1 Kings 19 depicts the story of Elijah who ran into the wilderness and asked to die. He no longer saw his value on earth, he no longer believed that he was capable of accomplishing what God had called him to. Similarly, but of a different context, I felt the same way. Am I capable of handling what God has called me to? My image of myself shrunk to that of a mere human and all I saw were flaws, insecurities, inabilities, and failures. Instead of chastising Elijah, what did God do? He fed him and gave Him rest for the journey that led to His Presence. Where is that quiet place you need to go with God in order to restore your confidence, in order to be reminded of the power of the One who lives inside you? Wherever it is, if it is necessary, dwell in there for some time and SEEK His presence. “The angel of the LORD came back a second time and touched him and said, ‘Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.’ So he got up and ate and drank. Imagine yourself in a wilderness journey. It's dark, you are surrounded by trees and there is a great fog hindering you from seeing far ahead. You become afraid, stumbling and falling on the ground as you desperately try to find a way out. You are crying out for Jesus. Where is Jesus? He is on the side, reading a newspaper as you freak out stumbling around, trying to find your way out without Him but are just going in endless circles. You have not left His presence, you just do not realize that you are in it. You're too busy being scared, worried and anxious when Jesus is right there on the side, simply waiting for you to rest in His presence. You need to calm down, dissipate the fears inside of you and just rest there. If Jesus has not moved then you must remain there until He instructs you otherwise. In the silence of God's presence, our anxious spirits grow restless, opening cracks for the devil to implant seeds of doubt and of fear. But if only we could maintain our ground, continue to build our faith even in the shadows of darkness. Believing that even though He feels absent, He still remains. Why is it so much easier for us to imagine ourselves failing than it is to imagine ourselves succeeding? We get so caught up in the things that could go wrong we don't spend time focusing on the things that could go right. We hear the doubts of others, we present the doubts to ourselves, our enemies plant the seeds and now we don't have faith anymore we have fear. We have doubt, we have shame, we have the ghost of past mistakes coming back to haunt us. We are now incapable of seeing what we can be because we're too busy focused on what we are not. Sometimes we get so caught up in our weakness, imperfections, and shortcomings that we let them define us. We let the past define us. We let the voices of others define us. Sometimes God doesn't deliver us from the storm. He lets it rage on and resides with us there. He lets the storm form us into the person we need to be for the next journey of life. The enemy constantly tries to take things from us that he has no claim over: joy, happiness, fulfillment, worth etc. He deceives the minds of men to think that he holds the power to them all but he has no such authority. We must realize the trespassers in our land and send them out or they'll convince you that the land belongs to them and you have no claim to it. God spoke to me yesterday and told me, "Do not hate the image of yourself during the process". I was reminded of the image of a road construction zone. During construction the road is torn up and the once formed road is destroyed. Sometimes that's the stage of life that we're in, the process of creating something new. We don't look the way we used to and we have not yet been created in the image God envisioned for us. We're in the process of breaking but despite how others view us during that process, God sees beauty. Why? He sees a broken soul, a broken vessel ready for construction, for the creation of something new. So despite what you see now, despite what others see during your time of construction remember that it is God that is rebuilding you. The same God who created the heavens and the earth. It saddens my heart to hear and to see how many of us feel so alone. The devil whispers into our ears lies trying to mask them as the truth. I have these moments where I ask God if He's sure it's me He wants to use. As if I have a right to doubt what God wants to do. But sometimes we look at ourselves and all we see is defeat, failure, insecurity and hopelessness. And God says, "You don't see what I see but I'll be patient and show you." He says, "I see beauty, I see grace, I see perseverance through hard times, I see the potential of someone to be great and wonderful. I see the soul I long for." There's a difference between being broken and being broken by God. Both hurt, but one has a purpose, one knows exactly where it's taking you. One has a destination and will use your brokenness to help somebody else in theirs. You may not see it, you may not understand it but God breaks you to make you. Though this journey may seem far, your current status may not be what you wanted it to be, He is the same God who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light. There are times in our lives when we must trust God completely and whole heartedly. He will command you to walk, fall, or jump and you have no idea where you're going. The destination is unknown, the length of the journey is unknown, the process is unknown. But what is known is the God you serve, the God who leads you, loves you and protects you. So even though you may not know God's path for you at this moment, even if you may not understand this process, can I request of you to trust Him? Sometimes it's hard to believe in yourself. To look into yourself and see anything worth fighting for. But that's the amazing thing about God, His love. Sometimes we believe that we've let go and trusted God with everything. But there's still this part inside of us that is afraid to let go, afraid of the outcome that He will create, afraid of what we've given Him to work with. And we're so used to being in control that letting go becomes a struggle for us, it becomes a fear. We hand our hearts to God but with our fingers still attached. Sometimes the hardest thing to do is to ask for help. It does not make you weak, it does not define you it simply means you know you cannot do this alone. And in so many cases we were never meant to. There are so many burdens, pains, and troubles that we try to bare on our own. I'm very guilty of that. It's sometimes easier to just carry it alone and maintain the facade of strength when inside you're crumbling. But I'm beginning to learn that in order to grow, I need to know when I need help. While talking to a close friend of mine last night we began to ponder on this thought on this pain. Some of us are afraid to step out of the darkness because what lays before us is unknown territory. So it becomes much easier to stay in that pain because you know it so well. Unbeknownst to us the freedom that lies beyond. I want to say to everyone who's afraid to step out, whose voices urge you to stay inside and confine yourself to a cell never meant for you. You are loved by God. Imagine pain as a splinter embedded into your skin. The longer you leave it there, the more your body begins to cover it up and take it in as part of the body. It's come to my knowledge that sometimes we spend our time trying to water dead plants. Trying to bring something back to life that has withered away.
