We are on to herbaceous plants for this week’s installment of Plant This, Not That! An herbaceous plant refers to a type of plant that has a soft, non-woody stem that typically dies back to the ground at the end of each growing season. Herbaceous plants include annuals, biennials, and perennials. Orange daylilies (Hemerocallis fulva) may captivate with their vibrant blooms and resilience, their unchecked growth poses a serious threat to Virginia's ecosystem, outcompeting native flora once they take hold. 🌱 Plant This! Say hello to the magnificent Turk's cap lily (Lilium superbum). These plants offer vivid red, orange, and yellow flowers from July through September. The Turk’s cap lily is also the largest lily in North America, with up to 40 flowers recorded on a single plant! #RiverHeroHomes #TurksCapLily #daylilly #nativeplants #invasivespecies

WOW!!!!!! The first Turks Cap Lily (Lilium Martagon) bloomed! I am so impressed by the color. It has yellow, purple, and orange so I don’t know what color to say it is! The petals are thick like a succulent! I had no clue they would be THIS GLORIOUS!!! I took the first picture in the morning right when it opened. I went back when it was in the shade for a better photo and it had changed some and you can see that in the last photo. These aren’t the best pictures, I was trying not to break the flower off twisting it to get a better view. These came from a mixed bag from Breck’s and this is their 3rd summer. This plant takes a long time to mature and when it does they can have up to 50 flowers on one plant!!! . . . . . #turkscap #turkscaplily #lily #lilies #brecksbulbs #tallflowers #li̇li̇um #liliummartagon #scentedflowers

Another plant I put in the ground at the wrong time and thought had died. Bought 5 of these as small tuber pieces a little late into spring last year (apparently, fall planting is best), and 3 sprang up and then, I thought, died. Nope, they were just grumpy, I guess? Hopefully, the deer won't trample them. #liliumsuperbum #turkscaplily #nativeplantsofpennsylvania

New from Florissa @florissagarden: Lilium ‘Claude Shride,’ a Martagon Lily. Tom loves Martagon lilies as they are vigorous and easy to grow. This one is stunning with its racemes elega y covered with plentiful dark red to mahogany blooms delicately spotted with bright orange spots facing downward. It has strongly recurved petals, looking like a Turk’s cap hence the common name. Blooms in early to mid summer, returns year after year and is an excellent border plant. Grows 4-6 feet tall and wide and performs best in full sun or part shade, in slightly alkaline well drained soils. Good moisture is required so avoid dry soils. It might take them a year to adjust to a new garden but once established, Martagons will thrive for years. #southlandsnurseryvancouver #southlandsnursery #thomashobbs #martagonlily #martagonlilies #turkscaplily #liliumclaudeshride #lilyclaudeshride #liliummartagonclaudeshride #summerflowers #summergarden #perennials #perennialgarden #florissa

