A savour the moment (/navel gazing …) post✨ It is WILD that I get to be here and call this work. I’m in Cornwall, with six whole writing days ahead of me, working on the 5th Shell House mystery ✍️🌊 Three years ago I was readying The Shell House Detectives for submission, full of hope - and no little dread - for what lay ahead. My last novel had been turned down by publishers, as had the pre-reworked version before that. I’d been out of contract since my last book came out in 2017 - the sales of my previous four novels considered ‘bad track’ - and I’d already junked another book I’d spent two years working on. But despite these literary corpses, this disappointment, I was still in love with the actual writing bit and feeling good about my ability to do it💗 (as any writer knows, those are the only parts we have control of - the work, and how we feel about it). Plus I was long enough in the tooth to know that seeking to be published - indeed being published - means accepting all kinds of uncertainties. I wasn’t going to put down my pen✨ In summer 2021 The Shell House Detectives went on submission and it happened to cross the desk of just the right editor at just the right time (hello @vic.haslam 🥰) and that’s where the luck came in. And oh what luck 💕 Almost three years on, I’ve published three Shell House Detectives novels with Thomas & Mercer/ @amazonpublishing, have a 4th that’s currently being copy edited, and am working on the 5th. This series has found more readers than I’ve ever had, and the reviews are the loveliest too 🙏 So here, in this place of big skies, big seas and endless promise, I’m taking a minute to savour it all, and say … if you love something, don’t give up on it. Even if, every day, we’re given a dozen different reasons to falter or lose faith. Because you never know what lies ahead, or how your fortunes can turn on a dime✨As to me? I just feel very lucky to be here in my favourite place, writing these books, three years on. So cheers to that 🩵

I recently gave a talk to a group of writers aimed simply at encouraging them. And one of the things I said was this… When you first start writing you think the reward will be achievements. Getting a book published. Having that book read by people other than your mom. Earning income. Gathering recognition, praise, awards. But I don’t think we’re wired to find lasting joy in any of those things. I think we’re wired for relationships. For deep friendships. For community. To know people and have them know us. To belong. I told the group of writers that the biggest and best reward from my writing has actually been my writer friends. We first met in 2012. But eight years ago, Courtney Walsh and Katie Ganshert and I started a conversation on the Voxer app that has been going continuously ever since. I “talk” to them on the app all the time but last Mon-Fri we made time for a getaway to my lake house. Courtney planned delicious vegan meals, we mock-watched and serious-watched movies, stared at the lake, relaxed, ate out twice, did a puzzle and talked and laughed. And it was a JOY. As a writer, you’re probably familiar with the concept of world building (which my phone tried to correct to ‘world domination’). You understand the struggle of finding your way in a strange universe, or a known universe with new rules. You have floundered to find your footing, fought to draft and redraft until the story sings. And that’s what we’re doing with Intrepid Imagination. We’re drafting and revising. Seeing what works, what rules of the universe this venture operates under. My newest hobby? Thumbing through beloved “wanderlust reads”, curating a curriculum for my upcoming tour of the Italian Riviera, where we learn the art of how to “travel write to travel RIGHT.” I’m collecting delicious examples of concepts I can easily teach on the go, for us to practice together. Tools that are simple but impactful, to make our writing sing. Plus, it means I’m putting together a pretty stellar compendium of travel books I can’t wait to share with the group in advance of our leave-taking. I know our participants will be travelers who love reading, so I’m picturing loads of talking about the books that linger for us as we twirl glossy spools of pesto pasta around our forks and take another sip of Ligurian Vermentino, heady with the pine wood and sea breeze of coastal Italy, threaded with a minerality all its own. I love putting together this tour with the travel heroes at Ciao Andiamo as I know with their deep experience in Liguria and my years of travel writing, we are putting together an unforgettable journey. I can hardly wait for October 14th when we set off together! Years ago, when I was a writer in residence at Hedgebrook, a sanctuary for female writers nestled on Whidbey Island, I wrote my debut nonfiction book, ‘Note to Self: A Seven-Step Path to Gratitude and Growth.’ . . One day, I saw a figure in the distance. His silhouette, framed against the verdant backdrop, was marked by the steady rhythm of a wheelbarrow he pushed with purpose. The lines etched upon his face, and the subtle hitch in his step painted the portrait of a gardener—or perhaps, as my imagination would have it, a soldier who returned from the war in Afghanistan. . . This image, etched into my memory, would later inspire Sean “Mick” McPherson, the protagonist in my crime thriller series. Mick, too, has a limp, though the origins are different from the narrative I had initially thought. It had me thinking, what if we as adults were to have that same outlook towards Life? Keep reading. What I love about my children's expression of happiness is that it is very much in the present. Children aren't likely to think, "I'll hold that off for the future" cause they want to experience it now. Whether it's food, water, or play. My kids drag their feet to sleep. They act as if they are gonna miss out on some wild event if they fall asleep. I've seen them wondering the hallways at bedtime. There aren't any late night parties, I assure them, but I'm getting it now. It's the idea that Life should be so amazing. Your day should be the best ever that you don't want it to end. Isn't that lovely? There is meaning when you are able to look at Life through the eyes of a child. Sometimes, we expect so much out of Life. We want the most from Life. But... What if we give the most to Life? What if we invest and do work to earn the best Life? 🤔 What kind of Life do you envision for yourself? Can you picture beauty, security, serenity, fulfillment, joy, peace, etc? What else do you see? What do you want to see? What would happen if you heal your physical, emotional, financial, and/or mental wounds? Start by creating and having the best day of your Life. If a child doesn't need to win the lottery to have an amazing day, then maybe you can start from there. 🎠30 apr 2024👒 hey, happy tuesday and it’s the last day of april! as you may or may not know, i’m joining a pgr writing retreat this week! for those who are unfamiliar with pgr writing retreat, it is for phd students to focus on their own writings for the projects (thesis, papers, etc) with a set time in the same location! like writing clubs with phd friends📓 i signed up for it impulsively as someone dropped out! it was pretty great idea since everything was free (covered by doctoral school) i’ve joining writing retreats multiple times so far, but this is the first time of sleeping over! well, it’s been a productive day today - i FINALLY submitted the chapter and hopefully have more progress on my thesis🌝 have a lovely rest of the day! 🕯gratitude journal🕊 🎓 thanks for the organiser and the doctoral school for this event which is such a great opportunity for all of the phd students 🧳 the house where we’re staying is such a palace with beautiful spacious garden! 🫂 thankfully, everyone is so nice and work hard
