#rip Terry Carter. I met Mr. Cater at a screening for Abby at Anthology Film Archives about 10 years ago. He was a last minute guest and he spent a good amount of time talking with us. I remember saying - wow he’s a young 83 yr old! Spry, warm, and still very handsome. We had a laugh when I said “if I show Abby to my fiancé and we still get married - he passed the test!” He gained an instant fan. R.I.P: For generation of teens growing up during the eighties, Terry Carter who has died aged 95 at his home in New York, was known for his role as Colonel Tigh in the feature film and subsequent Sci-Fi adventure TV series, “Battlestar Galactica” (1978-79), and prior to that, as Sergeant Joe Broadhurst for seven years on “McCloud” (1970-77), with Dennis Weaver. • Two decades before, Terry became one of the very first black actors to become a recognizable face on the household TV favourite “Sergeant Bilko”, as Private Sugarman between 1955-59, and starring Phil Silvers. • In 1964, he played Rosie Palmer in a 1964 episode of “Breaking Point” (episode: “Never Trouble Trouble Until Trouble Troubles You”), that led to the WWII drama “Combat!” (Terry was the only black actor on the show). • His mother Mercedes was from the Dominican Republic, his father William DeCoste who ran a radio repair business in Brooklyn, was of Argentine and African American descent. Terry graduated just after WWII from Stuyvesant High School, afterwards attending Hunter College, and then arriving in California to study UCLA. Then intent on studying law, he enrolled at St. John’s University, but he’d already caught the acting bug. • His career took him to stages on and off Broadway, working alongside Eartha Kitt in “Mrs. Patterson”, before honing his talents further on television and then film, as well as during the early 1960s, becoming the world’s first black TV anchor newsman for WBZ-TV (Channel 4) in Boston. • He played Gabriel in the TV-movie “The Green Pastures” (1959); was Cartwright in the film “Parrish” (1961), with Troy Donahue and Claudette Colbert; and appeared on TV shows such as “Dr. Kildare”, “Bracken’s World”, “Mannix”, “The Fall Guy”, “The Highwayman”, and the nighttime soap “Falcon Crest”. • He was Michael Anderson on “Foxy Brown”, starring the sensational Pam Grier; played Officer Tuttle in the family adventure tearjerker “Benji” (both 1974); and supported Peter Stormare in “Hamilton” (1998), and the subsequent short-lived TV series in 2001. • Three times married, Terry Carter is survived by his wife Etaferhu Zenebe and two children from a previous marriage. • •
Terry Carter was celebrated for his contributions to education, media, acting, and as a civil rights activist. Carter's early work as a newscaster began in 1965 when he joined WBZ-TV in Boston as a weekend anchor-reporter. He made history as one of the first Black television newsmen in the world. He felt he was fired from the station because of his civil rights work, which sparked his lifelong dedication to community work and helping generations of journalists of color. Carter starred in the 1973 Blaxploitation film Brother on the Run and portrayed Pam Grier's boyfriend in Foxy Brown. In the late '70s, Carter also portrayed second-in-command Colonel Tigh on the sci-fi series Battlestar Galactica and Sgt. Joe Broadhurst, McCloud partner, for seven seasons. In 1975, Carter founded Meta/4 Productions, a company dedicated to producing educational documentaries and presentations. Through Meta/4 Productions, Carter created impactful works such as "Katherine Dunham Technique" and "A Duke Named Ellington," the latter earning an Emmy nomination for "Outstanding Informational Special." His dedication to educational content was part of his broader commitment to civil rights and social justice. John Everett DeCoste was born on December 16, 1928, and passed away on April 23, 2024, at 95. His life was dedicated to supporting the Black community with jobs and opportunities. A native New Yorker, he got his start on the stages of his hometown, starring opposite Eartha Kitt in Broadway’s MRS. PATTERSON, among other roles. Carter also worked as an anchorman and film critic on Boston TV in the ‘60s; some sources cite him as the first Black on-air news host. His television work as an actor included stints on “The Phil Silvers Show,” “Combat!,” “McCloud,” and “Battlestar Galactica.” Carter also turned in memorable performances in classic films such as ABBY, FOXY BROWN and BENJI. Though initially slated by many critics, under reappraisal it has found acclaim. The film did well commercially, taking $2.46m at the box office, off of a budget of $0.5m. Highly controversial in it's day, due to a fair measure of sleaze, frequent nudity & violence well ahead of it's time. In the UK, though it was shown U/C in UK cinemas, it was withdrawn for home viewing as a #section3videonasty & upon it's re-release in 87, it was cut by 2m 48s of rape, drug use & throat slitting but the cuts were waivered. Alongside the same team's similarly themed 'Coffy', 73, to which this this film was originally conceived as a sequel, is widely considered to be amid the greatest #blacksploitationfilms ever made. Coffy & #foxybrownmovie were the 1st major genere hits to have "bad ass" female lead & early to reframe pimps & pushers as the bad guys, rather than lead antiheroes. FB is 1 of the best of the many good films from reliable #exploitationmovie #cultdirector Hill. (Spider Baby, 67, Switchblade Sisters, 75) The film is competently shot by #brickmarquard & technically well done, with sharply choreographed fight & action scenes, overseen by #bobminor. To top things off in style, there's an excellent funky soul score from #williehutch which was released as an Motown Records LP & holds classic status, in it's own right. FB is very much a vehicle for the stunning, #cultactress in the lead #pamgrier (Scream Blacula Scream, 73) who also featured in 6 other movies directed by Hill. As the titular FB, Grier gives 1 of the best & most iconic performances of her illustrious career. 12-16 Happy birthday Terry Carter, born December 16, 1928. Terry Carter is an American actor and filmmaker who is known for his roles as “Sgt. Joe Broadhurst”, on the seven-year TV series McCloud and as “Colonel Tigh” on the original Battlestar Galactica. From 1965 to 1968, Carter worked as a weekend newscaster for WBZ-TV in Boston where he became an anchor-reporter. Carter also acted in numerous TV series, specials, and theatrical films. Carter was a regular cast member of The Phil Silvers Show (popularly known as Sergeant Bilko), appearing as Pvt. Sugie Sugarman in 91 episodes between 1955 and ’59. Carter played boxer Rosie Palmer in a 1964 episode of the ABC drama Breaking Point. In 1965 he was the only black actor to have a role in the World War II drama Combat!. He played the part of Police Officer Tuttle in the 1974 children’s film Benji. He is best known internationally for his co-starring role as Colonel Tigh in the popular science-fiction TV series Battlestar Galactica. He was originally cast as Lieutenant Boomer, but was cut following a roller skating accident that fractured his ankle. After replacing Carter with Herb Jefferson, Jr., producer Glen A. Larson instead offered Terry Carter the role of Colonel Tigh, second in command of the ragtag fleet of starships. Carter also starred as Dennis Weaver‘s partner, “Sergeant Joe Broadhurst” in the detective series McCloud for seven years. He played opposite Pam Grier in the motion picture Foxy Brown. He played the role of CIA chief “Texas Slim” in Hamilton, a multinational action-adventure Swedish film (1999).
