I recently went to see this wonderful one-person play, 'The Return of Benjamin Lay', at the Finborough Theatre. Lay was a Quaker, lover of humanity and the natural world, and outspoken advocate for the abolishment of slavery. This in 18th century England and North America. Thanks to the historian Marcus Rediker for excavating his story and bringing it to the stage with poet Naomi Wallace, and to actor Mark Povinelli for bringing Benjamin Lay to life. BOM! Fui enganado duas primeira, a primeira porque fui atraído pelo Nightmare (pesadelo) no título e já queria coisa de terror e a segunda por ser um remake de um filme de 1947 com o mesmo nome e lançado no Brasil como O Beco das Almas Perdidas. Quis ver o filme por causa do Del Toro e do elenco FANTÁSTICO que fez parte do projeto e por isso não me arrependi, mesmo não sendo nada do que eu esperava é um bom filme sim, uma história interessante, bem desenvolvida e com atuações espetaculares de todo mundo, alguns personagens bem interessantes e uma boa reviravolta no final. Séance 29 : Nightmare alley. Del Toro signe son onzième film. Dans la première moitié, le réalisateur s'en donne à cœur joie sur le plan visuel et s'inspire d'un chef d'œuvre du cinéma fantastique de 1932 de Tod Browning : Freaks. Les univers de LA Confidential et de Shutter island rencontrent le cinéma de Tim Burton des années 80. Del Toro prend le temps de dérouler son histoire et son univers, tout en continuant de décortiquer la psyché humaine. Le récit prend son temps avant d'enchaîner avec sa partie urbaine, où le personnage principal, bonimenteur et médium, va pouvoir pleinement exprimer sa cupidité. La seconde partie, dans le monde feutré des notables, regarde davantage vers le thriller. Paradoxalement, c’est dans cet univers plus feutré, qu’on trouve les véritables monstres. Tout est plus cynique, plus violent, plus détestable que dans le monde des forains. La rencontre et la relation qui se noue avec la psychiatre permet un parallèle entre le monde des charlatans et le monde médical, l'un abuse de l'autre, mais lequel ? Si le film connaît quelques facilités scénaristiques, il est passionnant de bout en bout, tour à tour drôle, intriguant et tragique. Un final qui achève de transformer ce Rise and fall en conte moral d'une effroyable poésie. Le film est une incroyable galeries de personnages dominée par une extraordinaire Cate Blanchett d'une froideur aussi séduisante qu'effrayante. Rooney Mara est magnifique de candeur et d'électricité. Dommage qu'on ne voit pas plus Tony Colette. Nightmare Alley est donc un nouveau film de monstres de son réalisateur, à la différence que cette fois, ce sont des humains qui montrent leurs difformités mentales et comportementales. Une histoire de cirque, de médium et de manipulation qui se retourne contre son architecte. I lentissimi movimenti di macchina e una fotografia vivida, immersiva, intrappolano da subito lo spettatore nelle situazioni e negli spazi a esse vincolati, anche gli oggetti, i cimeli, diventano "testimoni". Mentre il rosso, dei neon e della vernice, si sposa con l'oro delle luminarie e del sole, la sceneggiatura raggiunge completezza ed efficacia nella recitazione: studio e dialogo, confidenza e seduzione, confronto e prevaricazione. El Juego que vemos con el personaje de Lilith, logra fascinar en lo visual ya que en un gran contraplano el uso de la luz va reforzando la personalidad de cada uno, al inicio ella candorosa y Stan frío y distante, en otra sesión, en el mismo plano empalmados ella es quien está cubierta de una sombra y él tiene la luz, quizá porque piensa que ella no puede dominarlo aún. Pero vemos como a veces es difícil hacer cine serio en la actualidad, como diría Guillermo del Toro, porque a veces las películas serias y que logran contar de manera diferente y que no será igual como un final feliz. Algo que podemos ver que es el gran trabajo de producción del director Guillermo del Toro. Y aunque no logre ser tan buena ni una de las mejores del Toro, se podría decir que es bien ejecutada, como las sorpresas logran llegar en el 2do acto de la historia.

Guillermo del Toro é mais que um diretor, já se tornou um estilo, pelo menos na fotografia e iluminação. O BECO DO PESADELO (“Nightmare Alley”, 2021) O ambicioso vigarista Stanton Carlisle, que tem um talento para manipular pessoas, se une a uma clarividente e seu marido mentalista para enganar um perigoso magnata com a ajuda de uma misteriosa psiquiatra, que pode ser sua maior oponente. Guillermo del Toro é mais que um diretor, já se tornou um estilo, pelo menos na fotografia e iluminação. Este é um filme noir, com um elenco fantástico, ótima atuação de Bradley Cooper, enredo envolvente e, na minha opinião, tratando de monstros diferentes daqueles que o diretor costuma colocar na tela. It is a very engrossing storyline with some really interesting characters. El Callejón de las Almas Perdidas (2021) Para mí, Del Toro es un imprescindible, pero no sé qué me pasa con esta película que aunque la vi de principio a fin, noto que le falta ese toque Del Toro que hace de sus películas algo único. La historia está bien y te atrapa. El vestuario y los escenarios también están muy currados, pero me parece que la fotografía y la BSO se queda muy, muy corta. Hay pocas escenas que me hayan dejado con la boca abierta o que haya pensado que es una de las mejores escenas que haya visto en el cine. Eso sí, se nota que los actores están muy compenetrados y es bueno que hasta los secundarios tengan tu trocito para ellos mismos. Y el final, me encantan ese tipo de finales. En ‘El callejón de las almas perdidas’ (2021), Stan Carlisle, un hombre que huye de su pasado, acaba trabajando en una feria ambulante en la adquiere los conocimientos necesarios para ejercer de “adivino”. Es cuando decide estafar a millonarios, pero sus actos tendrán consecuencias impredecibles 💵 Su director, Guillermo del Toro, se toma todo el tiempo necesario (quizá demasiado) para sentar las bases del universo que nos presenta. Ordena todos los elementos y personajes para que la historia funcione. Sin embargo, este proceso provoca que el conflicto real de la película llegue demasiado tarde, dividiendo la película en dos partes diferenciadas sin dejar que esta última pueda exprimir su potencial. El apartado técnico y artístico es perfecto; Del Toro encuentra su estilo en este film noir donde da con el clavo con la atmósfera y con las peculiaridades que pueda haber en una feria ambulante.