#tbt Throwback Thursday 🔙 📍Mount Mitchell | Attakulla • 🗓️ August 2019 ⛰️💧🦋🏕️☁️🔥🎒 This was a great trip with 13 members participating. We met at the Carolina Hemlocks Campground ⛺️ and camped there the first night. That afternoon we drove to beautiful Crabtree Falls on the Blue Ridge Parkway for a very nice out and back of 3 miles to the falls. This is one of the highest waterfalls in NC at about 70 feet. Everyone pitched in with watermelon 🍉 and hot dogs 🌭 that night back at the campsite. The next morning, we drove to the parking area near the summit of Mount Mitchell, elevation 6684 feet, the highest mountain in the Eastern US. The weather was nice and cool at about 60°, a nice relief from the heat of August. Unfortunately, fog 😶‍🌫️ had set in on the mountain and the views were not as hoped. We first went to the summit and observation area and viewed the grave site of Dr. Elisha Mitchell, who died exploring the area. We then had a very nice out and back hike of about 3 miles along the Deep Gap Trail to Mount Craig, the 2nd highest peak in the Eastern US, and another nearby peak, Big Tom. We had our lunch in the picnic area near the peak of Mount Mitchell. We then got our packs and started the fairly short (about 2 miles) but rugged hike to our campsite that night at Commissary Hill, dropping in elevation to about 5600 feet. This was a very nice site with beautiful wildflowers, good camping sites, and nearby water. 🏞️ We enjoyed a campfire after one of our group had to call on all her Scouting skills to get it going! Turk's Cap Lily (Lilium martagon) from the Buda mountains. These astonishing plants are found in montane forests and grasslands in Hungary. This particular locality is at a popular hiking and picnic site among residents of Budapest, so it is threatened by human disturbance. TURK'S-CAP LILY 'Lilium superbum (detail) - You may have a hard time finding a Turk wearing a hat that looks like the Turk’s-cap Lily, but if you happen by a produce stand in the early autumn, look for Turk’s Cap squash - it bears a remarkeable resemblance to this late-spring wildflower. The common name is colorful, but the botanical name is more apt and easily understood: 'Lilium superbum'. It means a lily that’s “noble,” “excellent,” “proud,” or even “lofty.” All descriptions apply to this giant among native lilies - it can reach 10 feet in height and bear as many as 40 large, dangling flowers that may range from yellow through orange to red. Though somewhat different in design to the related Canada Lily, the Turk’s-cap attracts many of the same pollinators: Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, large butterflies, and moths - especially the hawk moths known as Hummingbird Moths. And like other large lilies, its starchy bulbs have been used in making soup. Turk’s-cap Lily seems most common in the Mid-Atlantic states, though it can be found out to and just beyond the middle Mississippi River region and into Florida. And as winters get warmer, it may spread into northern New England - if it can survive the deer, which love not the beauty but the flavor of this flower. Often confused with the common Tiger Lily, an imported garden escape, it is sometimes called the American Tiger Lily. --- Plant descriptions are excerpted from the book #UNDERSTORY by #JackieBaileyLabovitz, w/ text by Jack Sanders & foreword by James P. Blair. Dropping this beauty onto your feed because come on—how gorgeous is this lily species?! When sharing this photo initially, Lily, the photographer and Director of North Florida Programs for @floridanativeplantsociety, wrote this: "Historically, this lily has been "lumped" into Lilium superbum, the Turk's Cap Lily, despite morphological and habitat differences that define it from more northern populations of Lilium superbum. There is a lot of noticeable variation across populations of L. superbum. It may just be a species in the process of evolving into a more distinct species, though still too closely related to be able to differentiate easily." What an interesting point! As a side note, these lilies are native to North America's eastern and central regions. Have you seen them in person? 📷 Turk's-cap Lily (Lilium superbum) Global Status: Secure (G5) Photo By: @lilliumbyrd

Sweet Turk’s Cap painting. I hope this is still blooming there. We had already lived there fir several years before Dennis decided to paint it. This Turk’s cap came up every summer and we loved its sweetness. It also took my a while to find its name. It was a fascinating blossom, growing up so tall that while I sat on the railing of the wrap around porch I was nearly eye level with it. Happy summer my lovely. Today, I am sharing a pic of the martagon lily or Turk's cap lily (Latin: Lilium martagon, German: Türkenbund-Lilie), which is a Eurasian species of lily. It has a widespread native region extending from Portugal east through Europe and Asia as far east as Mongolia. Notice also the fly sitting on the right lily flower. Lilies — as tall as ourselves and more lovely, and full of fragrance, and long orange tongues, and those playthings the bees — stood in a neighbor’s yard, a thick, ramping hedge of them. You could not help but see that to be beautiful is also to be simple and brief; is to rise up and be glorious, and then vanish; is to be silent but as though a song was in you only it hasn’t yet been heard — Mary Oliver #lilies #turkscaplily #tobebeautiful #maryoliverpoetry #pink #augustblooms #augustflowers #summerflowers #flowers #flores #fleurs #blumen #fiori #rainbowpetals #worldbest_flower #flowerlovers_on_insta #petals_on_insta #raw_flowers #bestoftheusa_flowers #pennsylvaniaisbeautiful #phillyburbs #chescopa #brandywinevalley #chestercountypa #fever_flowers #fever_pink #amazingshots_color #mygardenthismonth
