions or indeed entire weeks where I won’t train or do food prep in future, but this is my general rule for how life has to be if I want to be the best version of myself. Thankfully, preparing delicious, healthy meals and training are actually hobbies for me AND I have beautiful friends who also train (in gym, running and Taekwondo) so I get friend time in too 🥰. Yes, I suck at getting my housework/laundry done, but have an amazing hubby who does the lion’s share of that so I can focus on the groceries and food prep for each week. I know it sucks, but there are no shortcuts, no way to get extra time. You just have to make your own list, workout what can actually be sacrificed and prioritise the basics. 130 | Wednesday, April 24, 2024 Long day. Didn’t really even want to lift at first. But it became better as I got moving. Pretty much always how it works. After a quick warm up I got into the heavy hitters- 3x10 ez bar curls superset with 3x10 pushdowns. Then immediately after did 3x10 db hammer curls superset with 3x10 skullcrushers. I was toast just from these. I aim to do my heavy sets in the beginning and then do more SA isolation moves after. Also did some wrist curls using this set up that I haven’t tried before. It was good but had a hard time keeping my arms fully on the box. Will try again another time for sure. Protein + creatine shake, breakfast, load of laundry, studying for bio, and then headed to library. Breaks up my morning just a bit. Started my cheat sheet for investments. This shit is gonna be completely full by next week. Got a lot to cover for the final. Then I read and studied more. Jamming to some Coldplay and nostalgic vibes too. I want to make a big playlist soon w all my favorites. I swear I usually am better at switching up my dinners but it just made sense to make this again since I have a lot of potatoes. Gotta get some more rice and pasta at the store tomorrow. Long call with mom and dad, and then I nerded out with learning some keyboard shortcuts for financial modeling in excel. Have a feeling that I’ll be working with these a lot this summer. Best I refresh my excel navigation skills. Also, forgot how tasty starbursts are. 128 | Monday, April 22, 2024 Cold shower and breakfast was a great start to the day. Got some work in before heading to investments. Project due date got pushed back a week which is clutch. I’ve got such a busy school week coming up so gonna be preparing. Tmrw I’ll get to the library and start figuring out what I need for the investments test and work toward the 3 presentations I have lol. The gym at 1pm on a Monday was insaneee. Finally got a bench and played with the Ben franklins for a couple sets. Never pressed this heavy and didn’t want to make a fool out of myself with no spotter. Flies next with some lateral raises. Then the boys showed up and we hit incline incline, shoulder press, and SA cable press. Chest was gassed. Mixing up the gym time and seeing people I don’t normally see was definitely cool. 2 classes, my AI group for the final project is smart and literally already finished before I even got the chance to work on it. I’m not trying to look like a lazy group member but I genuinely don’t know what to help with now lol. Got a finals care package with some snacks in the mail which was nice. Back to the basics with dinner, added some cholula, can’t beat it. Thanks to John we got a repository uploaded to git lab. I’m gonna be working on a README to explain the steps of the work I do for documentation. Also looked into utilizing AI for data ETL and visualizations. Pretty cool stuff. Splurged on new bedding for Harper Rose from Beddy’s - pretty shams and all of the pillows her FAV blanket she takes everywhere (IYKYK). It is THE BEST quality, so beautiful, easy to make and worth every penny. BUT…then HR got a sharpie or some type of permanent marker on the big sham! I immediately treated it w OxiClean, soaked, washed it and it did.not.budge. 😡 Fast forward to MANY months later. Washed all our sheets and blankets this weekend (smells like heaven) and decided to try the stain on the sham again w plant based magic. I CAN NOT EVEN TELL WHICH ONE IT WAS!!! 🙌🏻💞🤯 PSA # 1: People are scared to try safer, healthier, non-toxic cleaning and laundry solutions because they are convinced they won’t work. 127 | Sunday, April 21, 2024 Fun times last night, into this morning, and today. Turned out to be perfect weather. Started off the day right with getting my name spelled wrong for the first time ever, like how tf? For lunch we had to hit up Terry Blacks again! Met up with John there. Real good conversations as always! Chilled for a bit after and then hit the road, not before stopping at P Terry’s! Idk who Terry is but they really out here saving Austin. I had to tubb out while I was there. Took a fat nap on the way back too. Had a recovery day scheduled so I was able to do everything I needed to from my room. 30 minutes of focused stretching and rolling out really helps you get of the funk of long car rides and sleeping on a couch. Learned some more about alteryx and connecting workflows to powerbi. It has a free trial but after that it costs $5200 a year. Wtf. It’s really made for organizations but I want to try it out. I’ll look into the free trial more if I want to start it or not. 