Saving lives one pint at a time ❤️ I’ve been wanting to donate blood for YEARS now, but I’ve watched people in high school pass out right in front of me & heard horror stories from those who have donated and it scared me way too much. I got an email through work last month about donating blood and felt a tug in my heart to click on the link. I looked at the days and found one where I didn’t have classes, clinical, or I wasn’t working. It seemed like any other time I wanted to donate I was working or had classes. So I felt that this was a sign. I signed up with a little bit of fear, but ended up walking out with an overwhelming feeling. Being able to help and give back to those who desperately need it is what I love doing! ❤️ I am going to be a nurse and this is how I know I am in the right field. I love being able to help those who need it the most & I did just that this evening! I finally donated blood for my first time!! It may not seem like much, but it is to me. I’ve been wanting to donate to help save lives for years, but let the fear from others opinions/experiences hold me back. I made sure I prepped for this well. I ate foods they recommended, I was well hydrated & overall ready for this. If you feel a tug in your heart to jump in and do something... DO IT. No matter how scary or fearful you may be, do it. Don’t let others hold you back or stop you from doing whatever it is you feel is calling you. Blood Donation! I wanted to share my rather dramatic experience and hopefully inspire some of you to donate too! It’s also a reminder about listening to your body and knowing your limits.... Firstly, I have to thank the staff there, they were all fantastic, very attentive and kind. It felt super safe, with masks in place as well as social distancing. I’d had texts leading up to the day about what to expect as well so I felt prepared. However, as I had fainted after donation before and felt lightheaded after every donation, I was pulled into the little side bit to have a conversation. Basically the head Nurse told me it might be unsafe for me to donate. We came to the compromise that I could go ahead, but at any time if I felt unwell then I would be withdrawn. I managed to give my whole pint with no trouble whatsoever, feeling rather smug I sat down with my juice and biscuits, however, halfway through a bourbon it happened, the dizziness, nausea, lightheaded happened again. I had to be put back in the fun tilting chair, tilted all the way back. Whilst I felt rather silly, the staff were super empathetic and kind, the head nurse came over to me and explained that we have to listen to my body, that whilst I may be able to give blood in the future, I couldn’t do it for at least the next few years. I was upset, but totally understood. She was right, I have to listen to my body and it seems that right now losing a pint just isn’t what it can do. I shall try again in future, but in the meantime I encourage anyone who can to please donate!! I am at least grateful that I was able to give a full donation. But if you can’t - don’t push it, and find other ways to help, by sharing on social media or talking about it with friends and family ❤️ Afterwards, I fainted in the car on the way home, spent the evening recovering (with some Maccy D chips!) and this morning I’m feeling back to my normal self! Big thanks to my Boyf who was completely supportive and is just grateful I didn’t throw up in his car...
