Here’s to beautiful places with wide-open spaces. 🙌 Capitol Reef National Park doesn’t seem to get a lot of hype, despite its status as one of Utah’s Might Five. And in our experience, it was definitely less crowded than its counterparts — so much so we saw hardly anyone else on this Hickman Bridge hike. [09.21.20]

Oh @yellowstonenps, one of my unexpected favorites. I remember going as a kid and thinking it was alright, but as an adult, I could spend daysssss there. While we all definitely enjoyed the scenic hikes and viewpoints, searching for wildlife is my fave thing to do. It’s imperative that you have the right tools - like @lexiealbaeck’s binoculars and a zoom lens - if you want to find/photograph wildlife in a national park. One of my favorite things about National Parks is that they can give you the opportunity to try new things. When we were at Dry Tortugas National Park, we met a very sweet couple and they let the kids borrow their paddleboards. For HOURS. And said kids fell in love with paddleboarding and they ask to go all the time. Which reminds me, we still need to get paddleboards. This was a wild hike through a Hawaiian rainforest — made all the more wild by doing it in a downpour. We trekked up muddy trails filled with roots and rocks, past monstrous waterfalls, through a bamboo thicket. And along the way was this big banyan, perfectly portraying the otherworldly vibe of it all. [01.27.23]

In 2013 and 2014, I worked two summer seasons as a tour guide at the Grand Canyon South Rim. In most ways it was the best job in the world. I got share one of the most beautiful places on the planet with others, and I got PAID for it. However, I spent an incredible amount of time away from home and it wasn’t realistic for me to be up there long term (or I’d probably still be doing it), but I’m grateful for the hundreds of days I spent showing folks around the big ditch. My kids have been visiting National Parks since they were little. In fact, @nicholasalbaeck’s first National Park was Rocky Mountain NP when he was just a few months old. As the kids have gotten older, they’ve had more of a say in what parks we visit and what we do while we’re there. In addition to doing the Junior Ranger books, they like picking out hikes and overlooks to check out. Unfortunately, the rangers didn't find the need to be there at the crack of dawn, like I did. So we waited and waited as the sun rose. Sometimes the shot can't be at the perfect time of day!
Happy National Parks Week to all of you who have been able to visit some of the many national parks that your beautiful state has to offer you or to those national parks that you still would like to visit, explore, and experience for the first time. National Parks Week started today and it will continue on through April 28, 2024, which means there is still time for all of us to enjoy the breathtaking views, amazing vantage points, beautiful wildlife that can be seen in their natural habitat, and so many more things that every single one of our national parks can offer you when you visit. There are more than 400 national parks in total across the United States. Which national park is your favorite? Which one have you been wanting to visit? Every day this week will be focused on one of the nine themes that will be able to be enjoyed and experienced within the various national parks in your state. These nine themes include discovery (4/20), volunteers (4/21), earth day (4/22), innovation (4/23), workforce Wednesday (4/24), youth engagement (4/25), community connection (4/26), junior ranger day (4/27), and arts in the parks (4/28). Each of these themes will help to preserve the national parks in the best ways possible, and it will help to keep them thriving for years to come. Which day or days are you looking forward to? Some of the California national parks I am looking forward to visiting for the first time include Death Valley, Pinnacles, Lassen Volcanic, and Kings Canyon National Parks when I am able to with those I care and love the most about. Today kicks off National Park Week, friends! Here are a few from Lassen Volcanic National Park in California - this was the first National Park I visited as a kid, and needless to say, I was HOOKED! These images are from my last trip there back in 2012, where I did the moonlight hike up Mt. Lassen. Climb up in the evening to watch the sunset, then hike back down by the light of the full moon. Do you love our national parks? Today is the start of a nine-day celebrating of our National Parks. There are over 400 national properties in the United States. They are all different shapes, sizes, and types. They celebrate the beauty of the land, cultural heritage and preserve the history of this great land. I have made a “travel poster for each day using my photos and favorite experiences in each park. I will be posting a new one daily to celebrate the day’s theme and my love for our parks. I often get a touch of I-won’t-be-back blues upon leaving a destination — and undoubtedly, many are in fact once-in-a-lifetime experiences. There are just too many places and too little time for a ton of repeat trips. The #GiantSequoia is the largest thing, to our knowledge, which has ever lived on the face of the planet (by volume). Bigger than a blue whale and a brontosaurus put together. They are truly awesome in every sense of the word. They can live for over 3,000 years.