💖 4 weeks in 💖 My weight has actually gone up on the scales this week, but my measurements are down and my progress pics are showing more change. One thing that blows me away in this picture is how much better my posture is; I’ve already noticed my neck/back/shoulders don’t ache as much when I’m working. This is a really important non-scale victory for me! It was helpful to re-watch @coachmarkcarroll education videos last night to remind myself not to be disappointed by my numbers slowing, because this is exactly what’s expected to happen 3-4 weeks into a fat loss phase. Also, my period is due in 4 days so much of the scale number is no doubt fluid… and will also explain why my hip measurement is up slightly this morning 😏. Im trusting the process and sprinting to the finish line. To be honest, I love a rainy day - if I'm inside. It's been raining since this morning. We have had the brightest lightning and the loudest thunder ever. Our pool looks like it's going to overflow. From our sitting room window, I can see that the area below our neighbor's house, which is about 15 feet below our homes, looks like a pond. ⁣ This is a great quote from a great writer. I can handle rainy days. When our luggage never made it to New Orleans the day after Christmas 2022 (the great Southwest Airlines debacle), we calmly went shopping and replaced almost everything we needed for 4 days in NOLA, including a new suitcase to bring it all back. (FYI, Southwest told us to do that and they paid us every penny we spent back.)⁣ I'm not sure about Christmas lights. I never deal with the those. You know what drives me crazy? Trying to separate the layers of napkins for a decoupage project. It's a small thing and I eventually get it done. I wonder what Maya Angelou would have thought of that dilemma. What kind of person would she think of me that a cocktail napkin can drive me crazy? I hope she would laugh. I hope she would say, "don't sweat the small stuff". I'll just enjoy this rainy day. How lucky am I that I get to wake up to an alarm on my iPhone at 4am, in my toasty-warm, king-sized bed, in the two-storey home we could afford to build in the peak of the housing/building crisis in Australia, with our two healthy babies sleeping peacefully in their toasty-warm beds with full tummies from the night before? How lucky am I that I get to sit and drink hot, freshly-ground and brewed coffee from my fancy A.F. coffee machine in my heated kitchen, then drive in my new car with heated leather seats to the gym where I can afford to pay a membership? How lucky am I that when I get to the gym, I can do literally anything I choose, because I have two legs and two arms and all of my organ systems function perfectly well? How lucky am I that I get to go to work in a job that I once only ever dreamed of… no, being a doctor is NOT as glamorous as the movies would make it out to be and NO we are not paid especially well for the amount of work we put in… but far out, I am so blessed that I get to be involved in the care of the people I see every day… for some it is the happiest day and for some, unfortunately it is the scariest and saddest day of their lives. When I write this all out I feel like I need to give myself a few uppercuts for all the times I’ve complained about how busy or tired I am, because GOD I’ve got an amazing life. Honestly, if I complain about it then I’m just a spoiled brat. Yes, I’ve worked hard for all of these things, but I also feel incredibly blessed for having them. Check your privilege. 124 | Thursday, April 18, 2024 Didn’t have many new things to video this morning. Standard arm day, starting out with heavy pushdowns is a new favorite of mine. Then getting into a variety of curls and into some forearm work. Never skip forearms. Just like how you can never skip calves. tHeY’Re jUsT gEnEtIcS. Go get that scientology bullshit out of here. Literally had no school work to do today. Just sat through an online class. Glad I was able to get it all out of the way early this week. So today was spent on, you guessed it, powerbi. Here’s just one that I made. These will automatically update as the each months data is appended to the dataset. You know what else these are good for besides compiling info? Interviews. It’s one thing to talk about what skills you have, but it’s another to show examples of it. Came in clutch during my last interview, and I’m sure I’ll make use out of them in future ones. I originally thought I was just going to watch half of the last movie tonight. But f it. I watched it all. And man it was so good. Obviously the books went into so much more detail, but the depictions in the movie really brought the setting to life. That does it for my time in the Tolkien world. For now. Now onto Arrakis. These aren’t just nuggies. They symbolise everything about how I’m feeling this week. I try to be all Positive Polly on here, but today just want to share the reals. I’ve hit a wall. I’m so freaking tired. I’m on my week off between runs of 7 night shifts in a row and I agreed to do an extra day shift tomorrow because we’re down a doctor at the moment. I’m heading into a hugely busy weekend before starting nights again on Monday and I feel exhausted already. Today I fell asleep on the couch watching the basketball (yewww Bulls!! 👊🏼). I woke up 30 minutes later, the afternoon felt like it had got away from me and the last thing I felt like doing was training. I also REALLY wanted to run and REALLY wanted to go to Taekwondo training tonight. I chose to go to the gym, because weight training should come first. I threw on whatever clean clothes I could find and felt like a complete potato when I walked into the gym. An hour later, I felt amazing! As I drove home I thought “I C.B.F. to cook dinner… I’ll grab the kids Maccas on the way home… then I’ll go to Taekwondo…” The thought was somehow instantly replaced with the knowledge I had everything at home to make nuggies from scratch. So I got home and made nuggies and chippies from scratch in the air fryer. It was fiddly A.F. and took me an hour but it was SO satisfying to see the kids and hubby gobble them up. Zero additives, zero fillers, just chicken mince, flour, egg, olive oil and seasonings. I missed Taekwondo. But I feel like I did a really good thing for my family and I. So this is my message to remind you to J.F.D.I. (Just f*cking do it).
