✨Gypsum✨ At first glance, it may look like I was taking the piss out of my Fae race when I named their realm Gypsum. The mineral gypsum is incredibly common. It's mined in large quantities and is used in everything from fertilizer, to building equipment, and even toothpaste. For a race that considers themselves above and beyond, why choose that name? Because look at what it can become. A desert rose that builds in itself and on others. A White Sands desert that looks absolutely alien. The Fae of my Trimarked Series recognize they could be common. Their caste system is built on how far they rise from mediocrity. On how disciplined they are. On what new patterns they can build their lives on through force of will. Omg so many stories that led to this album. Thank you so so much to those over the years who lent an ear, and shared a thought that then bubbled into the tracks in the upcoming album. 1. Had a chance to play a mishmash of ideas live , mixed with other songs, and it just felt right. So I guess that’s when it all started to brew. 2. I was on holidays in this beautiful place, and the stories embedded in the culture where the last trigger to decide to share one. 3. On the plane back, listening back to dozens of tracks, versions of tracks or ideas of tracks from the past year. From these seeds stemmed the 7 tracks in fade into bliss. 4. Road trip, away from the coast, looking for a forever place. Something about these mountains. Here’s when the name for the album just popped into existence. 5. Only a few days later I came up with the cover. I didn’t even have the songs, but this image just felt right. It kinda captured the essence of what I was aiming for, even before I knew how I might tell it. 6. Played the early sketches of the album live for the first time. So much fun. Thank you to those who were there and endured through it haha. 7. Notes. So many notes. So many listens. Infinite possibilities. 8. When it all finally fell into place. This was the first time all the “finished” tracks came together under the same Ableton session, and I could start calling it done. Is it ever done though? #thestorybehindthestory Isn’t this cover beautiful? I love the story this cover tells. When I was scheduled to have Bronwyn’s cover designed I was still writing another book in the series, Intuition. I had no idea what Bronwyn’s story would be. I hadn’t even read yet the original novel she would be based on (Mansfield Park). I had, however, seen the 1999 movie and MC in the movie loves to write. I decided I’d carry that over into my version and somehow tie it into the plot. And fire because a flame quill pen is cool. I’ve met Mike Rowe twice (Discovery Channel’s “Dirty Jobs” and TBN’s “The Story Behind the Story”) or, better phrased, our lives have intersected in different cities. And that first chance encounter may have led to my acting career. But I’m getting ahead of myself. The story inauspiciously starts in May 2013, when I spotted the multi-talented writer and host at the Palace Cafe in New Orleans. He obliged my request for a photograph. He laughed when I blurted out, “Heck, if you’re here, this place must be dirty!” Before parting, I mentioned that I was frequently mistaken for RDJ to which he replied I should do something with that. Fast forward, in May 2022, I starred in Season 1, Episode 8 of “The Story Behind the Story” where I played the famed director Frank Capra. To my knowledge, Mike was not involved in my casting and you can hardly blame him if he didn’t recall a brief fan interaction ten years prior. Back to the story. We filmed in various locations in Sapulpa, Tulsa (Harwelden Mansion), and Guthrie, Oklahoma. In Guthrie, we re-enacted the concluding scene in “It’s A Wonderful Life” (1946) with faux Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed as I - err, I mean Frank Capra - directed them. We did this at 3am with fake snow blowing all around us and large bright lights turning the thick of night into daytime. It was an incredible experience made better by the amazingly kind and talented crew and cast. Big thanks to producer Micah Barnard, director Jonathan Coussens and, of course, Mike Rowe, who may have started my path in acting with a chance encounter almost 10 years to the day before my role in his show. I really look forward to the shortest day, because it means we're now starting the journey towards spring - my favourite season (even if we do have dreary January and February to get through first!) Some years ago, I wrote a short story set at the winter solstice, and one day when I have time I plan to write short stories set at the summer solstice and spring and autumn equinoxes too. So many stories in my head, and never enough hours in the day whatever time of year it is... My first clinical job was with a small therapeutic program that had wrapped its philosophical approach around the Native American principles of community and shared responsibility, and specifically the Lakota values of kinship, respect, and fortitude. The remarkable healing that unfolded within the supportive arms of this community, including for many who had been labeled as chronic or “too far gone” was nothing short of miraculous. It was these values and the practices that surrounded them that shaped my professional and personal outlook on how we not only heal but thrive. This is a newspaper clipping of my grandfather, "Wildman Lou" who was a professional boxer in the 1930s. He died when I was young; my only memory of him is sitting on his lap as he tried to teach me to count to ten in Spanish. Although I know little about him or his career, I can't imagine boxing is or was an easy profession; that's why I gave Larry, the mother's boyfriend in COYOTE QUEEN, this profession. While there is no excuse for domestic violence, I do think it's important to portray antagonists as fully developed characters with their own dreams and (emotional) wounds. In the story, twelve-year-old Fud is desperate to escape an abusive situation; when her mother's boyfriend brings home a boat he plans to fix up and turn into their permanent home, she enters a local beauty pageant, hoping to win the prize money she and her mother need to leave. An eerie connection to a local pack of coyotes teaches her who she really is––and who she can save. COYOTE QUEEN publishes next Tuesday, 10/10. Sometimes I forget about old work I’ve made. Let me paint you a picture of the where and how this piece came to be. It was a dark and deeply frozen spell in a small town on the shore of Lake Superior, the hardest winter in 100 years, so they said. Snow drifts up to the second floor and streets encased in ice for 5 months. I made small, intimate things like this wall box at a work bench in a basement so cold that every 20 minutes or so I’d climb the stairs to the kitchen sink and plunge my stiff, icy hands under hot running water. Everything was cold. A barren, lonely, confusing, and colorless time, but for visions of a spring thaw coaxed from the resistant clay. When the first decent melt finally arrived in that town I hit the road. I don’t know where this piece is now. Ok!
