Se basa en una serie de trabajos previos, todos ellos referidos a la necesidad de fraccionar la realidad para conocerla y a la (im)posible partición del cuerpo, el tiempo, el espacio o la mente. Para la poeta Menchu Gutierrez esa contradicción la resolvemos cotidianamente al ligar el tiempo a aspectos fragmentarios percibidos por los sentidos. Clarice Lispector experimenta el tiempo en bocanadas, como fragmentos de vida “El mundo no tiene un orden visible y yo solo tengo el orden de la respiración. Me dejo suceder”. En YA PUEDES CONTAR, un todo, una plancha calcográfica se convierte en fragmentos para ser distancia y tiempo. Hello again! When I went to Jyväskylä on Sunday, I also visited Gallery Ratamo, which is a Printmaking and Photography Centre. Excited to see these photos of my sculpture ‘Swarm’ installed in its permanent home at ExpoCity in Dubai. Constructed from hundreds of origami fortune teller ‘bees’ that represent how we’re holding our children’s future in our hands and we have to make the right choices. Working on a new project #watchthisspace #wip I'm sketching out flowers in charcoal (I particularly like decaying ones) on to an oiled canvas base which will then be cut into strips and stitched onto some lino printed strips to form a hanging installation piece. I'm in the very early stages but the research involves a nod to my ancestral past (in terms of a #durhamstrippy textile construction) and witnessing the turmoil and devastation of the miners strike in the Northeast of England exactly 40 years ago. I'm particularly interested in how past events/experiences shape our lives and decision making. The canvas is approx 1.5 metres and before I fix the charcoal to the surface I'm considering walking all over it........pretty similar to the political event at the time. I'll be back in Belfast on Thursday the 15th for an Artist Talk! 'Orthography In Disregard' Exhibition Dates: 8th – 29th February 2024 Artist Talk on Thursday 11th February, 11am-12pm, all welcome. General opening hours: Monday – Thursday, 10am-5pm. 'Letters seem to move and shift as I try to make sense of the words. All rules of language no longer apply; letters become three-dimensional, layering on top of one another and becoming so intertwined that meaning can no longer be found. However, see how the letters are now merely lines, shapes, and forms floating off the page—open for interpretation.' Orthography In Disregard is a solo exhibition by Elize de Beer that explores written language, the objectivity and tradition of books, and an interpretation of her dyslexic reading experience. Alongside a series of etchings, screenprints, and letterpress prints, de Beer has created large-scale pop-up book sculptures. These abstract text-based artworks aim to provide viewers with an immersive and alternative reading experience. This exhibition challenges the conventional boundaries of orthography and books through de Beer’s dyslexic lens. Dyslexia, a neurodivergent condition, influences the way individuals process and decode written language. Books as carriers of that written language were traditionally adorned in hand-marbled paper and letterpress type. In Orthography In Disregard, books are transformed into large-scale sculptural objects—still carriers of knowledge, but now abstracted across the multiple planes and forms of paper mechanisms. Orthography in Disregard celebrates the fluidity of language and the nature of books. They are both carriers of meaning that can change and shift depending on the reader. Esta es la primera pieza ya armada del proyecto “Improntas Naturales para una Vivienda”, al ser exhibida se instala de forma que simula el techo de una casa maya tradicional. La casa maya es la primera experiencia de habitar el territorio, la materia prima que se necesita para construirla (“amarrarla” como dicen los mayas) es proporcionada por la naturaleza que los rodea, siendo materiales naturales y endémicos, biodegradables y sustentables. El amarrar una casa hace referencia a la creación del mundo. New shoots push through cracks in concrete, vines scale dilapidated walls and trees emerge from the remnants of old houses. These organic structures break down barriers and breathe life into desolate landscapes. Ecosystems, born from abandonment, become sanctuaries for species seeking refuge from urbanisation and human destruction.

Last but certainly not least, I am delighted to present new work by recent @blackchurchprint Graduate Award recipient Grace Ryan. 'Thorned Intimacies: Epidermal Dialectics' continues the artist's ongoing exploration of gendered materials, hybridity, abjection, and desire. I met Grace last year @ncad_fineartprint when I was lecturing there, and her work made such an impression on me that I knew I wanted her to be involved in Unlimiting the Edition. Grace was among 15 outstanding graduates of 2023 selected by the RDS Visual Art Awards. Curation has given me the chance to invite artists to make and show work they might never have otherwise. I was lucky enough to work alongside @ailbhebarrett @graphicstudiodublin for many years. She told me she had an idea for an installation (a parallax forest, no less), and after gently nudging her to make it over the years, Unlimiting the Edition @blackchurchprint finally gave her the push 😊 'The Wood for the Trees', Ailbhe's site-specific, large scale carborundum printed installation is something to behold. Tried out a 3D paper and wax piece using my woodblock spine print. It came out pretty cool once I worked out the kinks of joining and balancing 16 separate pieces! Spread and Distribute: Shared (v.1.0) DIY Ferrofluid, water vessel, mechanical kinetic system, arduino, digital printing on paper 80x20x35 cm (object) 2023 - - There is one distinct stage that can only be found in the working process of the lithography printing technique among other printmaking techniques, which is when an image that has been chemically treated on a stone surface is erased until it is clean, but in the end, the image can reappear due to the principle of repulsion between water and oil. This snippet of the process sparked the artist's idea of creating a work of art whose visuals can appear and disappear on their own without leaving physical traces of printmaking materials. The pattern of appearance and disappearance has similarities with the phenomenon of human ability to perceive and interpret the information value of artistic traces of printmaking in the context of screen culture. By understanding this expansion of printmaking conventions, the artist discovers a broader printmaking mechanism by utilizing a matrix created from ferrofluid material, a liquid material that can respond to magnetic forces so that its physical form can change. The unique properties of this material are able to transform conventional imprints into a visual printmaking work which is characterized as time-based art, where the image matrix can appear and disappear on its own, forming a repetitive pattern of unique black-and-white visual text influenced by the action-reaction of the magnetic field and ferrofluid. The result of the visual pattern is then documented in the form of photo-capture and reprinted on sheets of paper to emphasize the process of elimination of intact artistic imagery due to information dissemination. This work seeks to offer a perspective on the phenomenon of information distribution in the digital era, where the acceleration in the advancement of technology and information has led to a sea of 'images'. What happens next is the ability of humans to digest and fully interpret the information that they receive every day through the screen of their personal devices, which sometimes leads to misinterpretations affecting social dynamics.

Formal-visual, materiality, handmade, singular, plural and popular aspects are the strengths of contemporary painting. However, the plurality of contemporary painting also becomes an obstacle in interpreting and understanding the content of painting. This is also visible in the exhibition of “Hidden Layers: Trace of tradition in contemporary painting”. The content of traditional issues becomes hidden. For a long time, the dualism between form and content in painting has been questioned. Post-tradition works have more problems, because the methods, signs/iconography and meaning (semiotics) and representation of the problems come from two opposing sources: traditional and modern values. Several works in the exhibition convey the atmosphere of tradition, through adaptation and transformation of traditional visual styles. Conversely, this does not mean that viewers can understand the content and narrative. Nevertheless, works of art are not reports or news, but are artistic expressions with aesthetic values. That's the essence, despite it's about hidden content/meaning. After all, every work of contemporary art is contingent (depending on context and explanation).
