Gregg Allman lost his battle with liver cancer at the age of 69 on May 27, 2017. His final album Southern Blood was released in September four months after his death. My brother Steve was a huge fan. Growing up he was always listening to the Allman Brothers, so naturally the rest of us became huge fans. I remember when we heard the news of Gregg’s passing. We all were calling & texting each other like we had just lost a good friend. We were shocked even though we knew of his health issues. Steve, my sister & I had just seen him in concert (with Peter Frampton) the following year. This portrait by Vincent Castiglia was drawn using Gregg’s own blood & the blood of his children. It was included in the Southern Blood album. I remember my brother coming to my house and telling me he was going to get a tattoo of this portrait. I said well good luck with that….seemed like a big risk to me. What if it looks nothing like him, etc… This weekend he took a chance on @searsious and WOW! This guy is freaking amazing!! We’re all so impressed with his artwork. My brother couldn’t be happier. Giving this a spin tonight. This and David Wilcox were my intro to blues music. Thorogood is very traditional on this all-covers release: jangly bottleneck slide and a soulful natural holler vocal and minimal production. I feel SRV kind of stole the show but George is a master and pre-dated the resurgence.
