For my new body of work showing in A STONE SKY the architecture, instruments and materials, found at a magnetic observatory, are investigated and responded to through sculpture, installation, moving image and material processes while scientific objectives are expanded to include natural navigation techniques and extra-sensory methods used by the non-human realm to form the basis of speculation as to the ability for humans to perceive the Earth’s magnetic field. My 2022 research trip to Hartland Magnetic Observatory in North Devon was a catalyst for much of this work. The history of Hartland on the Greenwich Royal Observatory website mentions a permanent distant mark or azimuth mark erected on a concrete obelisk near the site’s northern boundary, viewed through the window in the north wall of the Observing Building also known as The Absolute Hut. I am very grateful to The British Geological Survey for allowing me access to the site and particularly to Tom Martyn who shared his knowledge and gave a fascinating tour of the observatory. He was a little perplexed by my request to see the obelisk with the azimuth mark determined by observations of Polaris as he thought this description was a slight exaggeration of what was actually present. The 'obelisk' is almost hidden in thick undergrowth and impenetrable woodland so this object, whether obelisk or not, just glimpsed amongst the trees remains an enigma. It is still used, however, for surveying onto with the theodolite. A GPS measurement is taken at the site of the fixed mark and at the location of the theodolite (pillar). Using these two measurements the azimuth between the two points (fixed mark and pillar) is known. Reclaimed Windows For “Recreational Grounds: Off-Site” at Thames-side Studios in 2021 I created my first sculptural glass work. As part of the ethos of RG @recreationalgrounds we encourage artists to be imaginative with their material choices often using recycled or repurposed objects. It was the perfect opportunity for me to work by bringing my own windows to the gallery - particularly as the gallery is windowless so I couldn’t work site-specifically in my usual way! I found a series of four reclaimed Edwardian windows which became the framework for my “Wave” artworks. Over two years, intermittently I spent significant time out in the Eastern Goldfields desert area of Australia working directly with the indigenous Wongatha clan and the invasive mining procedures of the surrounding landscape. Using another #spelldress made from photography of mining areas and it's tense #stones I engage the landscape with a performative play. The ‘Dirt Drags’ is a female gesture caressing and teasing out the stories embedded in the salt lakes, the red landscape that has been used for thousands of years prior to colonialism. A soft and non invasive query.
