/fənɛɾɪks fɹaɪdeɪ/ My love of consonant clusters knows no BOUNDs (morphemes)... 🤓 . So few assessments examine clusters!! Macrae (2017) examined 12 different speech production (aka "artic") tests and found that the majority, including the Goldman Fristoe, had zero words with bound morphemes that resulted in a consonant cluster. The Linguisystems Articulation Test (LAT) had 10 words with bound morphemes. But, across all tests, the only bound morpheme that was included was plural 's'. So, we all know the signs of stroke and what to do, right? Are you certain that those you love would know them too? And actually call for help? I encourage all of you to make SURE, without a doubt that your family and friends know. It just might save their life. When I was working at the hospital in Tulsa, I got the call that no daughter wants to get, “Sarah, we think your dad is having a stroke.” I’d been afraid of getting a call like that for the majority of my life. To say that I’m terrified to answer my phone is an understatement. There have been so many of my family members in the hospital over the last 18 months, and not all of them have made it out alive. Because he acted as soon as he noticed symptoms, my dad ended up making a full recovery. His arm, face, and leg were numb and he wasn’t able to move his arm. He also had slurred speech but managed to call my sister who called 911 for him when she realized what he was trying to say. He was life-flighted to the hospital where I work (thank you, Lord!) since he lives in a very rural area. He made it with about 45 minutes left to get tPA (the “clot buster” drug.) I am SO THANKFUL that we had talked about these signs and how vital it is to not wait, but act immediately. And that he actually did! (Anybody else have a stubborn parent?) My pops was discharged a few days later and got to go back to living his normal life. I’m so thankful that I was given 2 more years with him after that. Time is truly our most precious and scarce resource. You'll always wish for more of it. Share with your family. Share with your friends. Share with everyone. “I just want to help people.” Have you ever caught yourself saying that? Especially when you're faced with limitations on how you can help your clients? Freedom is the ability to make choices on behalf of yourself and/or your clients. Even though SLPs and OTs have master’s degrees (or higher) and are usually incredibly dedicated employees, we often lack autonomy to make decisions that serve us and our clients. In most clinical settings, there are limitations on our freedom. It is not uncommon for clinicians to face limitations on how to serve our clients from administrators. All we want is the ability to help our clients to the best of our ability. We have hearts of gold and extensive evidence-based clinical knowledge of diagnostic and treatment approaches that we can use to serve our clients. When we’re not allowed to serve people according to our expertise, our clinical freedom is limited. SLPs and OTs also face limitations of personal freedom, such as how and when they can use time off, whether or not they can use sick time to care for ill loved ones and even whether or not they have time in their schedule for a lunch break. Clinicians just want to be trusted to make autonomous decisions. One of the most popular sentiments I hear from clinicians who are leaving jobs to pursue private practice is, “I want to be my own boss.” What they’re saying is, “I want the ability to make my own clinical and personal decisions.” I recently asked a group of private practitioners to list the things they can do now that they have a private practice and are their own boss.
