Ezekiel Hopkins was an Anglican bishop in Ireland. Here he writes on the parable of Lazarus and the Rich Man from Luke 16:19-30. He compares the two men, one who lived in luxury, and the other a poor Christian. The rich man had an unexhausted store to supply his luxury while the other barely had any necessities to spend a life in the commands of God. Dives (the common name for the rich man) worshipped only his own belly, whereas Lazarus entertained dogs by allowing them to lick his sores. Hopkins expresses exasperation that most people with such extreme excess would think to give some leftover scraps to God’s children? Note that Hopkins has moral exasperation for the life of the rich man (eventually sent to hell in the parable), whereas he never claims Lazarus went to heaven because of his status or his suffering: it’s a life spent in the commands of God. Would we be so quick to think a destitute person could still be daily following the commands of God, or is that only for us with resources? Is there any evidence for Dives “worship” of his belly other than his behavior? What sort of worship would we demonstrate to those who might observe us just outside our door? Would you even permit a poor person to reside at your gate? Thomas Manton was an English Puritan, and clerk to the Westminster Assembly. Here he comments on James 1:27, “Religion that is pure and undefined before the father is to keep oneself unstained from the world, and to visit orphans and widows in their suffering.” Manton rephrases it by saying this mercy, this visiting of the vulnerable in their suffering, provides proof and evidence of our interest in the eternal mercy of God Himself. Do we want to hear this? Don’t we know orphans and widows who truly deserve their fate, or that providing aid to those who are innocent would only strengthen the hand of those who are abusing them? Don’t we want a path to holiness, “final salvation”, to God’s favor, that involves a whole lot of time spent alone in prayer and study? Manton in contrast sees the poetic and truthful connection between our good deeds and God’s saving grace by using the word “mercy” for both. 2021... Due anni fa circa, con Ludovico Andreoni siamo partiti per un'avventura che Falicon, la piramide alle spalle di Nizza, ci ha indicato. Doveva essere un viaggio di esperienza mentale ed energetica per raggiungere una certa trasformazione. I giorni che abbiamo trascorso insieme sono stati senz'altro, molto speciali. Avevo portato Ludo con me nella mia città natale, Nizza, per fargli conoscere la vita da banlieue. Fargli fare un tuffo nelle vicende della penombra per poi riemergere e raggiungere quei luoghi magici illuminati da un altro sole. Theopolis e il Col de Vence. Qualche volta durante le conferenze o gli incontri, ho parlato di quei luoghi... Durante la mia infanzia non è stata solo la piramide di Falicon ad avermi donato un'esperienza di contatto. Quando vivi per strada, diventi la strada... Sei condotto non solo nell' altrove, ma anche ad errare in posti lontani senza nemmeno accorgerti di avere fatto molti kilometri. Mostrerò questi luoghi e ne parlerò lunedì 13 novembre quando trasmetteremo questo documentario. Si tratta di un lavoro alla buona... non avevamo il materiale giusto, quella volta. Un telefonino ed una semplice telecamera notturna non sono idonei per fare delle belle riprese. Here he reflects on the meaning of the parable of the Good Samaritan from Luke 10. Drawing on the detail that the Samaritan helped a man of another race and religion, he says that authentic love must be stronger than the instinct for self-preservation. There are duties to resist that which hardens the heart and chills pity. Today, aren’t we dead set an opposite ethic, using “self-preservation” as a higher law, such that we undertake measures to keep afflicted persons of other races and religions as far as possible away from us? Life is impossible to control; it is like trying to shepherd the wind. The difference between a believer and an unbeliever is this: the believer receives everything as a gift from God, recognizes their purpose in life before Him, and toils all their days under the sun with joy, while the unbeliever toils without purpose. A man's heart is deceitfully wicked; who could know it? Trying to fully understand the ways of a man is like shepherding the wind. God's ways are too high for us; we can not comprehend them. Trying to understand God's ways is also like shepherding the wind. A man plans his ways, but the Lord directs his steps. We are all at the mercy of the Lord. We do not gain leverage over Him by doing good deeds, as if to say, "I did this, Lord. You owe me!" No. It doesn't work like that. God does what He wills, and we either submit or rebel. Scripture is filled with tension. Wisdom exists in the midst of this tension. Being dogmatic on one side or another often lends itself toward error. Fear God, keep His commandments, and enjoy the lot He has distributed to you under the sun. This is God's gift to man.

This was a phenomenal book. We all know the passages in Scripture about infant faith. God caused David to trust in Him at his mother’s breast; John the Baptist leapt in his mother’s womb, for example. Today, most would look at those passages and deduce that those are extraordinary circumstances and that paedofaith is not the norm. However, paedofaith being the norm among God’s covenant people is exactly what Lusk argues for. Convincingly, I might add. Psalm 22 is a famous Christological psalm. In it, David says, “Yet you brought me out of the womb; you made me trust in you, even at my mother’s breast.” Of course, this passage is Christological, but if we jump right to Christ in the passage, we’ll miss the fact that the immediate context is a psalm written by David long before Christ was born. He was writing prophetically, sure. And he was writing in the Spirit of Christ, no doubt. But he was not writing something that was not true for him. God, by the power of His Spirit, was speaking prophetically through David’s own words and experience of being a covenant child. These psalms were sung, and are still sung, by God’s covenant people. When we sing the psalms, we join in the words of David in the Spirit of Christ and sing these words over ourselves and each other for the building up of the brethren in the faith. We, the Gentiles, have been grafted in. Israel’s history is our history. Christ’s history is our history. This is what it means to be in God’s covenant, to have union with Christ. What a powerful thing it is to speak the words of Christ in the Spirit of Christ over the body of Christ and believe what He says to be true. It is awe-inspiring to think about the depth and richness that this brings to the lives of Christians today. Glorious! Faith is not intellectual ascent. Rather, it is relational trust. When God blesses us with children, because no life is conceived apart from His will, He is the One who brings them forth from the womb, causing them to trust in Him at their mother’s breast. Leithart does a great job of shaping creation, and our lives, through a liturgical lens. The section on the Levitical sacrificial system and how it relates to modern worship and liturgy was my favorite. Something that really stuck with me is how, like Jacob, we wear the skin of our older Brother to receive the blessing from our Father. Think about that for a second. Leithart is always good for jaw dropping meditation like that. Another point that really stuck with me is how time is not moving toward death. It moves toward resurrection. As a Christian, I know I will be raised one day, Lord willing. That is the Christian hope after all. But I realized when I read that that I do perceive time passing and my getting older as approaching death. I don't really view time passing as my approaching resurrection, but that is exactly how a Christian should be thinking. Death is swallowed up by life. So, with each passing day we ought to rejoice that our end in this life is drawing nearer, because we are approaching glory. That is a magnificent hope indeed. I also really enjoyed how Leithart pointed out the items that are contained in the Ark of the Covenant: the tablets, manna, and Aaron's rod. The Ark of the Covenant was located in the Most Holy Place. It was where God sat on His throne above the cherubim. The priests weren't even allowed in this room. But we are. Today, we enter the divine liturgy; church. As we come in we see a podium with a Bible resting on it (tablets). We see a table with bread and wine for the Eucharist (manna). Lastly, a pastor (Aaron's rod). We are instructed, fed, and shepherded by God and the fullness of this is manifested most gloriously during the assembling of saints on Sunday as we all participate in the divine nature together in the liturgy of the Church. This one deals with Bible reading, how to do it well, and fix bad habits in our reading.
