DAY 70 - 90% - LAST QSNAP MOVE! Anyone else unable to put your stitching away when you're near a significant target? As soon as i hit 89% yesterday i knew i wasn't going to bed until i hit 90%. Today marks 26 years since the release of Airbag / How Am I Driving? - Radiohead's fifth EP!! It was released in 1998, specifically to the North American market - hence the title typography stating 'this mini album is aimed at the USA'. It includes most of the songs that had been issued as B-sides on Radiohead's CD singles from OK Computer in the preceding year. Some facts about the tracks!!! The contents of Airbag / How Am I Driving? differ slightly from the EP "No Surprises / Running From Demons = ノーサプライゼス〜ランニング・フロム・ディーモンズ " (10 Dec 1997) released in Japan. The song "Airbag", OK Computer's opening track, was never officially released as a single. The version on this EP ends cold rather than transitioning to the song "Paranoid Android" as it does on the album "Meeting in the Aisle" was Radiohead's first instrumental, featuring programming by Zero 7's Henry Binns and Sam Hardaker. In 2003 Radiohead donated this song (for free) to budding film-makers as a soundtrack to be included in the directors' short films as part of an MTV initiative about mental health. The sample that opens "A Reminder" is a recording from Prague Metro's automated announcement system: "Finish getting on and getting off; the doors are closing. The next station will be Jiřího z Poděbrad." An early version of "Palo Alto" was entitled "OK Computer" - this of course became the name of the studio album, and the track was named after a city in California The EP stylistically bridges the gap between the progressive-alternative OK Computer and Radiohead's experimental future sound! Interestingly, the EP's cover shows the number 1426148550 - this was a WORKING telephone number (UK) and the voice on the other end, which simply said, "Hello?" was that of Thom Yorke! Fans could even leave a message, and some of the content was used in later productions. Sadly the number has been disconnected for years and calling it, as of 2009, yields BT's standard "The number you have dialed has not been recognised". Day 53 and it's finally time to work across the bottom. This last chunk was not fun. The white tree...... Well i say white. White makes you think it's one colour. Ohhh nooooo, that would be far too easy. Apparently i wanted to use ALLLLLLLLLLL the 'whites' in DMC's colour palette when i charted this. I digress. The white tree section was almost pure confetti. The Smile • A Light For Attracting Attention • 2022 ⬇️ The best Radiohead album since “In Rainbows” - that is what I have been keep telling myself since I first heard The Smile (and I’m sure I’m not the only one here). To this day, this has not changed. I’m still wondering why they did not use Radiohead to deliver these great songs...They even brought long time collaborators Nigel Godrich (as producer) and Stanley Donwood (as illustrator) in. But then again, it feels a bit different, once you really get into this album. Maybe its the drummer Tom Skinner’s involvement adding new ‘flavours’ making it a well made piece of art combining art rock,math rock,electro-rock and jazz. While it took a few listens at first, because I was a bit reluctant towards this new project, it is an album that I have been coming back very often these past 2 years. We even have a bit of a ‘rockers’ like “We Don’t Know What Tomorrow Brings” or “You Will Never Work In Television Again”. But the one song that captured my total attention was “Free In the Knowledge”. Simply wonderful song. This year, they already released their 2nd album “Wall of Eyes”, but here I still need a few more listens...for now, it doesn’t top this debut album.
