👉🏼 Stored trauma is activated when you are triggered & subconsciously you see the present through lenses of the past. 🚨 You see danger where there might not be danger. For example, a song reminds you of someone who hurt you. You experience it happening in your body first & then thoughts start flooding in. ❤️🩹 This is because your nervous system becomes dis-regulated to protect you by entering into a fight/flight/freeze state. This then results in self-protective patterns and can lead to coping strategies. Your nervous system wants to protect you & it doesn’t know if the threat is a tiger chasing you or if you are going in for a job interview. Both of these threats FEEL the same in your body. To truly heal you must heal your body by regulating your nervous system so that you are not living in survival mode most of the time. 👉🏼 This causes havoc to your immune & digestive systems just to name a few things. You can’t tell your body to calm down you must show it through somatic exercises. This is why rocking a baby makes them feel safe & calm because you are helping them regulate their system. Many of us have trauma because our parents lived the majority of their lives in survival mode & they were unable to help us feel safe in our bodies. My portraits start with an ambiguous expression, shared gaze and uncertain context calculated to provoke you into creating the narrative. I suggest certain features and realistically detail others. I use a limited pallet of acrylic paint along with metallic and iridescent colors that produce changing patterns with changes in lighting and view angle. Sometimes I paint multi-views. Frequently I paint facial features slightly out of alignment. Other methods include the use of inconsistent line and shading cues, e.g., lines for one expression and shading for another and I frequently paint slightly different expressions from one side of the face to the other. This frequently results in an expression which causes the viewer to exclusively see one or the other expression at different times. These variations, along with time, half remembered memories, and your state-of-mind, might make my images appear more real. The original Cubists thought so. They also believed that time, the fourth dimension, could be incorporated in their work so as to cause the viewer to process and perceive their cubist work as more real. They said they painted successive appearances in to a single image reconstituted in time. I now see Cubism as a way of perceiving reality.
