Dead to the Wind: The last time we anchored in Spelve, it was to shelter from a storm with a jury-rigged anchor windlass. This week however, the windlass was fixed and a high pressure pressed down on the surface of the loch, killing the wind and flattening the sea. We fell asleep to the sound of water gently lapping against the hull. In the morning the wind had died away completely. So I jumped into the tender and rowed away from Stravaigin to explore the Loch a little, whilst the guests dropped themselves off the stern for a swim, chased with hot coffee on deck with our skipper, John. The habitat surrounding us, encompassing mountains and lochs was mirror calm. It was like looking into the eyes of a person who had mastered intrinsic stillness. I sat there, listening to the sound of songbirds, Canada Geese and Cuckoos. Sinking into the moment. From behind me I heard something exhaled loudly through its nostrils, it disturbed the dark, glossy water and seconds later a seal poked his head through the surface. He made amazing company for the next 30 minutes; curious, quiet and unusual, huge black eyes reflecting the mountains around him. He circled my tender, inching closer, getting excited when I reached lower to the loch and exhaling salty water through his nostrils. The morning moved on, we hauled anchor and set off across the water to grab a bag of fresh, rope grown muscles from @inverlussamussels for lunch, passing Provident on our way, a 100 year old gaff ketch Brixham Trawler. As we left the shelter of the Loch we turned West and began our journey towards the Outer Hebrides, anticipating the still and isolated waters of Vatersay. Has anyone been to the Kildonan ‘library’? It is effectively a shed way out in the country, which can only be approached by a long footpath from the nearest road. There are a few books that anyone can help themselves to (and hopefully return them or donate others) but there’s lots of plain paper and crayons and visitors are encouraged to write a note, drawing, or a picture and pin them onto the wall or ceiling. So there are thousands of such pieces of paper pinned all over the place. If you are ever in the area you should definitely pop in and have a look, and leave a note. It was on an earlier visit that I saw a framed photo of a Cree Indian with the verse that I made the chorus of ‘Only When the Last Tree’.
