Posture update! 8 weeks on... I'm really happy with my progress. Still a long way to go, but look at my results so far! I feel a lot stronger, even after such a short space of time and my head is starting to align with my body again. 💃 I've always struggled with 'tech neck' due to years of being hunched over a desk in my previous office job and even when I was at school (yes, going back a few years now 😂). My aim is to be able to do normal activities and not keep tweaking my neck which results in tension headaches. Now that my core is starting to gain strength I can do simple things like bending over to pick something up without ending up in pain for days! 🙌🙌 As a bonus, I'm feeling stronger all over and even starting to get some shape in my legs and arms too! Yay! If you suffer with any kind of posture issues (even if you have no pain yet) take this as your sign to get it sorted now before any pain begins. You don't want to wait until its too late. Sympathetic tone puts us into more of a flexed position. This is natural when we are in a more “fight-or-flight” zone, in order to protect our organs and feel safe. A fetal position, or flexed position, gives us a sense of safety. What drives how our brain works and develops is the on-going input we receive from our spinal muscles throughout the day. Having proper balance between the extensors and flexor muscles in our body is essential in order for the brain to have a healthy amount of input and to interpret the world correctly. We often see kids that live in a more sympathetic state having a more flexed tone, with posture dominated by their flexors. Often having incredible difficulty coming out of that tone, for example, in a superman type of exercise. Children with retained reflexes will live in a more sympathetic state - and flexed position. Tilting the head back can also cause extreme disturbance and/or loss of balance. Our environment can also contribute to increased flexor tone with being seated so much and using screens. Postural alignment and stability are staples in our INTEGRATE program that helps to improve extensor strength for better postural stance and improved input to the brain. #posturematters #standstraight #extensortone #fightorflight
