Photography Pennie Smith Levi’s jeans gave The Clash their only number one (Swipe left for more) For a short while, The Clash were the most political and purposeful punk band around. Then, for a lot longer, the group were considered “the only band that matters.” Ever since, The Clash have been lauded as the icons of punk rock and purveyors of social justice. But none of that necessarily means the band were commercially successful. London Calling sold in good numbers, but they never quite reached the top of the charts. In fact, the highest chart position was number two in the Swedish album charts, only reaching number nine in the UK. ‘Should I Stay Or Should I Go’, released in 1982 when the whole world knew who The Clash were, struggled and peaked at 17 in the UK and 13 in the US. That was until Levi’s jeans came a-knocking. But how do a band with such deeply held beliefs on the commercialisation of art end up giving away one of their most beloved songs? The answer: to promote new music and after all it was Levis. Simonon explained in a 2011 interview that he smashed the bass out of frustration when he learned that the audience were not allowed to stand up out of their seats. Pennie Smith, who photographed the band for the album, originally did not want the photo to be used. She thought that it was too out of focus, but Strummer and graphic designer Ray Lowry thought it would make a good album cover. And sure it did! 1150/C is for: Combat Rock – THE CLASH – 1982. “Combat Rock” is the fifth and final Clash album with the original line-up (I never cared to listen to 1985’s “Cut The Crap” which is more of a Joe Strummer solo album). Just like “Sandinista!”, “Combat Rock” was criticized a lot because it’s very musically opened; you have Rock and a bit of Punk, of course, but also Pop, Funk, Reggae, Dub, New Wave, whatever vibes; and that wasn’t to everybody’s taste. Me, I like it. There are no bad songs on “Combat Rock” as far as I’m concerned. I like the hits I grew up with (“Should I Stay Or Should I Go” and “Rock The Casbah”) and I also like the darker and quieter songs like “Straight To Hell” or “Death Is A Star”. It ain’t no Punk anymore for sure, but it’s a very cool record. Too bad it was the last one. Topper Headon was fired after the recording because of his severe heroin addiction and Mick Jones left because his mates decided against his will to reintegrate original manager Bernie Rhodes. End of the (fantastic) story. Did you know that the iconic cover was once again a shot by Pennie Smith? (the photographer who took the famous picture of Simonon smashing his bass on stage, the one that made “London Calling”) This time, the photo was taken in Bangkok, Thailand. This album reflects the band's growing interest in styles beyond their punk roots, including reggae, rockabilly, ska, rock 'n' roll, New Orleans R&B, pop, lounge jazz, and hard rock. Lyrical themes include social displacement, unemployment, racial conflict, drug use, and the responsibilities of adulthood. This is my joint favourite Clash album.
