Isla Magdalena - this tiny island in the Strait of Magellan is home to ~120k penguins 🐧🐧 and a big nesting site. February is believed to be the best time to visit the island but the trips are organized between November and March. It's about two hours away from Punta Arenas and the only way to get there is by boat. There are various agencies organizing this tour (such as Solo Expeditios), some of them include Martha Island as well - you can't get off the boat, but you can observe some colonies of sea lions & cormorants there. Magdalena Island is one of the few places where you can see Magellanic penguins in their natural habitat. They might cross your path just roaming around but it's forbidden to touch, feed or play with them (they're still wild creatures, not pets so no matter how cute they might seem, we have to stay away 😭). A nesting Gentoo penguin pair As can be seen here the nest isn’t really much of a traditional nest. It is just really a fortress of rocks lined with feathers. This is as much as the bare landscape of Antarctica allows. They are very fierce in defending the stones in their nest from neighbor penguins in the colony during breeding season. Pleneau Island -- Thu Feb 3rd -- Part 1 According to my trip journal, "today was a very lazy day for me". There's only one major landing for the day and it's at Pleneau Island to see another gentoo penguin colony. We're still heading back north through the Lemaire channel area and running into a lot of floating ice. I slowly pushed myself out of my bunk and look at my phone. Crap! It's later than I thought and I rush through breakfast so I can get dressed in time to head out with the others on the zodiacs. I make it in time, but internally, I still feel sluggish and honestly meh about everything right now. However, I refuse to miss a landing or an off ship event, so I get ready to go. We get to the island and I spend a couple hours hanging out with the penguins and taking even more photos of them. This landing is supposed to last around four hours, but I'm ready to head back to the ship after a couple hours have passed. A couple of crewmates also are ready to leave early and we all return to the ship. I'm not feeling sick, but I definitely feel worn out. As an introvert, I try my best to manage and balance out my energy levels, but today I just can't seem to get the mixture right. At home, I often meditate to recharge my batteries, but I'm finding it's difficult to meditate on the ship and properly "recharge" my internal batteries. I end up taking a nap until dinner time. When I wake I feel better. :)

I film one penguin stealing rocks from another's nest, and taking the rocks back to it's own nest. 😂 After awhile, I head back down to the rocky beach with the crystal clear water. Some of my fellow crew mates are trying to film the penguins swimming underwater, and I try again as well. Penguins are definitely slow and clumsy on land, but they are soooo fast in the water. They're little black and white rockets and it's hard to keep up with them swimming and zipping around. I tried my best, though, and got a few video clips that I liked. 😂 Then on the way back to the ship, we took a mini zodiac tour around some icebergs. There were some really neat formations!

Cuverville Island -- Tue Feb 1st -- Part 1 Today is a very busy day and we have one last landing after dinner. We are heading to Cuverville Island to look at penguins and explore the beach. When we get there, I notice two things immediately. One, there are a lot of penguins coming in/out of the water and swimming. Two, the water is crystal clear. At first, I try to film some of the penguins as they swim under water, but honestly there's too many people around. We're getting in the penguins' way and they're getting in ours. I decide to explore the colony that is on the rocks ahead for awhile instead. Earlier in the day, Ben, the official trip photographer, presented a class on beginner photography. I switch my camera out of auto mode and into semi-manual mode. I try to remember his tips about studying an animal or area for a little while (5-10 min or so) while taking photos. I noticed a couple of penguins stealing rocks from each other's nest. I have some nice photos sets of them stealing the rock, carrying it away, and putting it on their own nest. 😃 I also have some more photos of baby penguins and a penguin parent sitting on an egg. 🙂 After awhile, I head back down to the rocky beach with the crystal clear water. D’Hainaut Island at Mikkelsen Harbour -- Mon Jan 31st -- part 2 There's a huge Gentoo penguin colony all around the orange emergency shelter, with small baby penguins and some adult penguins are probably laying on eggs. The hut is behind them, and we don't want to disturb the penguins by getting too close. After taking lots of pictures of baby penguins, I continue my search for sea creatures along the shore. I don't find any sea stars, but I do find krill and snails. 🙂 It was nice to walk around and explore. 1. I take a lot of pictures of this baby penguin with it's parent 2. Vid of the baby penguin standing up with parent 3. Baby penguin is laying down 4. Vid of parent moving some sticks on the nest as baby penguin lays down 5. Baby penguin laying down, playing with a stick. Part of it is in it's mouth 6. There are nests everywhere in the penguin colony. A different penguin is standing in front of the penguin pair I've been taking pics of. 7. Different baby penguin and parent. Took a photo of them turned away from me. So fluffy. You can also see the density of how many nests are in the area. There's at least four rock nests in this picture alone. 8. One of my favorite penguin pics. This one is walking through a snow melt puddle, amongst whale bones. Kind of like that I caught the little splash it's making with it's feet. 9. Now I'm exploring the shore. It's littered with chunks of misshapen sea ice. It was neat to catch the penguin walking among the pieces. 10. A different penguin walking past the sea ice chunks to go hunting/swimming.
D’Hainaut Island at Mikkelsen Harbour -- Mon Jan 31st -- part 1 After lunch we head to our second landing of the day. We end up at D'Hainaut Island. It's a small island that has a large gentoo penguin colony on it and an orange emergency hut. These emergency huts are sprinkled about the peninsula. They are brightly colored so they stick out against the white, gray, and black landscape of Antarctica. The huts are only used in emergencies, such as where a ship has wrecked, a landing crew has gotten stranded due to weather, etc, or possibly for medical emergencies. As a result, since we're all in perfect health and definitely not in distress, we're not allowed to go inside. Plus, there's a huge Gentoo penguin colony all around it with small baby penguins and some adult penguins are probably laying on eggs. The hut is behind them, and we don't want to disturb the penguins by getting too close. 1. Orange emergency hut surrounded by a Gentoo penguin colony 2. 🐧Fun Fact Friday 🐧 Penguins nest underground in burrows! It's only the males that dig these burrows and it can take them 2-3 weeks of returning at night to excavate their homes. The females then choose their man based on his nest building (and house decorating) abilities. The burrows are shaped like an inside down igloo with a narrow entrance and a large area inside. They are approximately 60-70cm deep. Many years ago when I was in the Merchant Navy I was stationed out in the Falkland Islands and there was a ships photographer with us for a short period of time. . He took some amazing photographs, and this was one of them. I can't remember his name but he was so talented, this is one of his many amazing shots. . If you ever want to experience penguins in the wild then the Falklands is the place to go. I remember some of my crew-mates took me for a walk along Bertha's Beach to where the penguin's nest. . They were so tame and when I sat down near their nest to observe them all the little baby ones came over to play. They had no fear of humans, as the inhabitants of the islands just let them get on with it. . When walking back from their nest along the beach some of the older ones came along and played in the surf as we walked along. Had it not been the height of winter and snowing madly I may have kicked off my shoes and joined them but it was freezing ❄ .
