I finished this book in less than a week! This book has everything that I like in a story. It has historical references, a beautiful description of the places where the story takes place, innocent romance, and strong characters that you love and hate. The story takes place in two North Carolina towns; Holden Beach and Matthews. During the years of 1935 and 1936. Leah became an orphan at the age of 14. She wants to stay in the little house where she grew up, but the state relocated her to a “prestigious” family. Soon she discovered that they wanted her as a maid and her life turned upside down. After many difficult situations, hidden family revelations, and going through a sterilization surgery that she never asked for, she finally finds a way to go back to the place and to the people where her heart belongs. #booklovers #bookreview #atlantabookclub #atlantabooklovers #atlantabookclubs #meganchurch #thelastcarolinagirl #thelastcarolinagirlbook #atlantabookshelves #eastcobbbookclub

The Girls We Sent Away By Megan Church It’s the 1960s and Lorraine Delford has it all – an upstanding family, a perfect boyfriend, and a white picket fence home in North Carolina. Yet every time she looks through her father’s telescope, she dreams of the stars. It’s ambitious, but Lorraine has always been exceptional.  But when this darling girl-next-door gets pregnant, she’s forced to learn firsthand the realities that keep women grounded.  To hide their daughter’s secret shame, the Delfords send Lorraine to a maternity home for wayward girls. But this is no safe haven – it’s a house with dark secrets and suffocating rules. And as Lorraine begins to piece together a new vision for her life, she must decide if she can fight against the powers that aim to take her child or submit to the rules of a society she once admired. 💭 What an emotional and moving story! Very different times in the 60’s and how young, pregnant girls were treated - still amazed that places like this existed. How girls were judged and shunned being told they had to be hidden away or else they would bring shame to their family and community. Lorraine was a beautiful, strong, young…. And when her parents found out she was pregnant they made her and the problem disappear. Nothing was done to prepare Lorraine for what was to be expected in the maternity home, child birth, or how it would feel to give up her baby. A beautifully written tragic story. The author did an amazing job of describing what life was like for these girls in the house. You will root for her during moments of strength, and feel every bit of Lorraine’s pain right through to the last twist at the end. Now I can’t wait to looking MC’s other book, The Last Carolina Girl! ❓ I’m starting the day at the gym - are you doing anything to jump start the weekend or taking it easy? #TheGirlsWeSentAway #MeganChurch #Sourcebooks #Netgalley #netgalleyreview #audiobook #netgalleyaudio #audiobookreview #bookrec #historicalfiction

THE GIRLS WE SENT AWAY by Megan Church⁣ NetGalley Review⁣ ⁣ Suburban America, 1960s: Lorraine Delford is eager to start her senior year of high school. She's set her sights on being the first female valedictorian in her school's history and is on track. She's a good girl who does good things and will go to a good school for a good life.⁣ Her college-age boyfriend unwittingly assists in ruining those plans. When Lorraine realizes she's pregnant, her boyfriend wants nothing to do with the situation if Lorraine plans to have the baby. Her parents came up with a solution common for the times - send her off to a maternity home and tell everyone she was off helping her aunt.⁣ When there, Lorraine finds that her dreams of continuing her education are in jeopardy. She also realizes that what happens to her baby may not be her choice.⁣ This novel of the "Baby Scoop" era (1945-1972). Millions of unwed mothers were sent away to maternity homes during this period, in shame, and coerced to give their babies up for adoption. In some cases, the girls were lied to and told that their baby didn't live. The book is so important for this generation to see what happens when women have no say in what happens to their bodies or their babies.⁣ ⁣ @Netgalley #NetGalley @Mchurchwriter #MeganChurch #TheGirlsWeSentAway #1960s #MaternityHomes #BabyScoop #NewFiction #MarchFiction #NewRelease #WomensIssues #Adoption #Bookstagram #IGBooks #librarian #BookReview #BookReviewer @Bookmarked

🏡BOOK REVIEW🏡 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 🥰Thank you so much to @bookmarked for the ARC! 📖Title: The Girls We Sent Away ✍️Author: Megan Church 📅Pub date: March 5, 2024 📚Genre: Historical fiction 🏡When I finished this story and was fighting back tears! 😭 I really felt connected to Lorraine, the main character. 🏡When Lorraine becomes pregnant in high school, her parents will stop at nothing to make sure their name and reputation are not blemished by their daughter. Set during the "baby scoop era" in the 1960's, this book opened my eyes to the horrible ways young girls and women were treated and the subsequent research I did broke my heart. 🏡This story was told with such heart and I really felt for Lorraine and as though I were walking her journey with her. 🏡I did wish for a little more at the end, but still think it was done well! I also think a lot of people will think this is a thriller/mystery based on the cover and title, so I want to be clear it's HISTORICAL FICTION 😂 🏡If you enjoyed ONLY THE BEAUTIFUL by Susan Meissner or THE FOUNDLING by Ann Leary, you may enjoy this one! ❓Do you think you can usually guess the genre by the book cover alone? Have you ever been mislead by a cover?

The Girls We Sent Away By: Meagan Church 5💛💛💛💛💛 After reading The Last Carolina girl, I knew I had to read more by this author. 💛 1960’s- Lorraine is in high school and looking forward to being valedictorian and college. She becomes pregnant and ends up being cut off by her boyfriend who is in college and does not want the child. 💛 Her mother sends her to a home of unwanted mothers, and this was extremely difficult for Lorraine. She finds a kindred spirit in someone who sees her potential. 💛 It’s amazing what Lorraine went through and how much she wants her baby. This story is full of love, heartbreak, hope and secrets. 💛 I highly recommend this novel. Book Review❗❗ 4/5 ⭐ Its 1935 and fourteen year old Leah is forced to live with another family after a tragic accident that left her without her father. Separated from everything a country girl knows, Leah was forced to be a helpmate to wealthy family that holds a secret. She endures emotional abuse by her new "foster mother", yet beloved by her new foster siblings. This book was tragic, heart wrenching, and tbe sad reality for many poor women in the south during a time when the eugenics board was just establishing itself. The author did an amazing job creating both likeable and unlikable characters. For those who enjoyed Where the Crawdads Sing, this has a similiar feel with the time period and setting. #carolina #historicalfiction #bookrecommendations #bookreview #audiobook #meganchurch #southern #booklover #readerlife #buckleup

Southern fiction… 😍 Leah lives in a small coastal town with her father, a local lumberjack. They lead a slow and simple life. Running through the forest and searching for seashells are the joys of Leah’s life…. Until an accident takes her fathers life and Leah is suddenly uprooted. She is forced into a home with complete strangers. As if that isn’t hard enough, she’s forced into becoming the helpmate for the lady of the house. Leah struggles to maintain her belief in who she is while seemingly being shamed for her inner wild child spirit. . . . #roushreads #southernfiction #d5reads365 #thelastcarolinagirl #meganchurch #2023books #girlswhoread #bookstagram #southerngirls
