As a Chamber Musician Gemma has collaborated with Daniel Bates (Royal Overseas League competition Gold Medalist), Steven Isserlis, Ian Clarke, Guy Johnston (BBC Young Musicians Winner), the Camarilla Ensemble (Royal Over-Seas League Ensemble Winners), David Waterman (Endellion Quartet), Denis Bouriakov (New York Metropolitan Opera), Jeremie Maillard, Naomi Williams (Royal Opera House), Ani Kalayjian (Anglo-Czech Competition Strings Winner) and Marie Macleod (BBC Young Musicians Strings Winner) among others. Faculty Spotlight - Ben Frith August 13-18 “Prodigy of Prodigies” was how British artist Benjamin Frith was described by Dennis Matthews when, aged just 14, he won the British national Concerto Competition. Since then, he has been a first prizewinner in the Mozart Memorial Competition (London), and was awarded top prize in the Busoni International Piano Competition. His exciting and diverse repertoire ranges from Bach to Tippett and includes over 50 concertos. He has recorded all the John Field Piano Concertos and in 2002 reached the top of the Classical charts and since then he has recorded all Field’s Nocturnes for solo piano. His disc of Schumann’s Davidsbundlertänze was chosen as the top recommendation on the Radio 3 “Building a Library” programme. His exciting and diverse repertoire ranges from Bach to Tippett and includes over 50 concertos. Faculty Spotlight - Kathryn Stott Part one August 8-13 We are thrilled to welcome Kathryn to the course again this year. Here is a brief biography in her own words. At the age of five, I made friends with the upright piano in our living room. That was the beginning of my musical journey, one which continues as you read this. It would appear that my initial progress was rapid and by the age of eight, I found myself at a boarding school for young musicians, the Yehudi Menuhin School. During my studies there, it is now clear to me that I was heavily influenced by two occasional visitors to the school; Nadia Boulanger and Vlado Perlmuter. From them, my great passion for French music was ignited and Fauré in particular has remained the musical love of my life. Further studies at the Royal College of Music in London then led me very abruptly into the life of a professional musician via the Leeds International Piano Competition. It remains the steepest learning curve I have ever experienced. After a rollercoaster three years, I realised that I needed to re-connect with chamber music in a bid to feel more connected to other musicians and after all, this had played an important part of my musical existence since being a child. When, quite by chance, I met Yo-Yo Ma in 1978, it turned out to be one of the most fortuitous moments of my life. Since 1985, we have enjoyed a collaboration which has taken us to so many fascinating parts of the world and led to musical adventures with musicians who shared so much from their own traditions. Faculty Spotlight - Katerina Zaitseva August 8-13 - part one Praised by the Fanfare magazine as a pianist with “imaginative and colorful interpretive approach”, Katerina Zaitseva has performed in the United States, Germany, Luxemburg, France, Italy, Portugal, South Korea, Japan, China, and Russia at major venues that have included the Moscow State Conservatory Hall, John F. Kennedy Center, National Gallery of Art, Yamaha Hall in New York, as well as the opening of the Meadows Museum of Art in Dallas, with Juan Carlos II of Spain in attendance. Ms. Zaitseva has been featured as soloist with orchestras including the Russian Philharmonic Orchestra, Dallas Chamber Orchestra, Meadows Symphony Orchestra, Corvallis Symphony, Lewisville Lake Symphony, and Rapides Symphony Orchestra among others. She has recorded seven CDs for the Classical Records label, including Rachmaninoff’s Suite No. 1 and Symphonic Dances for two pianos with Nikita Fitenko; piano solo works by Rachmaninoff; piano solo works of Scriabin, and Medtner; piano solo works by Schubert, Schumann, and Liszt; Glazunov’s Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Russian Philharmonic Orchestra; works for piano four hands by Schumann and Brahms with Nikita Fitenko; and flute trios by Beethoven, Kuhlau, and Donizetti with flutist Dennette McDermott and bassoonist Douglas Bakenhus.
