Just bought a Dyson from John Lewis, which cost more money than seven grams of cocaine. I’m now sitting waiting for it to charge and the fact that I’m excited about this disgusts me, like I’m betraying my past, cheating on who I really am. I’m also checking weather apps looking for days that could potentially dry clothes. If anyone else in their forties has this disease then meet me tomorrow in Glasgow. We’re going back to 1998 💀 #relapseprevention #lackofgratitude

Have you ever sat with a client who was slipping back into old ways? There can be a lot of rationalizing of the disconnection as a lapse starts to happen. “It’s not that bad,” “this doesn’t hurt anyone else,” “I can handle it,” Etc. The fantasy & dance of dysregulation & disconnect from self has already begun. One often can’t always see it when they are in it bc dysregulation impacts how we process and store memory AND this self abandonment often becomes so normal. This needs to be met with great compassion and curiosity along with lots of TRUTH as a bridge back to recovery. Recovery requires planting into reality firmly, even when it gets uncomfortable. Reality sometimes makes you want to escape, but going back to whatever it was that harmed you will always bring the same result. Whether it’s your team, family, or friends— a trustworthy sounding board that can walk with you back onto the path can be the difference between a slip and a full blown relapse. #edrecovery #recovery #nostalgia #traumabonding #relapseprevention #addiction #addictionrecovery #nervoussystemregulation

The age-old debate: Is addiction a disease or a choice? As mental health experts and addiction professionals we've seen both sides of the argument. But here's the truth: it's not that simple. Addiction is a complex issue that can't be reduced to a simple label. While it's true that individuals make choices that can lead to addiction, it's also a fact that addiction can hijack the brain, making it difficult to make rational decisions. The truth is, addiction is a combination of both. It's a disease that affects the brain, but it's also influenced by personal choices and environmental factors. So, what does this mean for those struggling with addiction? It means that we need to approach addiction with compassion, understanding, and a holistic approach that addresses both the biological and psychological aspects of addiction. Let's break the stigma and start a conversation that focuses on healing and recovery, rather than blame and shame. In the context of bipolar disorder, the „calm phase“ usually refers to a period of relative stability known as the euthymic phase. During this phase, individuals with bipolar disorder do not experience the intense emotional highs of mania or the deep lows of depression. This period is characterized by a stable mood that falls within the normal range of emotions. It’s an important time for management and preventive care to maintain stability and prevent relapse into either mania or depression. Strategies during this phase often include regular therapy, medication adherence, maintaining a regular sleep schedule, and stress management techniques. It’s also an opportunity to reflect on personal triggers and develop strategies to cope with potential future episodes. For individuals with bipolar disorder, the calm or euthymic phase is not just a respite from mood swings but also a critical time for engaging in treatment and interventions that can help extend the duration of stability and improve overall quality of life. The euthymic phase in bipolar disorder is a stable period without extreme moods, crucial for maintaining treatment and preventing relapses. #EuthymicPhase #BipolarStability #MoodManagement #RelapsePrevention #MentalHealthAwareness

TW: ed talk I got a new tattoo today. Another Taylor Swift original. I have been kind of quiet here lately. Truth is, I’ve had so much to say, but every time I got ready to, I didn’t know what to keep in my head, and what was safe to let go of. Two weeks ago in therapy, I hit a very low point. After meeting with a new dietitian, who instructed me to tell my husband that I knew where the scale was and was actively using it. I decided to let my therapist in on the ordeal because I knew he’d be joining our session later that day. What I didn’t realize is, that I apparently never told her that I had found the scale and had been using it. The thing with being untruthful is you always get caught. She was hurt that I was working toward recovery in session but inadvertently squandering it outside of our time together. As my husband and therapist both fussed at me for the remaining of the session, I sat there and cried. I cried because I truthfully didn’t know where to go from here. How to make it right. I cried because I was untrustworthy and sneaky and deceitful and that wasn’t me. That isn’t me. And so that night as I laid next to my husband in bed, I wept. And this time I wept because I knew what I had to do. I reached out for help. I keep looking for a rock bottom moment that will lead to me ultimately getting help. But I am truly trying to believe that I am sick enough. I am sick enough to get help. And although I know this lapse has become a full on relapse, it’s still hard for me to comprehend that I am not well. But I also know that waiting for me to get to that point, could be waiting until it’s too late. Once school is over at the end of the month, I’ll be heading back to treatment. I feel so ashamed and undeserving. I just feel like I’m not sick enough. So until I fully believe it, I fully intend to fake it. I’ll fake it til I make it. I’ll fake it til it’s true. #recoveryjourney #recoveryblog #progressnotperfection #relapseprevention #fakeittillyoumakeit #edrecovery #edhelp #therapy #snowonthebeach #taylorswifttattoo #midnights

