💕I love this. 💕 It highlights the importance of self care. Self care is about taking time for yourself, to do something you enjoy or be in a place that you find relaxing or around people who love and support you. AND self care is learning how to say no, putting boundaries in place and realising when to step away from people, places or things that no longer add value to (or negatively influence) your life. 💕OT is such a serving profession, I hope you all are taking care of yourselves so that you can keep on giving, serving & loving #occupationaltherapy #ot #loveot #mentalhealthawareness #mental #mentalhealth #mentalwellness #servingprofessionals #otandmentalhealth #growthmindset #learn #mentalhealthrecovery #mentalhealthquotes #quotes #otquotes

Play is essential for a child’s health, wellbeing and learning. Through play we can learn social skills, flexible thinking, problem solving, regulation skills, and physical fine and gross motor strength. Not to mention it can support a child’s curiosity, build their confidence and understanding of the world! 🌍 Sometimes all that is needed is a cardboard box, some glue and paint to get your child started! 🤍🤍 #occupationaltherapy #craftykids #therapy #otandmentalhealth #otandme #therapist

The 5th Annual OT in Mental Health Symposium will be held on virtually on SUNDAY, July 10, 2022. Earn 5.5 PDU's All sessions will be recorded to re-watch the sessions at your convenience until August 31, 2022. 🌟 Session: Attachment, Trauma, and Mental Illness: Intersections and Implications at the Micro, Meso, and Macro Levels presented by: Carol Lambdin-Pattavina, OTD, OTR/L Despite a growing body of evidence that is 50 years in the making, little space is afforded dialogue about and exploration of the intersections between attachment, complex trauma, and illnesses that often bear psychiatric labels in the medically oriented psychiatric community that continues to dominate mental health are. Carol Lambdin-Pattavina, OTD, OTR/L, is an assistant professor in the Department of Occupational Therapy at the University of New England and has been a licensed occupational therapy practitioner for over 22 years. Her area of expertise includes adolescent and adult mental health and wellness, focusing on the lasting impact of complex trauma. Lambdin-Pattavina has specialized in working with individuals in the community and supporting service users to craft a life of their design through occupation. She has spearheaded the development of several community-based programs including: a supported employment program for community-dwelling adults, a computer training program for those with chronic mental health challenges, and a sensory-based program for adolescents from hard places who have experienced complex and acute trauma. Mental health is an essential component of all occupational therapy interventions. Occupational therapists provide mental health treatment and prevention services for all – children, youth, the aged, and people with severe and persistent mental illness. All interventions focus on improving each client’s function and independence. Occupational therapists work in mental health settings and they focus on enabling persons to re-engage in useful occupations. How do they do this? They help each client build a variety of skill sets, establish good habits and routines, set therapy goals, apply cognitive-behavioral techniques (CBT), and understand and counter physiological influences. -https://www.movingwithhope.org/posts/occupational-therapists-and-mental-health-interventions/ #ot #otandmentalhealth #briarcliffuniversity #bcu #thecliff #otd

OT Month: ABCs of OT . 'F' is for Fight or Flight: . Many kids with anxiety and sensory processing disorder, i.e. hyper-responsiveness are in a constant state of fight-or-flight. . Fight-or -flight occurs when a child's sympathetic nervous system is activated by perceiving something that is either threatening to the body or stressful. . As occupational therapy practitioners we often work with children by teaching them strategies to help them improve their ability to manage and cope with what they perceive as stressful, as well as to improve their overall sensory processing, modulation, and regulation. When the body is calm and regulated, it is in a ready state to learn and play, which then allows them to be able to participate in activities that are meaningful and enjoyable to them! . . #OT #ABCsofOT #OTMonth #supportpatients #IOTA #OccupationBased #oteducation #PromoteOTsValue #occupationaltherapy #OT #idaho #neuroOT #occupationaltherapist #cota #newgradot #boise #idahooccupationaltherapy #therapy #promoteot #captureot #idahoot #supportot #occupationaltherapyassistant #idahoot #rehabot #rehab #idahooccupationaltherapy #anxiety #spd #sensoryprocessingdisorder #fightorflight #mentalhealth #otandmentalhealth

The following evidence-based approaches support the profession of occupational therapy within this child and adolescent mental health setting. These evidence-based approaches include: Providing education on coping skills and self-regulation skills to use in a variety of contexts Providing education on sensory exploration and implementation of sensory approaches for self-regulation Incorporating yoga and movement interventions to provide sensory input and achieve self-regulation Utilizing CBT approaches to facilitate participation in desired activities Identifying and implementing healthy, positive habits and structure into daily routines Providing education and implementation of skills related to social competence, such as making and keeping friends, coping with anger, solving problems, learning about social etiquette, and following school rules Evaluating factors interfering with success in school, home, community, etc. Modifying the environment to support improved attention, participation and decrease sensory overload in the classroom Providing parents with education on behavioral and psychosocial approaches to enhance the child’s daily functioning Reducing restraints and seclusions in the inpatient setting by conducting comprehensive assessments to determine facilitators and barriers to participation in life tasks, promoting the use of self-awareness and skills development, collaborating with the client to develop attainable goals, modifying the environment for optimal fit, promoting use of self-regulation and sensory strategies, and educating the interdisciplinary team on prevention techniques. Overall, it is clear that occupational therapists have the distinct knowledge and skill sets to provide effective, holistic interventions within the mental health setting. I’ve addressed many physical concerns with winter but I have yet to bring up one large piece of staying safe in winter. Staying mentally and emotionally safe. In the winter months, many of us experience a decrease in available hobbies/pastimes. (I recognize some people have winter specific hobbies and that’s awesome! Not knocking those!) However, for many, especially if the winter months are more difficult for accessibility, there may be a decrease in outdoor hobbies, decrease in ability to exercise, and simply a decrease in sunshine or breeze through an open window. Some people may receive an actual diagnosis of Seasonal Affective Disorder while some do not but still struggle in winter. For others already struggling with depression or anxiety, seasonal affective disorder is one added layer. Occupational therapy can be one piece of the puzzle for mental health; however, please also seek professional help from a licensed medical health care provider in order to seek appropriate diagnosis, treatment, therapy, and/or medication. And of course, please seek emergency services if you or a loved one are experiencing thoughts of self harm. But how can OT help? Occupational Therapists are professionals in the world of “occupations”, the activities you do that bring meaning to life for you. As mentioned, winter for many can limit the safe accessibility of your day to day activities. An OT can help you address your concerns, work with you to modify activities, and assist in exploration of other avenues to fulfill meaningful day to day activities. Being healthy, safe, and happy is not just physical, but also mental and emotional.

What does this mean? * We're trained to handle mental health needs as it relates to engagement in daily activities. * I work closely with victims of trauma, people with varying diagnoses; depression, anxiety, OCD, the foster care population, and many more. * No I cannot prescribe you medication for this. (Go to a psychiatrist for that) * BUT if you want someone who considers all areas of you life and wants to DO something with you about it, OTs are the go to. Sometimes talking helps but sometimes you have to work through mental stresses with physical real life activities, and that's where OTs come in! * #mentalhealthmatters #mentalhealthawareness #otandmentalhealth #fostercareawareness #traumainformed #depressionservices #healbydoing
