Amy Thai ‘UNDERCURRENT’ 2023 marble sculpture composed of two elements 30x40x51 & 40x31x26 cm ‘Undercurrent’, defined as a current of water below the surface moving in a different direction from any surface current, refers to the dichotomy within Amy Thai’s work as a floral-artist and sculptor. ‘Undercurrent’ presents a group of medium-sized sculptures made of marble, which capture the organic forms as they can be observed in Venice, a city that is deeply engaged with the powerful force of nature. The heavy marble blocks that originate in the mountains of Carrara, have been brought to Venice and released into fleeting shapes, inspired by the lightness and sound of the surrounding water. In the final concert of its first season, the UNB Art Centre’s UNDERCURRENT showcases @thehellocrows a group of talented Wabanaki songwriters and storytellers, who collectively represent both their people and their generation. Their concert will be held on Thursday, April 25 at 7:30 p.m. “We’re thrilled that The Hello Crows can be part of our new UNDERCURRENT series,” says Marie Maltais, Director of the UNB Art Centre. “The Hello Crows celebrate the spirit of healing, humour and fortitude, by putting the modern Indigenous experience and landscape into story and song.” The Hello Crows educate their audiences about their culture, history, and the positive changes in their communities, while sharing some of the challenges they face today. The Hello Crows were formed in 2022, when songwriters and storytellers Judie Acquin, Dylan Ward, Mattie Comeau and Quinn Bonnell first appeared together at a Wabanaki songwriters’ circle. Sharing the stage, their chemistry became obvious; their combined voices amplified their powerful messages of lessons from the past, anthems for the present, and hope in the future. Undercurrent, a theme that seems to crop up often in my abstract work, is the topic of this piece also. It’s something that carries you safely away from danger, even though it seems like something you don’t want to yield to or rely on. I remember Tomihiro Hoshino, who broke his neck and was paralyzed from the neck down. He struggled to get back to the way he was and was getting nowhere. Then he got a picture of himself being carried away by a river. He was getting nowhere trying to get back to the original shore. Then he saw himself deciding to let the current carry him downstream, and he came to a safe shallow place. She has written ten books, including poetry, three novels for young adults, and her 2021 book, Born Between Crosses, is a sequence of prose-poetry celebrating the working lives of working-class women. She is known for writing on Socio economic issues and working-class representation in literature for several publications, podcasts and programmes; Natasha is the Founder and Artistic Director of The Working Class Writers Festival and The Nature Writing Prize for Working Class Writers. She guest edited the working-class edition of The Bookseller in 2022 and is recipient of The Bookseller Rising Star Award in the same year.
