Another exciting procedure this week. Well…… The time has come to have a little pause. Not quite a goodbye (I don’t think) but a definite pause in my clinical 1:1 work. The last 18 months of my personal life has been intense. Working as a Physio, self employed and in Women’s health is full on. So after 22 years in physio, the last 14 in private practice I am taking a much needed break from this work. To my wonderful clients thank you for letting me hold that space for you and help you in your journeys. To my colleagues thank you for your continued support. I had a new lady start my Pilates class this week. When I looked at her medical questionnaire she had a prolapse listed. But when I asked her for more details she had been given a smear test and told by the medical professional doing the procedure that she had a mild prolapse. As a trainer specialising in pelvic health I can now help her to manage her Pilates exercises so she isn’t putting too much pressure down on to her prolapse. She will know what to be aware of and what to avoid. I do worry that when we have a smear and a prolapse is diagnosed that there is no help or offer to get a more detailed diagnosis. What has prolapsed? What grade is the prolapse? But also a discussion about symptoms and things that can make it worse or more importantly can help improve your symptoms. How can you help to manage your pelvic health without that information? If you need help with a diagnosis or have symptoms that you are unsure of and would like to discuss things further do talk to your GP or we are happy to guide you although we cannot give you an official diagnosis. Pelvic pain is any pain in the back, SI joints or pelvic girdle (PGP/SPD). Pain is never normal and should not be accepted as your new normal! I remember dealing with it for over 1.5 years after I had my son. It was frustrating, maddening and...painful!! It doesn't have to be that way! After healing it and going through 2 more full term pregnancies, I finally did feel normal and like myself again. This could be you, too. This tells your muscles to tense up," Arizona-based physical therapist who specializes in the pelvic floor Nina Lee explains. "If trauma is not dealt with, storing tension in your pelvic floor and hips can be a chronic occurrence." "Your pelvis and hips are the center point for your limbs and trunk to work off of," Lee explains, noting that major muscles and tendons attach and cross the pelvis area. "In a fight or flight situation, your muscles respond by tensing up. Why I view chronic pelvic pain like an iceberg (or all chronic pain for that matter) It's a concept I use with my patients The bit you can see represents the physical aspect of pain. That is the bits that hurt if you press them, or how your body reponds negatively to a stimulus like stretch or pressure. Or it could be the way you think about endometrial tissue, or a scar, or how your bladder hurts when it's full. It's all important and relevant but it isn't the full picture. The under-water part of the iceberg is the concept that I try to explore in time. That is the non-so-obvious things like the way your brain deals with chronic pain, your sympathetic nervous system, your gut microbiome and your thoughts and worries around the pain. Pain science is complicated! But there are some great resources out there and there is usually something that someone will read or listen to that resonates with them that makes a difference. My self care days look different depending on my needs. Today I’m focusing on getting in touch with what I feel in my body… and doing a little adulting ha. I’m REALLY good at intellectualizing my feelings and struggles, meaning, I can talk about them all day and can logically think of solutions to help me feel better. BUT… I’m terrible at feeling them in my body. And we need to be able to feel our needs and emotions just as much as we need to intellectualize them. This entity wouldn’t exist without moms! Happy Mother’s Day to: My mama who is an inspiration to me and so many other people with how she handles life and isn’t afraid to continue growing. I love you! My mother in law who has been through a lot and still believes in love and joy. We are here for you! The mothers in my ancestry that have come before me. Your lives and experiences have literally shaped who I am. The ones who have younger kiddos, who despite how little our society helps mothers, is able to be provide for their children emotionally, physically, and spiritually. You are rock stars! The ones who have older kiddos and are trying to navigate how their role as a mother changes when children start to have more autonomy. You are doing great! The ones who are trying to have kiddos but are struggling with infertility and infant loss. Your courage and strength to continue despite the trauma is inspiring. The ones who are part of the LGBTQIA+ community. You deserve safety and peace. The ones who have lost their mothers and are navigating this crazy world without the comfort of a hug from mom. Keep living the life you want to honor your mother. The ones who are estranged from their mothers, you don’t have to justify your decisions. May is Pelvic Pain Awareness Month! 💜 Pelvic pain affects millions of people worldwide, regardless of age or gender although generally, women are affected more frequently than men (1 in 6 women to 1 in 10 men). Here are some explanations of medical terms: 👉Endometriosis is a condition whereby tissue similar to the lining of the uterus (called the endometrium) grows outside of the uterus and can adhere to the bladder, bowel and other structures. It affects lots of women and can (but doesn't inevitably) cause pain 👉Dyspareunia is the term for pain during or after intercourse and can be a symptom of a number of different pelvic issues (including hormonal changes, endometriosis, fibroids, infections, skin conditions, surgery, pelvic floor dysfunction and chronic pelvic pain) 👉Intersititial cystitis or bladder pain sydrome is pain or discomfort in the bladder (without an identifiable cause) which is usually made worse by bladder filling. It can also cause urinary frequency and urgency 👉Adenomyosis is a condition where the tissue that normally lines the inside of the uterus grows into the wall of the uterus, causing it to thicken. The condition can result in an enlarged uterus and can cause heavy, painful periods and cramping 👉Vulvodynia & vestibulodynia describe symptoms of burning, stinging, pain or a feeling of 'rawness' in the vulval region and inside the vagina. The pain can be constant or intermittent 👉Chronic prostatitis or UCPPS in men (Urological Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome) can give rise to pain in the bladder, genitals and lower abdomen. It sometimes has an identifiable cause, such as an infection, but not always. The muscles in our body work in slings, meaning the muscles in our feet connect all the way up into our head. Incidentally, if we have limited mobility in our ankles then we can have limited mobility in our hips and spine! The cool part is that we can gain mobility in SO MANY ways! A couple months ago I asked what everyone was reading. At the time I was reading Why We Sleep. So I want to know… What’s in your hands now?!? Right now I’m reading Why Zebras Don’t Get Ulcers by Robert Sapolsky. This book has been on my shelf for literally YEARS and I’m finally able to read it! It’s all about how stress, both quick and long term, affects our physiology and overall health. As a heads up, it is DENSE, and I need extra time to re-read sections to make sure I understand the concepts. What I love about this book is that it talks about how stress can be helpful in the short term. Short term stress teaches our body and the autonomic nervous system how to adapt which builds resiliency in the long run. But Chronic, long term stress is when our body and autonomic nervous just can’t keep up. This is where unfortunately, the majority of us live our life, which can increase risk of chronic disease such as depression, diabetes, and heart disease.
