But here's the truth: We have far more control over our health destiny than we often believe. By understanding and honoring our bodies' natural rhythms, fueling ourselves adequately, and prioritizing rest and recovery, we can reclaim our vitality and resilience. Hypothalamic amenorrhea and other health issues that can stem from this (tissue injuries, insufficiency fractures, osteoporosis, etc) may seem insurmountable, but they are not a life sentence. They are signals from our bodies that something is amiss – and with the right support and guidance, we can overcome them. So let's shift the narrative. Between studying for back-to-back board exams, working on residency applications, travelling and completing electives, it suffices to say that I have not been eating the best over the last few months. All this time, I had managed to push all the weight-gain thoughts out of my mind, because ignorance is bliss, right? Why is the thought of putting on weight so fear inducing? I was listening to an episode of Glennan Doyle’s podcast, We Can Do Hard Things, where she talks about how our world’s impossible beauty standards have caged women. Women are constantly inundated with what beauty should like. It affects our self talk, our thoughts and body image, our relationship with ourselves and others. We are raised in a society where all things natural are generally thought to be repulsive: Body hair? (yuck). Wrinkles? (inject that ASAP). Tummy rolls? (how could you let yourself go). Ah, the knockout blow of “letting yourself go”. Glennan discusses this concept in the same episode. As if the worst thing a woman could possibly do is not live up to the preordained beauty standard! These beauty ideals are etched so deeply that it takes conscious effort and discomfort to deprogram them. I may have gained some weight over the last few months, but I have also gained such incredible insight and experiences in the same amount of time. I have felt genuinely proud of myself, gratified and fulfilled in the work I was doing. I felt mentally strong. And emotionally well. Some food for thoughts 💭 I work with every single one of my clients on body image, I make sure that whilst they may be pursuing an aesthetic goal such as fat loss that it doesn’t come at the detriment of their body image and relationship with food, I do this because 99% of the females I work with struggle with their body image & how they speak to theirselves. I know I’m pregnant, I know I’m lucky to be pregnant, But I also know you can be grateful to be pregnant but struggle to see your body change (which many women do struggle with), & if I still struggled with my body image and my relationship with food like I used to that this wouldn’t have been as smooth a journey for me, I can fully accept all the seasons my body will go through, Yes there will be times I don’t feel great - that’s a normal healthy body image, being able to accept your flaws and all. Poor body image is so commonly accepted, But it’s not healthy to feel that way, It also suck the life out of you & makes it harder to accept when your body does change because life just happens, We age > we might have babies > we might just be going through a hard time, Those seasons are made harder if we struggle with how we view our bodies. A well-rounded plan should include: 💜Pelvic floor and core awareness- Education on how your core and pelvic floor system works and how it changes during and after pregnancy, plus what to do if pelvic floor symptoms arise or you have prolapse or diastasis recti. 💜Mobility- Stretching is talked about A LOT, but we don’t give enough credit to mobility. As your body changes, your muscles also change. These changes may come with tightness in certain areas, weaknesses in others. Mobility exercises for your pelvis, back, and inner thighs. 💜Strength- Strength is a game changer for my clients. Most often they only find temporary relief with stretching and mobility alone. The strength piece is really needed to better support the pelvis, keep your core working well, and reduce common aches and pains associated with mom life. 💜Building on the basics- The magic is in building on the basics foundational movements like squats, upper body pulling and pushing strength, carrying things, deadlifts, and adding in accessory exercises as needed. A lot of it is repeating the same movements over again in different ways. This may seem boring, but it’s effective. These are the exact 4 pillars I use in my programs to help my clients reduce back pain, strengthen their pelvic floor to improve pelvic pain and prolapse symptoms, and feel strong and powerful again. What I find with people who have chronic back pain is that 1 or more of these pillars is missing from what they’re doing. Years ago I was working as a hairstylist and I had lost significant weight in a short period of time. Helloooo extreme dieting. I would see multiple clients a day and without fail almost every person who walked through my door would comment on my shrinking body. Part of me loved the compliments, in all honesty I felt I had earned them. I worked hard to drop the weight. I sacrificed A LOT, literally starved myself, and exercised like it was my full time job. I weighed myself daily and obsessively checked my body looking for constant validation. And as much as I loved how I looked, I was haunted daily with the pressure to not gain the weight back. I know my clients meant well with their compliments. Yet overtime all I could think was, If I don’t keep this up everyone’s going to think I look terrible again. That mindset caused me to obsess over what I ate, how often I worked out, and how I looked on a minute by minute basis. I was living in an invisible prison of self objectification, seeing myself split in two: the one living my life, and the one watching and judging myself. Over time I’ve been able to set myself free, learning to see myself as a whole and not a body first. Diet culture will lead you to believe differently, but know that you are more than a body. Regardless of how you look, or how you think you look, you can feel good about yourself because you are not your appearance. How do I feel about my body? This is something I sometimes get asked as a dietitian and the answer is.....complicated. My body has changed and continues to change; while I can try to eat well and exercise, my body continues to age and I know that aging is natural and normal. I also know that after having two kids, my body is forever different from how it was pre-kids. My body has been bigger and at other times smaller. I make a decision every day not to focus on what my body looks like, but to instead focus on everything that my body does for me; the way it enables me to move, breathe, feel, smell, taste.... for the two kids it created. I tell my body I love it and I choose to enjoy it today and in the future. If you are on a journey with how you feel about your body, know that you are not alone and that, at times, the journey can be a hard one. Even though we can't avoid ageing, we try very hard. This idea of "more pain more gain" has been around for a long time and it has created a sense of desperation to achieve a certain standard of beauty as fast as possible. The problem with this idea is that women are hurting themselves and making choices that are out of integrity in order to meet societal and family pressures. This could look like over exercising, dieting and deprivation, doing invasive treatments or surgeries, and internally beating ourselves up. These choices are making us unhealthy, dysmorphic, and only taking us further away from self-acceptance. Beauty doesn't have to hurt and we don't have to abandon ourselves. Werden diverse Körper auch in der Öffentlichkeit immer sichtbarer und erhalten mehr Raum, bringt das Konzept aber auch Probleme mit sich: Die Erwartung, seinem Körper immer und bedingungslos positiv gegenüberzustehen, ist für viele unrealistisch. Was ist, wenn ich meinen Körper einfach nur okay finde bzw. einfach akzeptiere, dass er da ist, ohne ihn zu idealisieren? ⁠ ⁠ Hier setzt das Konzept der Body Neutrality an – eine neue Perspektive, frei von Druck und Ansprüchen an den eigenen Körper und vor allem dem Gefühl ihm gegenüber.
