This past week had plenty enough stress from work & I had been looking forward to finalizing plans to join another Scout Troop going to Sweet Potato Cave. I then learned my daughter was going to be off work this weekend. So, we began making plans to do an outing as a family. . Well, as Murphy would have it, she got called in to work Saturday morning. So, two potential trips tossed. . Today, we opted to make the most of it & went to a location we hadn't been to in quite some time, Secret Canyon in Lusk Creek Wilderness within Shawnee National Forest. The weather was wonderful & we chose to hike along the creek flowing in, especially since the foliage has yet to set in. . We spent a little bit of time there at the waterfall, then hiked towards our old campsite. It probably hasn't been utilized since we were last there amazingly enough. But, I want to rectify that! We then continued onward to Lusk Creek. . It was flowing nicely & I spotted a really nice opal like stone in the deepest part of the creek. Incredibly, my Daughter refused to get it for me! What a disappointment... . ....Getting into this canyon was scary tight. I had to contort my body in some strange ways just to get past the narrow passages. This one is definitely not for the claustrophobic. Once to the back of this slot, I had about 3 feet of total open space to look up and take this photo. Those darn cloudy skies weren't what I hoped for, but I managed to catch a little blue. On Thanksgiving Day, our friend Bart Knox joined us for Secret Canyon, right outside Las Vegas. This short canyon has two rappels that go down to a trickle of hot springs and the Colorado River. Horseshoe Bend is a natural wonder formed by the flow of the Colorado River through the red rocks of the canyon. We did a 5 mile hike at a place we haven’t been to in a year. Lots of water crossings, fallen logs and drop-offs. Cash is surprisingly agile for 125 pounds. Still a bit leery of water unlike Ellie who dives in head first. I had 4 tick bites, everyone else ZERO. The Navajo Bridge is a pair of steel arch bridges spanning the Colorado River in northern Arizona. The first was built in 1929 and was the tallest steel bridge in the world at the time. The second bridge opened in 1995 to support modern traffic and is similar in design to the original. The Navajo Bridge connects two remote regions of the Grand Canyon and provides access to the Navajo Indian reservation, which they consider the site sacred. The bridge also offers a breathtaking view of Marble Canyon and the turquoise blue Colorado River. It is an ideal place to take photographs and observe the nature and culture of the area. The Navajo Bridge has an interesting and curious history. During its construction, a ferry carrying workers sank and had to go around the canyon for 800 miles. During the Prohibition era, planes flew under the bridge to avoid detection. Today, the old bridge is for pedestrian and equestrian use only, and you can walk across and feel the height and majesty of the place.
