Day 5: Great Art Collections of Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington - first stop in Washington DC was the wonderful Freer Gallery of Asian Art with dazzling objects such as this mosque lamp and Whistler’s extraordinary Peacock Room, originally created for his Liverpool patron, Frederick Leyland. Then a short walk to the @hirshhorn to see the exhibition ‘Revolutions - art from the Hirshhorn 1860-1960’ with works by 126 different artists from their rich collection including Barbara Hepworth and Georgia O’Keeffe. A quick stop at the historic Renwick Gallery to see the work of @janetechelman and @chihulystudio and others before ending our day with Picasso’s portrait of Gertrude Stein @americanart in the exhibition ‘Brilliant exiles: American Women in Paris 1900-1939’. We certainly earned our delicious dinner @thesmithrestaurant well chosen by @rome_away_from_home. 05/04/24 🌬️📿🪶🦟 Never Whistle at Night by various authors This month we took a deep dive into indigenous anthology with “Never Whistle at Night.” The group has enjoyed the writing of Stephen Graham Jones and Tommy Orange so having their short stories included was quite a treat. The group rated the book as an overall 3.5/5 and wished that the stories had been grouped together by theme. Each story was something completely unexpected, with twists and turns that lent themselves to a nice discussion about the authors’ intended interpretations #renwickgallery #indigenouswriters #coverart

Bags like this were especially useful for seasonal moves to river fishing camps, root-gathering fields, and winter villages. Women created these bags from the peeled, cured, and hand-spun fibers of dogbane (which naturally repels insects) or silkweed. They decorated them with geometric designs that were different on each side, using contrasting-color plant fibers such as corn husks. Beginning the weekend with a look at this beautiful installation at the Smithsonian’s Renwick Gallery in D.C. “Charmed” (2022-2023) is the work of Joe Feddersen, a Washington state-based artist and member of the Colville Confederated Tribes. This glass and filament work honors the Okanagan lands in the Pacific Northwest. now in the American Museum of Natural History in NYC 🥳 I am truly delighted to announce that Paper Moon Origami earrings and necklaces are now available in the gift shop at the @amnh 🌱 each piece of origami jewelry is painstakingly folded by hand by Katie, an artist and structural engineer, and sealed for water resistance and durability! They have been flying off the shelves at the Smithsonian, so I am incredibly excited to see how well they are loved at the AMNH! I did so much research for this order and acquired so many new origami papers, because everything in the gift shop is animal themed! I knew I couldn’t just choose the typical animal patterns, so I looked for as many unconventional choices as I could find (fish, lizards, snakes, peacock, and even snow leopard) and even made some of my own! Susie Ganch applied her virtuoso skills in metal and jewelry to make this monumental bracelet from discarded plastics. It includes many single-use plastics, like coffee lids, to show that long after we throw it away, plastic lives on indefinitely, becoming a burden on our ecosystems. “Our collective detritus connects me physically to the world outside my studio while also serving as a commentary on our collective habits of consumption. From a distance they are beautiful. Up close they are dirty and covered with the evidence of their now forgotten use. With these materials, I construct pieces that are comprised of multiple interdependent parts. Often held together by tension, they have structural integrity but also flexibility and fragility. This dynamic balance mimics the cooperative nature of the universe. Sharon Massey’s etched copper fingerprint “beads,” made of her husbands fingerprints so he could comfort his mother at his grandmothers death-not being able to touch in person. Steven Young Lee’s deconstructed porcelain "Vase with Landscape and Dinosaurs" was one of the 171 objects in the Renwick Gallery’s recent exhibition, This Present Moment: Crafting a Better World. The exhibition was one in a series that reassesses what craft is in a modern world. “These objects deepen the history of the studio craft movement while also introducing contemporary artworks that push the boundaries of what we interpret the handmade to be in the twenty-first century.” Steven will be awarded as our Master of the Medium in Ceramics this May as part of our Spring Craft Weekend (May 3-5). Right across from the White House in D.C. is the Renwick Gallery, part of the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Loved this gallery! Adding it to my list of favorite museums. 🤍 . So many of us were transfixed by this fiber and dynamic light installation by Boston-based artist Janet Echelman. 💜 . The gallery describes Echelman’s “1.8 Renwick” as being inspired “by the data recorded on March 11, 2011, following the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami that rippled across the Pacific Ocean toward Japan. The geologic event was so powerful, it shifted the earth on its axis and shortened the day by 1.8 millionths of a second, lending this work its title…. Meet Chris Rifkin, one of three speakers at Caucus Day Lunch. Over many years, JRACraft board member Chris has been a major force in the craft world, serving on the boards of the South Shore Art Center and the Fuller Craft Museum, initiating CraftBoston, and supporting other craft organizations and exhibitions. She donated several works to the Smithsonian American Art Museum, including the two shown here—Sabrina Gschwandtner‘s Hula Hoop and Joyce Scott’s Yellow #4. “For the Love of Glass,” through March 2024 at the Sandwich Glass Museum, is an exhibition of sculptures from Chris’ private collection. Chris will share her collecting experiences at the Caucus Day Lunch on May 3 at the lovely 2941 Restaurant in Falls Church VA.
