Redemption! . A few months ago, I shared a (somewhat) failed version of this top. It’s the @sewhouse7 Tabor V-Neck, a pattern I ADORE, but the fabric I used shrunk drastically in the wash, even though I prewashed it 🥲 Well, I re-pre-washed that fabric and made a second version and it’s perfect (and didn’t shrink in the wash!). You can see in the second photo just how much that previous version shrank 🫠 . It’s the same as before, size 4 cropped long sleeve, in the same fabric, @moodfabrics Rag and Bone rayon jersey. It’s light and airy and super comfy, though it doesn’t have great recovery and the elbows start to bag out after about a day. For the future, I’d like to make this in a few more neutral colors because it’s such a great staple. I got married! And yes, I made my dress! I wasn’t opposed to a white dress. I tried some on. I looking online at a lot. None of them felt right. I also didn’t actually really want to make my dress. I didn’t want the pressure of it. I wanted to do other things. But with all my searching I just couldn’t find something that was me. Enter @cashmerette #uptondress. I made the v-neck princess bodice with flutter sleeves and maxi gored skirt from the expansion. I made precisely one change that wasn’t fitting-related: I altered the back neckline. I wanted a dress with ONE dramatic element, but was pretty open to what that was. Color, sleeves, shape, whatever. A touch of drama but not too crazy over the top. This embroidered mesh fabric caught my eye on a random visit to @fabrictopia.sa and pretty much everything else was based on that. That fabric was my drama and the dress is a pretty straightforward design. Skirt choice was to avoid too much of a curve so I could utilize the scalloped hem. I considered white fabric underneath but the color of the mesh base made it look dirty and dingy. Many swatches later, I settled on this ocean blue viscose satin from @moodfabrics. I made at least 3 mock-ups (I think), with the last two each involving plenty of minor tweaks, and that’s after I’ve previously made this pattern twice. And I have to tell you, if you are into sewing or another more solitary hobby, get you some friends who share that hobby. I truly could not have even dreamed of attempting this project without Saremy of @sewsewlive and the wonderful people of the Sew Sew Guild. This dress is basically a group project. I could gush about them for ages and maybe I will some other day. I am delighted to share the lovely dress made for a wonderful mother of the bride! She googled “custom dressmaker”, my name popped up, and she contacted me via my website, asking if I was able to help her create the dress she was looking for. I said “yes!” to the dress and we got started right away. After discussing her inspiration looks on her Pinterest board and closely studying the details, we settled on a classic Vogue pattern #v8766 using navy lace fabric from @moodfabrics and matching navy satin from @millendstorepdx. After several fittings and a few tweaks here and there, her dress turned out beautifully! The flattering neckline and sheer lace bodice with elbow length sleeves fits perfectly into the swishy tea-length circle skirt. It’s fully lined, has built in bra cups and interior hidden hanging straps. So pretty, inside and out! PS she also had me make a little outfit in linen for the bridal brunch following the wedding. The more often I post this fabric, the more likely I am to keep working on this project haha! 💚 So here's part one of making a deep green suit for my husband! I'm using Simplicity pattern #s8962 for the blazer and #s9043 for the pants. After adjusting the pattern pieces to fit, I went ahead and cut out the dozens and dozens of pieces. Fingers crossed the suit will be ready for the early fall weddings we are invited to! 🧵
Another couple of projects from this past weekend, the Paradise Patterns Protea pants in the brightest green brushed tencel twill. This fabric feels like a heavy silk and swishes around in this dramatic shape. I didn’t have to do a single thing to this pattern except hem it to 27”. I think I could probably take off another half inch at least, especially with flat shoes. The fit is great though, which is nice since I didn’t feel like making a test version first. The waistband looks like it’s pulling, but it’s probably just a wrinkle. I think I used a tricot interfacing, which was probably not the right choice here. I really have no idea how to style day glow green pants, but today I paired them with one of the Orlando tees I made this weekend. I love everything about the Orlando, and it’s a 30 minute sew, so no reason not to make a bunch. This is a super soft bamboo stretch jersey from my stash. It’s incredibly soft and stretchy, and has a bit of a shimmer to it. It’s also my favorite color, obviously. Anyway, I love these pants and will probably make at least one more pair. I might try to find a fabric that wrinkles less easily for next time, though. I’ll also be keeping my tripod in the car because the parking garage roof is my new favorite location for photos! Last weekend I witnessed the beautiful wedding of my friend @jordan.kinzler and her, now hubby, Brendan (would have included pictures, but Jordan and Brendan said they’d be right back when we attempted to take pictures with them 😂). It was a beautiful outside ceremony with a lavish reception inside. The bride was stunning and I cried, as I always do at weddings. Also, it was wonderful to run into my BFF @elizabethring15! Details: For this event, I wanted something a little less black tie and more comfortable. I found this beautiful emerald green tencel fabric from @moodfabrics. I lined the bodice with Egyptian cotton in a mint color, also from Mood. I wanted a nice looking inside, especially since tencel frays so much and debated french seams, surging, and Hong Kong seam finish. I decided on Hong Kong seams with a beautiful saturated hot pink bias tape. I absolutely adore the New Look pattern, #N6750! First, the directions are more comprehensive than some of the other Simplicity patterns, which I don’t necessarily need, but it's nice to have. Also, the pattern was only $2.99, which considering patterns run around $20 was a big win. The pattern didn’t have the exact view I made. I went with both views A & B where I took the sleeves from A and made the longer version B (I bought a ¼ yd extra fabric to achieve the sleeves with the view B yardage.) Considering I’m 5’9, this was an excellent decision. I absolutely loved wearing this dress and didn’t get too hot in the overwhelming St. Louis heat. A big concert deserves a new gown! This cashmerette upton dress is as comfortable as it is beautiful. I used an amazing Philip Lim interfaced satin from mood for the main dress, and an equally amazing rhinestoned lace from my local fabric store. I altered the front and back necklines to be 1.5” lower, and narrowed the shoulders by I think an inch, and added bra keepers for the widened neckline. At 5’3”, I made the maxi length, which worked out to be the requisite floor length. The gored skirt has just enough drama and swish without being overwhelming, and the heavy 450gsm satin feels so luxe. Because the satin has some stretch, I got away with no zipper, which keeps the back looking streamlined. Finally started crackalackin on this flared shirt dress pattern #Vogue8577 after taking forever to cut all the damn pieces out. The lining is basically all done and I just started on the dress (outer? Shell?) bodice. I'm glad I did the lining first bc I am crap at gathers and had to redo some things, however since it has no wrong side I sewed the front bodice pieces on backwards twice 😩 and had to redo the darts to face the right way dammit lol. Fabric is a totally Cyndi-color green cotton shirting from @moodfabrics (apparently an import from ESPAÑA), lining is cotton poplin also from Mood, but not Spain.