In today's episode, I discuss the intersection of neuroscience and recovery to explore how the brain subtly prepares for relapse long before we're aware of it. A psychological study about this unseen decision offers hope about recognizing early warning signals of our impending actions. I also discuss personal "red flags" that signal I'm headed down a bad road, emphasizing the importance of recognizing early indicators. By identifying behaviors such as increased isolation, neglecting personal care, and reverting to old, negative thought patterns, we can intervene before these signals spiral into more severe consequences. Moreover, this episode provides practical, proactive strategies to encourage mindfulness, including maintaining open communication with your support network, taking meditation breaks, and regularly revisiting coping strategies. I aim to empower us with the knowledge to understand and monitor our brain's subtle cues, enhancing our ability to maintain sobriety. No one understands what getting sober does to your mental…. When you been numbing your feelings for so long with your addiction… it steals your identity and everything you were and now your left with a stranger in your own skin, lost and broken and hopeless and know I will never be who I was again. Not having anything to numb these feelings with and feeling everything all at once which is extremely unbearable or to feeling absolutely nothing at all and feeling like a robot that is just on this earth existing and everything is what it is. Once you start shooting… it changes who you are as a person in ways you never thought imaginable… that shit ruins your existence. The worst part of this is knowing I am not me anymore and not knowing how to be me… (the mom I was, the bubbly me). I feel like a robot with “0” emotions and don’t know how to react to certain conversations, or I know I should feel some type of way and respond some type of way but that ability just isn’t there anymore. Losing your identity is torture in itself no one could understand. It especially sucks when you have people that don’t understand cuz they were never a addict and think when you get sober your just suppose to snap out and get right back to life but where am I suppose to go, I’ve lost my way and who I am that I don’t even know how to. And me expressing how I’m feeling, IS NOT me seeking pitty or attention, it ME trying to get YOU to really UNDERSTAND how I feel and what I’m going through. Sorry for the rant but I WANtED and NEEdED to bring awareness of the struggles of getting and staying sober that only a ADDICT would understand. Just know that you are not alone in you struggle and struggle everyday myself. Together We Stand!! What Is a Co-Occurring Disorder Treatment Program? Addiction is not just a physical reliance on substances—it’s a complicated condition that often intertwines with mental health conditions, creating a cycle that can be challenging to break without professional help. Failure to address this can lead to debilitating consequences, impacting an individual’s health, relationships, career, and overall quality of life. Therefore, obtaining appropriate addiction treatment becomes a matter of utmost importance. A co-occurring disorder treatment program is a specialized approach to addiction treatment that addresses substance use disorders (SUDs) and other mental health conditions simultaneously. This dual diagnosis treatment is essential because treating only one condition can often lead to relapses, as untreated mental health issues can fuel substance misuse. At Northpoint Nebraska, our co-occurring disorder treatment program includes medical intervention, drug and alcohol detox, rehab, and relapse prevention. We apply therapies such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), family therapy, and one-on-one counseling, all tailored to address the individual’s unique needs. https://www.northpointnebraska.com/addiction-rehab-blog/common-co-occurring-disorder-symptoms/ #CoOccurringDisorder #AddictionTreatment #MentalHealthMatters #RehabilitationProgram #SubstanceAbuseRecovery #CBTTherapy #RelapsePrevention #NorthpointNebraska #HolisticTreatment #DualDiagnosis

The benefits of having an addiction coach/consultant who has personally experienced and overcome addiction are invaluable. They have an unparalleled level of understanding, empathy, and lived experience they bring to the relationship. Accountability and Support: A good addiction coach or consultant can provide a structured and supportive environment for individuals struggling with addiction. They can hold clients accountable for their actions and progress, offering guidance and encouragement throughout the recovery process. This personalized support system can be crucial in helping individuals stay committed to their recovery goals. Tailored Recovery Plans: An addiction coach or consultant can help create a recovery plan that is customized to the individual’s needs and circumstances. This plan may involve identifying triggers, developing coping strategies, and setting realistic goals for sobriety. By tailoring the approach to the individual, the coach can help maximize the chances of successful recovery. Insight and Expertise: A good addiction coach or consultant brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the table. They can provide valuable insights into the nature of addiction and offer practical advice on how to overcome it. This expertise can be invaluable for those who are just starting their recovery journey and may feel overwhelmed or unsure of how to proceed. Holistic Approach: A well-rounded addiction coach or consultant will take a holistic approach to recovery, addressing not just the physical aspects of addiction, but also the emotional, psychological, and social factors that may be contributing to the problem. By helping individuals develop a healthier lifestyle and addressing underlying issues, a good coach can help pave the way for long-term recovery and overall well-being. #triggers #relapseprevention #stigma #neverquit #dontgiveup #onedayatatime #addictionawareness #addictionsupport #togetherwecan #recovery #sobriety #wellness #support #education #addiction #lovingyouradfict #shiftcollective #shiftlabs
