While on an evening walk, this little guy darted out of the grass and came right up to me and my sister. He seemed unconcerned about our presence. I got a few images taken, before he darted away into the grass, but this one turned out the best. Meadow Vole coming out into the evening. Rodents, emerging from shallow burrows in the creek bed, made by chopping stalks of dry grass over small indents the vole can run through to gather seeds and other foodstuffs or nesting material. If you’re walking alongside prairie and start to hear quick movement in the grass, chances are it’s one of these guys running back to its underground hidey-hole, present throughout Canada and the continental US! Fine mesh plastic netting can be deadly for small animals! People put it up around shrubs to "protect" them, but it's like a gill net on land. This meadow vole was lucky. Delilah spotted it while we were walking and I was able to get some scissors and cut it free. Fingers crossed I got it all and the cuts left by the plastic cutting into its neck will heal. It scurried off under some leaves after resting for a few seconds so I wasn't able to get a super close look. If you use this type of netting. Stop. If you see it loose, get rid of it. I've seen so many small critters killed by it. Even had to cut a garter snake out of some a few years ago. #meadowvole #cuterodents #rescuemission

Flying Cat. I have a theory that people who like birds of prey, especially owls, are closely related to, and/or evolutionarily convergent with, “cat people.” And I know that many people love raptors, because they are predators and we are drawn to admire them. But so many of these raptors subsist entirely on mice, and have the same diet as a house cat—or a barn cat, if you will. Last night, at the ancient prairie south of Columbus, Ohio, we were privileged to watch several Shorties catch several mice. One particular owl dove into the grass right next to the road (and close to me), and popped up a moment later with a mouthful. I loved the opportunity to capture the “cat” with the “mouse,” face-to-face with both! If this picture makes you squirm a little bit, remember that you are a mammal, just like this little Meadow Vole, and that the owl is a little dinosaur, and a distant relative of Tyrannosaurus rex. 1/6/24. Common throughout Oregon in grasslands, meadow voles (voles in the genus Microtus) tend to be fairly secretive and not often seen. This one decided it was too busy eating grass to care that I was lying on my stomach taking pictures of it while it went about its business. I'm not an expert in differentiating between the two most likely species of meadow vole in our area—the Townsend's Vole and the Gray-tailed Vole—but I think they're equally cute, and hopefully an expert can weigh in on exactly which vole decided to grace us with their presence. MEADOW VOLES remain active throughout the winter, but we rarely see them as they spend most time below the snow. Tunnels are dug through the snow, down to the frozen ground (called the subnivean layer), where they spend time feeding and even form communal roosts to stay warm. "Around the world in 80 Animals" is a new online series from @roseannhanson . This is a follow-up to the 80 trees series she did over the last 2 years, but even BETTER! When I follow along on Zoom, as today, it is a lesson in fast sketching. I missed the first animal, but the sessions are available as recordings so I will go back for it. Roseann suggests shapes and colors while sketching each 15 minute animal, very useful to beginners. She goes pencil, to ink, to watercolor. But, I kept up by going straight to ink. The added info about each animal makes this series nature education meets art instruction. The series are free, with an available tip jar, by registering through her website. On a gorgeous fall morning last week, we received a heartbreaking call from a concerned resident of Boulder. Riding her bike down a peaceful, tree-lined path, she came across two baby Meadow Voles, lying on the pavement, next to the body of their deceased mother. It appeared that she had been run over by a bike tire 😭. Fearing the worst, their rescuer gently touched one of the littles, and it moved! She immediately called Greenwood, but unfortunately we were closed for the day. So she took them home and kept them in a warm, dark box overnight and called us first thing in the morning. Our Front Desk team advised her to bring them in. Their rescuer was so grateful that we cared enough to take in these tiny, five-week old orphans! Here at Greenwood, we care for critters of all sizes, from the smallest voles, to coyotes. If we are licensed for it, we will care for it with the goal of returning back into their natural habitat! Did you know there are eight species of vole in Colorado? The Meadow, Prairie, Mexican, Long-tailed, Sagebrush, Southern Red-backed, Western Heather, and Montane Vole species all can be found in the Centennial State. Looking much like a miniature muskrat, a meadow vole that was stepped on by mistake. He must have a skull fracture as he is quite neurologic- time will tell. With this kind of injury there is little we can do medically, but we can keep it well fed; give pain meds and electrolytes; and give it a quiet, predator free atmosphere. Eastern Medow Voles are often referred to as field mice or meadow mice; however, they are not the same thing and there is actually no such thing as a field mouse. This patient was brought in for being attacked by a dog but had no injuries. This vole is ready to roll! ✨ Last Friday, Wildlife Care Academy Coordinator, Kate Schmitt, and her helpful-citizen husband picked up a rehabilitated meadow vole deemed ready for release. They transported the meadow vole thirty-five miles back to its original home in Charlottesville, comfortably wrapped in a soft towel inside a small cardboard box (with air holes for easy breathing!). Though Kate was worried about leaving the little vole outside on a chilly and rainy morning, fabulous Front Desk Coordinator, Maliah Carroll, assured her it would soon burrow underground and be warm and safe to continue its wild life. . . . #wildliferehabilitation #successstory #meadowvole #vole #cute

Oh baby! Our mammal nursery welcomed 3 more infants this morning 💕🐭 A huge thank you to Patrick for calling us yesterday when these 3 young Meadow Voles were found disturbed from their nest and alone. Via our hotline we walked Patrick through how to safely reunite the babies with their mom but sadly she did not return. We always want to keep wild families together but are happy to step in when needed! Voles are difficult and time-consuming to rehabilitate as infants but our team has lots of experience and are ready to help these babies grow! They will move quickly through rehab and before you know it the voles will be nearly adult size and ready to return to the wild. No matter how big or small all wildlife deserve a helping hand when they need it most!
