Timberjack 1955 ★★★ Watched Jul 03, 2021 29th Sterling Hayden Film It's like Terror in a Texas Town, and Kansas Pacific, but honestly it's better than both of them. This was a film that was on TV but mi never checked the Freeview guide and missed it, feeling guilt the next few days, but also asking how it was on TV. Vera Ralston was a figure skater from Czechoslovakia who competed at the 1936 Winter Olympics, placing 17th. In the early 1940s, Ralston moved with her mother to the United States and became an actress. She mainly did films for Republic Pictures, but out of her 20 films, only 2 made a profit. She starred in films like, Storm Over London (1944), Dakota (1945), and The Fighting Kentuckian (1949). In 1952, Ralston married Republic studio head, Herbert Yates. Nearly 40years her senior, Yates used his position to get his wife starring roles even though she was not proving to be a draw at the box office. Two of Republic’s shareholders even sued Yates for using company assets to promote Ralston’s career. John Wayne, who co-starred with Ralston in Dakota, threatened to leave the studio if he had to work with her again after they worked together again in The Fighting Kentuckian. Interestingly, despite Herbert Yates essentially trying to compete with Darryl Zanuck using fellow skater Sonja Henie at 20th Century Fox, Ralston never abused the position she was in. Director Joseph Kane, who directed Ralston in more than a dozen films said, “Vera could have made it rough on everyone l, but she never took advantage of the situation. Although she never became a good actress, she was cooperative, hardworking and eager to please.” Personally, I agree with Kane, especially from what I read about her time in the Olympics. The 1936 Olympics was hosted by Nazi Germany. Adolph Hitler, the Chancellor of Germany and leader of the Nazi Party, asked if she would like to “skate for the swastika” after seeing her performance. Vera Ralston, recalling this interaction, said later, “I looked him right in the eye, and said that I’d rather skate on the swastika.” Hitler was said to be furious. I admire Ralston for that, especially since she lived to tell the story. The Lydeckers were a special effects team known for producing some of the best miniature effects of their time. Fair Wind to Java was restored by the University of California, Los Angeles Film and Television Archive after receiving funding from Martin Scorsese’s @thefilmfoundation_official Scorsese described the film as "The epitome of a Saturday afternoon matinee picture." When I lived in Los Angeles I would occasionally go to the 'Western Costume' sales that that they would have . WC is one of the oldest costume houses catering to Hollywood since the late 1900s I believe . This item I picked up is part of a Sarong Dress as worn by Vera Ralston in the 1953 film ' Fair wind to Java'. Somewhere I have a piece of cloth / paper that was pinned to it mentioning the film. After I got it home I did some research & the first thing that popped up online was an article by Martin Scorcese about his youth , mentions the films he loved as a child . One being ' Fair wind to Java . He remembers Fred Macmurray telling Vera Ralston " Go put on your silver sarong" ! I did find a burned copy of the film on ebay ( which I have sadly misplaced) & I think there is a brief scene showing the sarong in question. Anyway, it's just a little rag of Hollywood history . Vera Ralston, Czeck born champion ice skater in the 1936 Berlin Olympics, moved to Hollywood and shared the screen with the likes of Erich von Stroheim and John Wayne. She eventually ended up at Hope Ranch, Santa Barbara - suffered a nervous breakdown, and died after a long battle with cancer. Her ocean front home was an ode to classic ‘Hollywood Regency’ style - all the furniture was custom made, and upholstered white. The floors throughout the house were black and white linoleum, and the bar was a ‘tuck and roll’ leather-clad jewelry box. Her 9’3” sofa, (amongst other goodies!), just arrived @spacehomeandgarden. Vera Helena Hrubá, show here in front of the Florence Hotel for the premier of Timberjack, was born in Prague, sometime between 1919 and 1921 (she was notoriously cagey about her true age). Although she is best known in the United States as an actress, she began her career as a public figure as a figure skater, representing Czechoslovakia. She competed for two years, in 1936 and '37, attending two European Championships and one Olympic Games. Reportedly, during the 1936 Olympics, she met Adolph Hitler, who asked her to "skate for the swastika". As she told the story, her response to this was "I'd rather skate on the swastika." She later fled Prague with her family when Nazi troops took over the city.
