While this may be a bit of an overstatement, extended periods of sitting does increase your risk of obesity, back and neck pain, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, deep vein thrombosis, Alzheimerโs, dementia, anxiety, depression and early all-cause mortality.ย Sedentary behviour refers to activities we do while we are sitting, reclined or lying down and expending very little energy. On average, North Americans spend about 8-11 hours a day engaging in sedentary activities. While getting some daily physical activity in is a great way to combat the risks associated with extended sitting time, it may not be enough to combat a sedentary lifestyle! Whether your working a desk job, a student in class or day, or spend all day gaming, these are all activities that can cause someone to become sedentary. Even elite athletes can become sedentary if they have a workout in the morning and follow that up with 8 hours of video games! We know sitting, lying down, or simply not moving for an extended period of time has adverse effects on our health. So what can we do about it? GET MOVING! Finding ways to break up your sedentary activities or tasks is crucial! It could be as simple as setting a reminder to get up from your desk every hour for just a few minutes to do a quick stretch. I am also a huge fan of planned walks to get extra steps in throughout the day! Scheduling in movement or activity breaks will do wonders for combatting the numerous health risks associated with a sedentary lifestyle.
