This week I’ve been thinking a lot about why. 🤷♂️ Why do we do what we do? Why I am doing this Year Of Living Wildishly? Why do I do anything that I do? These are also questions I get asked a lot. They are BIG questions, and I don’t really have the answers, but I do have some ideas. 💡 So I could be wrong, but I think the most obvious motivation for people to start businesses, put things on social media, write newsletters or do any of the stuff I do, is because they want to make money. 💴 And I get that. I, like quite a lot of founders, grew up in a situation where we didn’t really have any money, and I can totally see how people growing up in that situation can think that money can make life better. It’s how I felt for a long time. Food. It’s a broad theme. 🍏 It’s also one of the things we base a lot of our Wildish Club activities around. We mostly do that because we really love food, and it just somehow always tastes better when you eat it outside and in the company of wonderful people. 🫂 We think food is an amazing way for people and cultures to come together, as for the most part, it’s a love that we all share. It’s also something that goes hand in hand with getting outdoors. For starters, most food is created outdoors and for the majority of human history, it’s been consumed outdoors too. 🍳 There is a problem though. As a society we are becoming increasingly disconnected from real food. Almost 10% of the UK is now classed as a “Food Desert”, which is an area that has little to no access to fresh whole foods. So for our Wildish month of food, we’re going to be sharing as much as we (and others who know a lot more than us) can about foraging, growing, cooking and eating. Finding good enamelware isn’t simple. In fact we’ve been looking for some nice enamel mugs for the past 5 years. ☕️ They are strong, light, look great and, in a pinch, you can cook with them on an open fire. 🔥 I still have some enamelware that my Nana must have bought in the ‘60s. So it definitely lasts a long time. The enamelware my Nana bought was made in the UK, almost all the enamelware you can buy now is made in China and none of it is made in the UK. So we’ve been on a mission to try and find some made as close to home as possible, and after years of searching, we found a small company that makes them in Poland. Everything is handmade using techniques they’ve developed over the past 100 years, and fortunately, they were willing to make some just for us. ☺️ Opening the box and seeing Wildish in orange on the bottom of everything was a pretty awesome moment. As well as being made closer to home, this enamelware is also the best we’ve ever used. Our Story Part 3 Before finding someone to make our bags, we had to be clear on our direction as a business, and we needed a name. We knew that minimalist design principles were at the core of the brand and that we wanted to make a bag that would just take the bare essentials. We came up with a few shockers like “Simplifly” before one of us mentioned Bear Minimum, we knew it was right straight away. This then became Bear Minimal and has ultimately become BearMade. As for our direction, well we knew that we didn’t want to add more crap to the world, and that we wanted to use our funds to help people connect with nature. We also knew that we wanted to: → Make simple and functional bags with a timeless design that would last a lifetime → Make them in the UK whilst competing on price with products produced halfway around the world → Have the smallest environmental impact possible → Use our funds to get people outdoors and connecting with nature → Talk openly about mental wellbeing and how getting outdoors can impact it. Achieving all this without much money behind us, and no experience of the industry was not going to be easy (naivety is a very useful tool). It became even harder when we couldn’t find anyone in the UK willing to make a small number of bags for us. After weeks of searching and calling lots of different places with little success, we found Amy. She was, and still is, amazing. Without her, it would have been impossible to move forward with BearMade. 🚨 Wildish Club Recap 🚨 Another week of adventures were had at our wildish clubs, with some wonderful wildish folk travelling across the country to make it 🙏🏼 Starting off back at base in Pateley Bridge, we went on a photography walk around Grimwith Reservoir, taking in the glorious views and dabbling in a bit of photography. We had two lovely people drive all the way from London for the day! 🚗 Down to Rob in London, the group explored the night sky with an astronomer from the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, stopping for a cheeky pint afterwards. ✨ Our tour around the UK brings us to Tor in Cardigan, where the team had a brilliant morning in the wildlife park, playfully sketching with Rosy from @waldenartswales. ✍️ And finally, over to Bex in Hampshire, where she had someone travel all the way from London! They passed some of the original locks built back in 1653! Our Story Part 2 ✌🏼 So we had the concept, now we needed to make it a reality….. There was one issue. Neither of us knew how to make a bag. I had never even used a sewing machine. So the prototype production was down to Nell. She had access to her grannies sewing machine, and sort of knew how to use it. We came up with the initial design concept together and I left her to it. 🧵 On the first prototype, Nell accidentally measured in inches rather than cm…. The bag was huge. So for the second one, I thought I would try and help out. It quickly became obvious that Nell did not have the patience for this kind of work (potentially I might have been a bit of a perfectionist), so I asked her to show me how to use the sewing machine, and I took over. I made loads of prototypes before eventually settling on the design we still make today. However, there was no way we could sell what I was making. They were not pretty. They say every time a woman gives birth to a baby, she rebirths herself, too. If this is true, I was reborn again on August 31, 2023. As an acknowledgment to this rebirth, I thought I’d reintroduce myself here. I am 40. I met my husband when I was 15 & he was 16, we married when I was 19, & had our oldest kid when I was 21. I miscarried 4 babies within the first 4 years of our marriage. I have 6 kids, ages 18, 15, 12, 10, 4 & 5 months. I dreamed of our 6 since I was 16. They are all finally here. 💕 I’ve had 3 homebirths, & 1 @painfreebirth Those tests tell me I am a 4w5, a Melancholy, a Leo, an INFP & HSP, a 2/5 Manifesting Generator, that I deal with OCD & that I am a 12/108 on the Religious Fundamentalism scale. 12 is the lowest you can score. 🙃 I am too heretical for religion, too spiritual for marxism. I am Potawatomi & I am American. I have been decolonizing myself for 10+ years, though I didn’t learn that term until 2020. @kaitlincurtice I was an ultramarathoner. Now I’m barely a 5ker. 😅 My husband & I spent 9 summers roadtripping with our kids to all 48 contiguous states. & last summer, to celebrate our 20th anniversary, 40th birthdays, baby moon, + our oldest’s 18th birthday & her high school graduation, we flew, with our oldest beside us & our youngest in my belly, across the pond to explore Italy, Greece & Turkey. 3 years ago, after 16 years of believing we would never see it again, we won back the beloved Vetter family homestead at an auction. We are raising our children there now. I homeschooled our kids for 12 years. Now they are approaching the end of their 2nd year in “real school”. I realized I wanted to be a writer when I was 32.
